Nowadays, a lot of people are thinking college isn’t worth the time, effort, and money. It has its downsides; college isn’t for everyone, there are those that fail to graduate even within six years of schooling, it’s expensive and it’s not always of good quality. What they don’t realize is that college has more benefits than disadvantages. College is worth it because it is a steppingstone to the future. It can help uncertain students discover what they would like to do for their careers. Workers that have graduated from college have higher wages than those with only high school diplomas, students get to meet new people and experience new things as they go to college.
According to Andrew Rotherham, the majority of college graduates—86% of the graduates—agree that college is a good investment. College helps most students finalize their decision (or discover new opportunities) about their careers they will be having for the rest of their lives (collegeview.com). Higher education gives you advantage over people with only high school diplomas. College graduates also earn more than high school graduates. Additionally, college students get to experience new things they wouldn’t have been able to experience and make friends that will last a lifetime and connections that will further broaden their horizons.
Albeit, college is a very good experience, it isn’t for everybody. A lot of students attending four-year colleges full-time fail to graduate even within six months. (Richard Vedder.) Not everyone has what it takes to survive college, whether it’s lack of determination or discipline, or smarts. It depends on the person. Students that graduated high school in the top quarter with good grades in their classes should attend a four-year program while those in the bottom quarter should look for alternatives. (Vedder.) After all, if you don’t have good grades and you don’t actually pay attention in class, you won’t survive college and it would be a waste of money if you still choose to go. Looking for alternatives like attending community college, starting a business, or just taking a job would be a smarter choice. According to an article by Jody Zambrano on Classroom.synonym.com, higher education also comes at a big price not everyone can afford. Most people don’t have enough money to pay for college. Of course, student loans are available but that can leave you in debt for a long time. Moreover, according to Rotherham, “there are plenty of rewarding and important jobs and careers that do not require college.” Mark Zuckerberg—creator of Facebook—and Bill Gates—from Microsoft—are prime examples of successful people who failed to graduate college but became successful nonetheless. But not a lot of people have their skills and knowledge. What will happen to those who were not able to finish college and aren’t about to start a company that will soon become a big thing?
College may be expensive and it may not be for everyone but it’s a very good experience.
