Transgender Discrimination in America Living in America, discrimination is something that has always been present in the American culture. Discrimination can come in many forms, and effects many associated with it. Although many communities have been discriminated against, the LGBT community is one who has experienced some of the harshest hatred in America. Amongst the LGBT community, members who are transgendered often get the most back lash for expressing their sexuality. Discrimination is something the transgendered community knows all too well. Many people seem to have problems with the fact that most members of the Transgender community perform either the sexual reassignment surgery to turn them into the opposite gender, or they get …show more content…
Black transgender Americans experience stank social, economic, and health disparities compared to others in the LGBT community (Moodie-Mills). According to research, black transgender youth are more likely to end up homeless and living on the street (Moodie-Mills). Reports show that about 400,000 gay and transgendered youth experience homelessness with about forty-four percent of them being black transgender (Moodie-Mills). Homelessness for black Trans is often caused from high rates of rejection, violence, and discrimination within their families, churches, and the black community (Moodie-Mills). Many black Trans come out at earlier ages, often while they are teens (Moodie-Mills). Coming out at earlier ages makes it harder for black Trans because they are still dependent on their families in most cases (Moodie-Mills). Rejection makes the level of vulnerability to go up which is the case for many black Trans (Moodie-Mills). Black transgendered often fall through the cracks when lumped under the gay or black umbrella (Moodie-Mills). In most ethnic communities more so in the African American community, the LGBT community is still seen as a taboo subject, and is less accepted
The great feminist theorist once said “‘Sometimes people try to destroy you, precisely because they don’t see it, but because they see it and don’t want it to exist’” (Mook 195). Support becomes very important for transgender people at the time they transition. Many families support their transgender family members, but society rejects their transition. Many people want transgender people out of their communities.
Transgendered people in America have made many great strides since the 1990s. They have encountered violence, lack of health care, and the loss of homes, jobs, family and friends. There have been many phases of the struggle of being transgendered in America over the years. The current phase we must be in now is equal rights. There are many variations of discrimination against the transgendered community. In our society we simply do not like what we do not understand. It is easier to discriminate than to try and understand. We are all created different and we should appreciate our differences. The change must come by addressing the views of the public. There is much justification in the unequal rights of transgendered peoples. The Human Rights Campaign has been started to achieve equal rights for all Americans including the LGBQ community. A serious injustice is in the world of sports. Professional sports are one of societies major traditions totally based on rules and regulations that are meant to preserve the integrality of the games, but may not be inclusive to all its players.
Transgender is an umbrella term, meaning an individual’s gender-identity does not align with their assigned sex at birth. Although transgender is a protected class in eighteen states, these individuals still face discrimination within the country and around the world (“Non-Discrimination Laws”). Transgender is not a lifestyle, no one chooses to live their life constantly being discriminated against. Transgender issues should be more educated on and their lives should be more protected.
Early April 2016, North Carolina passed a law restricting governments from passing laws that are discriminatory. This law is intended to protect Transgender people from discrimination. Discrimination against Transgenders is against the law, and it has stirred up arguments throughout the nation. With more and more people standing up against discrimination regarding Transgenders, the debate about Transgenders is now nationwide. Unfortunately, Transgenders still continue to face public discrimination due to misinformation and misleading statements from the media.
Other people treat trans people so poorly that it makes trans people rethink their lives. They wonder if it is even worth it, if they should just go back to being miserable, hate themselves and their lives, just because the way they were discriminated by their society. I also found that people in our society consider transgenderism a physical or mental disability. This is such a controversial topic on so many levels. Trans people strongly disagree with that statement. I found that some people with disabilities disagree with that statement as
Such as finding acceptance by yourself and others, and having gender dysphoria, the confusion and anxiety that comes when your gender feels undecided. Gender dysphoria can become particularly severe during puberty. To make the dysphoria even worse, there can be significant stress given by society for people to follow gender roles and binaries, which can make “labeling” your gender even more difficult. All of these stereotypes are often used by many people, making it hard to find someone to accept you for who you are, which could result in depression. For non-cisgender people of races other than white, it can be even more difficult to find people willing to accept your identity. The rate of transgender suicide attempts is about 9 times the amount of the rest of Americans. About 40% of trans people have tried to kill

Today Americans should not have to tolerate what we did not have to tolerate some 50 years ago such as transgenders, legalization of marijuana, the attempt of banning personal handguns, and many more unreasonable circumstances because we used to be one of the best countries and don't get me wrong we still are, but we aren't what we used to be. Sure have we done some amazing things, but we have left the door open for so many horrific things to come and take over the nation. Some things that go on as of 2016 in the nation of red, white, and blue just blow my mind. Ten years ago not many people even knew what a transgender was, let alone had to deal with them all the time. Not many people thought weed, a class one narcotic would be legalized either but the country is full of surprises I guess, and also while giving obscured freedoms to those who don't need it they give the rest of us the disadvantage of not being able to carry a weapon, or at least that's what they are attempting.
Transgender Today Nowadays, there are lot of unexpected changes coming in our lives every day which are challenging to our society. Gender issues are one of the hot topics among new changes. Transsexuality is a critical part of this gender issue. After reading the article “Night to his day” by Judith Lorber, I found a clarification regarding the social construction of gender. While looking for some facts about transgender, I have also found a lot of articles with different points of views from researchers, scientists and individuals who have transformed from their origin to transgender men/women.
Currently the citizens living in the United States are imprisoned within the binary of two genders. It is only acceptable for a person to identify as a male or a female. Depending on the gender the person identifies, as there is an expectation of how that person should look and act. The person identifying as the specific gender, must maintain the gender norms that are in place. These gender binaries are so prevalent in our lives; it is to the point where a large group of Americans are being overlooked. This group of Americans identifies as transgender, which means they do not fit society’s expectations of how a specific gender should look and behave. (gaycenter.org, 2012). The trans population does not fit the expected gender molds that are
Government agencies such as the Affordable Care Act law defines no sexual discrimination including gender identity, transgender status prohibits majority of insurance companies and healthcare providers from refusing to cover transition-related treatments or using incorrect pronouns under the law. However, the greatest effect can only occur when we — as an American society — change our paradigm. What we can do to help to contribute the changes of degrading experience for many LGBT people in healthcare setting are educating ourselves and creating more awareness in general public to ensure that everyone needs to be treated equally whoever they are. We should be more open-minded to create a welcoming and acceptable workplace environment inclusive of all trans people, to prevent transgender from getting reluctance to reveal their sexual orientation or gender identity to their health providers by training on the full scope of this minority group health in medical schools, and to keep fighting for the state-laws to ensure equality in for transgender individuals in the public utilities and services since only almost half of U.S. states discriminating against transgenders is considered
Unfortunately, people that identify as transgender do not have the same rights as I do. A transgender person by definition is: “someone whose gender identity-that is, an individual’s internal sense of being male or female-does not align with his or her assigned sex” (Barry). Transgender people can get refused to seen by a doctor, just because they are transgender. A study of how transgender have been discriminated by medical providers was done and the study showed: “Nineteen percent had been refused treatment by a doctor or other provider because of their transgender or gender non-conforming status” (). Broken down by race, the ethnic group that was refused the most was: American Indian (36%), Multi-Racial (27%), Hispanic (22%), Black (19%), White (17%), Asian (15%) and then 19% (Total Sample). Not only can they be refused medical treatment, but doctors and medical professionals can be verbally abusive as well! “Over one quarter of respondents (28%) reported verbal harassment in a doctor’s office, emergency room or other medical setting and 2% of the respondents reported
Another concept that is present in regard to hate crimes committed against transgender individual is privilege. Privilege fits into this topic because individuals who are transgender goes against what society believes is true, which is that a person is either a man or a woman. Transgender individuals do not have the same privilege that straight individuals have, and there are some people who do no have any privileges present in their life. Straight individuals are not looked at funny when people realize that a transgender individual was born a man but identifies as a woman, and the only way they can stay true to themselves is dressing like a woman. Transgender individuals do not have privileges that other people have, such as medical insurance
Discrimination is defined as the detrimental behaviors directed to individuals or a group of people based on a particular category that they fall under. Prejudice has to do with the irrational attitudes and opinions that a person or group of people has about another. Discrimination and prejudice are and always have been two of the largest problems in our global society Religious and LGBT discrimination and prejudice are two particular forms that I would like to focus on.
dThe treatment of the LGBT community in American society is a true social injustice. LGBT, or the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender, community has gone through many hardships whether it’s been being harassed, denied
