Clara’s Gender Identity Draft "A lot of people see gender as very one-sided, girl or boy, but in reality, even the choices of one, the other, both, or neither just don't feel right.” Many people don’t realize that there are more gender identities than just “male” and “female.” In June 2016, The Williams Institute at UCLA estimated that about 1.4 million US adult’s genders don't align with the one they were assigned at birth. One can identify as the opposite gender from their assigned sex, as no gender, as both, or as a unique identity not so easily categorized.
It is a common misconception that gender, sex, and sexuality are linked. In reality, sex refers to biology, whether a person was born with male or female chromosomes and genitalia,

Cisgender, for example, is the word that describes when your gender identity aligns with your sex. It is the reverse of transgender. Most people identify as cisgender or 'cis' without even recognizing it, but it is a gender identity, too.
If you identify as transgender it means you feel like you are a different gender than which you were assigned at birth. Though transgender typically refers to transitioning to the opposite gender, it is an umbrella term for any other genders such as

Such as finding acceptance by yourself and others, and having gender dysphoria, the confusion and anxiety that comes when your gender feels undecided. Gender dysphoria can become particularly severe during puberty. To make the dysphoria even worse, there can be significant stress given by society for people to follow gender roles and binaries, which can make “labeling” your gender even more difficult. All of these stereotypes are often used by many people, making it hard to find someone to accept you for who you are, which could result in depression. For non-cisgender people of races other than white, it can be even more difficult to find people willing to accept your identity. The rate of transgender suicide attempts is about 9 times the amount of the rest of Americans. About 40% of trans people have tried to kill
What does it mean to be classified as “transgender?” When an individual feels his or her biological gender does not match his or her gender identity, he or she may be considered transgender. This feeling of confusion may lead to frustration as well as more complicated issues related to mental health like depression. Some individuals may make the decision to medically change their biological gender to match their gender identity. One such individual, Caitlyn Jenner, made this transition and prompted additional discussion and promoted acceptance of transgender individuals.
For instance, sociologists would argue that characteristics of the male gender in a given society include independence, and dominance whereas females express more passive behavior. Gender identity, on the other hand is an individual’s sense of their gender or in other words, their sense as to whether they are feminine or masculine. Therefore, transgender is a term related to “people whose gender identity is different from the gender commonly socially assigned to them on the basis of their biological sex” (Morrow & Messinger, 2006, p. 7).“Biological theories assume that gender should be consistent with biological sex and there are only two genders and two sexes” which does not correspond to transgender people. Furthermore, transgender is also used as a general term to include people such as transsexuals and cross-dressers
Imagine going through life believing that you were born into the wrong body. This is how a transgender feels as they go through life. A transgender is a person who whose self-identity does not conform unambiguously to male or female sex. This topic is very controversial due to many arguments about the differences between the male and female physique. The natural biological differences between males and a females play a huge role in this controversy.
Tranny. He-she. Shemale. It. Hermaphrodite. Freak. Transgender people often face discrimination in many ways, whether it be by the use of these slurs or by some form of assault or harassment. Many people, no matter their ages, become disowned by their families or rejected by society for coming out as transgender. Too many times, parents of transgender people force their children to live somewhere other than their homes, such as with other family members or with friends. While they likely are better off without discriminative family around, the sense of being disowned or potentially unloved is often too much for some to handle. Transphobia creates an unsafe world for the transgender community, and, because of its toxic nature, society as a whole needs to strive to lessen and eventually erase transphobia altogether.
Seventy-three transgender children who were allowed to express their gender identity freely, forty-nine of their siblings and seventy-three non-transgender children were involved in the study. None of the transgender children had taken hormone, but they lived freely to express their gender identity. The study measured anxiety and depression levels. For depression levels all the numbers were almost all the same. Anxiety levels for all the children varied. Transgender children had higher levels of depression and anxiety than the siblings or non-transgender children, but the variables were only one or two numbers more. These transgender children were relatively happy with their lives as they were able to live with the gender identity they wanted. Letting transgender live the identity they feel comfortable can improve their mental health in the long run. (“Transgender

“When trannies were growing up and coming of age-there was no place for us. We were kinda put on the fringes of society...the real safe space for us was out there on the streets” (Trans Views). OR “Gender is a universe and we are all stars” (Lacey Roop). Transgenderism can be best described as moving away from the gender assigned at birth. This can mean wearing the clothes, taking on the roles, and assuming the pronouns of a gender designated at birth, or rejecting gender entirely . Gender variance and transgenderism, although seen commonly throughout human history, are seen as unnatural and an insult to the sex that God “gave”. Many believe that sex and gender is the same thing, and therefore assume that one that is biologically female is a woman, and one that is biologically male is a man. There is a common misunderstanding that transgenderism is an expression of homosexuality, assuming that the trans person is straight. Sometimes, transgender is seen as a gender of its own, excluding transmen and transwomen from their own gender.
In today's world there are many different sexual identities a person can adhere to, instead of just being heterosexual or homosexual. What a sexual identity is, is how one refers to think of oneself in terms of whom one is romantically or sexually attracted to. A type of sexual identity is when a person both male or female feel like they are inside the wrong body and they wish to have a sex change. Individuals who identify themselves as transgender aren’t usually adults, in some cases it is children who go through the stages of feeling out of place with there bodies and wish to change it. Some people in today's society would find it very odd that children would wish to be in a different body, in order to understand why this is happening you would have to know what exactly is transgender and transsexual, what causes transgenderism, and the early signs of transgenderism. This phenomenon has been around for a very long time and due to the fact that there is a large misunderstanding there is much confusion when faced with it. In order for one to understand how children become transgender or transsexual one must know what transgender and transsexual mean, what causes transgenderism, and the early signs of it and be mentally prepared for what is to come. Most of the responsibility in understanding transgender children falls on the parents of transgender children.
No one wants to feel like they do not belong or like they are not cared for. Transgender people are just like everyone else and deserve to be treated equally to cisgendered people. According to Sam Killerman, being transgendered means living "as a member of a gender other than that expected based on sex assigned at birth." This definition is extremely important because a transgender person is still a person.
However, they want to be referred to only as a man or woman. But what if our gender identity, our sense of being a boy or being a girl, does not match our physical body? From a very early age, we will start to feel increasingly uncomfortable. For some this is a mild discomfort, for others it is so traumatic they would rather die than continue to live in the wrong body. Unfortunately, as transsexual people are a small minority of the population, the condition has been labeled by Psychiatrists as "Gender Identity Disorder".
(1) self-identifies as transgender (or something analogous); (2) presents as a female, transgender, or feminine
40% of all transgender people will attempt suicide at least once in their lifetime. (Appendix A) (Center for Disease Control, 2016) Unlike previously stated identifiers, transgender people do not share the same inherent mental stability, transgender people are medically diagnosed with a mental disorder called gender dysphoria. (Okoye, 2018) Depressive disorders are currently a precluding factor for enlistment into the military. Gender dysphoria falls into this category. (Department of Defense, 2012) Allowing transgender to serve in the U.S. military requires the DOD to readjust the policy for entrance in the armed services with preexisting mental health conditions.
“Transgender” is an umbrella term that includes gender non-conforming people, transsexuals (female-to-male and male-to-female), drag queens and kings, cross dressers, bi-gender people, and genderqueers/genderfluid people. All of those terms deal with gender identity and not conforming to society's gender norms. Of course, some transgender people believe they were always the gender they chose/choose to be, so the use of female-to-male and male-to-female can be seen as transphobic to such people. The pronouns that transgender people use may vary. One transgender woman may prefer to be called a she, instead of pronouns relating to their birth-assigned gender- a he. The same goes with transgender men, and bi-gender people have the choice to be called by both gender-norm pronouns or one or the other. The pronouns that transgender people use is at their own discresion (Beemyn 1-2). Transgender people, in general, DO NOT appreciate being called trannies gender benders, she-males, 'it's, or anything besides the pronouns they have confirmed as the ones they prefer. Neglecting the needs of regular people is bad eno...
That reaction will result in hate crimes and violence, sadly. Transgender individuals are also referred to as confused. Being transgender is not an act of confusion or a choice to get attention, but a consistent, real, gender identity. A study, which is published in Psychological Science, contains prepubescent transgender children, and were aged matched with their cisgender siblings and another group of cisgender children. The experiment used the Implicit Association Test to determine the trans and cisgender children’s gender identities.
