Transformative Effects of Suffering In the Charles Dickens novel “ A Tale of two cities” , a major theme of suffering arises. It is evident in the characters that suffering brings changes to our inner being state. As we notice that, the characters like Madame Defarge, Dr. Manette and Sydney carton, all goes through the state of suffering. Madame Defarge, who now has a mindset of ruthlessness and revengeful attitude due to her pain and suffering she has gone through. We also note that Dr. manette was earlier weak in soul, but now he has gained strength due to his old pain and suffering. Sydney carton also had lost hope in life but now he has found a new hope for life due to his earlier suffering of hopelessness. likewise , we also notice Lucie also to be …show more content…

Sydney Carton was the assistant lawyer for Mr. Stryver. He was very Hardworking and devoted to his work. Mr Stryver made Sydney to do all his work. Sydney did not achieve anything in life. He always blamed his life and was sad of his life. He had suffered the pain of not achieving anything in life. His suffering was so huge that it made him to change completely and gave him a new goal in life. As he says, “ … The man of good capabilities and good emotions, incapable of their directed exercise, incapable of his own help and his own happiness, sensible of the ……………….resigning himself to let it eat him away”( Book 2, chapter 5, p.g 69). It is evident that he was suffering from the incapability of doing for his own happiness and he was fed up of his life and wanted to die. As he also conveys, “ Don’t shrink from anything I say. I am like one who died young.”( Book 2, Chapter 13, p.g 115). Therefore, it conveys that he thinks he is already dead in his soul , that is his experiencing
