According to Aristotle’s definition, a dramatic production needs to adhere to certain criteria to be considered a tragedy. The film “Gladiator”, directed by Ridley Scott, may be considered a tragic film in respect to Aristotle’s definition. “Gladiator” is set in the realistic time period of 180 AD, in ancient Rome. At this time, Rome was under the power of Emperor Marcus Aurelius Caesar. After his death, his son Commodus imprisons Maximus, who was general of his father’s army, since he fears he may overthrow him and take over his power as his father Marcus had hoped. run on Maximus is then enrolled into the gladiator games where he must fight to stay alive. This plot interprets a realistic situation which could have happened in the past, which
follows Aristotle’s first rule of tragedy. The story of Maximus is shown throughout “Gladiator” with dialogue, and different scenes involving actions of war and violence. Examples of this include the opening battle scene between the Roman and German armies, and the gladiator games. In Aristotle’s definition of tragedy, he states that the story must be told with actions, and not simply narrated; “Gladiator” expresses this rule throughout the film. Throughout the film, the viewer experiences different emotions. When Maximus discovers his wife and son had been murdered, the viewers feel for Maximus, and share in his sadness. Fear is felt as Maximus participates in the gladiator games against his opponents, and eventually against Commodus. The viewer begins to anticipate the death of Maximus which allows fear to be felt throughout these scenes. Happiness and sadness are experienced when Maximus finally defeats Commodus, which brings forth the end of their battle. Unfortunately, Maximus also dies when the battle is finished, and is then reunited in the afterlife with his son and wife. In Aristotle’s interpretation of a tragedy, the expression of emotions needs to occur throughout the production. For these reasons, “Gladiator” may be considered a tragic production when compared to Aristotle’s definition of a tragedy.

The movie takes place during the reign of the Holy Roman Empire in the year 180 A.D. The Emperor, Marcus Aurelius, is dying and wishes to leave the Roman Empire under the control of Roman General Maximus Meridius. The Emperor’s son Commodus betrays Maximus, kills his father, and takes control of Rome. In betraying Maximus, Commodus has his family killed. Maximus knowing this returns to Rome as a gladiator under the alias “Spaniard” in search of revenge(Imdb). According to Aristotle, “Tragedy is an imitation of an action that is serious, complete, and of a certain magnitude”(Kwheeler). In order for someone to be considered a tragic hero, the person must meet the criteria of high social status, suffer from a hamartia, face a catastrophe, invoke catharsis, and experience anagnorisis and peripeteia(Kwheeler).
Gladiator (2000) is an action drama about a Roman general that is betrayed by his country and is forced to fight in the Colosseum. This particular scene, which runs for approximately 5 minutes, is the aftermath of the fight scene between Maximus, the betrayed general, and Commodus, the jealous emperor who betrayed him. This scene is not only significant because it is the concluding scene of the film, but also because it represents the end of Maximus’s enslavement and his coming to peace with dying.

Achilles had the attributes of a perfect warrior with his god-like speed and combat abilities. However, even though he was Greek’s greatest warrior, he still possessed several flaws that made him fit the role of the Tragic Hero impeccably. Defined by Aristotle, a Tragic Hero is someone who possesses a high status of nobility and greatness, but must have imperfections so that mere mortals cannot relate to the hero. Lastly, the Tragic Hero’s downfall must be partially their own fault through personal choice rather than by an evil act, while also appearing to be not entirely deserved of their unfortunate fate. Achilles is a true Tragic Hero because he withholds all of these traits. Achilles proves to be a good man that puts his loved ones first, reveals his tragic flaws of pride and anger, shows dynamic qualities as a character when his flaws are challenged, and has a moment of clarity at the end of his rage. Achilles truly exemplifies the qualities of a Tragic Hero.

Brutus is the stronger example of a tragic hero in this story. Throughout this play, Brutus commits many faults, falls more drastically than all other characters, and regrets his previous actions by the end of the play.

There is no doubt that tragedy has changed considerably since Aristotle first wrote the definition of tragedy in his Poetics in Ancient Greece, but these changes raise the question of whether modern tragedy still fits the classical definition of tragedy. Tragedy has evolved greatly since the times of the classical tragedies, including Oedipus Rex and Hamlet, to the more modern forms of tragedy, as seen in The Hairy Ape and Death of a Salesman. Despite its evolution and deviation from Aristotle’s definition, modern tragedy holds by the same principles, and retains the same power and message expressed by Aristotelian tragedy.
