It is an original market where you will find unique items from all around the world. The environment has a relaxed Hawaiian feel and the employees are friendly and helpful with excellent product knowledge. They are able to keep their product prices low and pay their employees high by keeping low overhead and using excellent negotiating skills to capture retail locations at great prices. These are a few of the things that makes Trader Joe’s stand out from the rest.

During times economic uncertainty, it is important that individuals know that they an organization that cares and supports them. From the employees’ perspective; they are managed someone with experience in their same specialty who can effectively understand and review their work. Furthermore, they can move up within organization, which gives a reason for them to be loyal to the job. They also have the opportunity to work with others in their field, which allows for knowledge sharing and learning new skills. For this assignment, I decided to go to a grocery store by my house named Meijer. Meijer is just like any other grocery store, similar to Wal-Mart, yet higher quality products than Wal-Mart.
My organization, Trader Joe’s, is not an international business. Their stores are all located in the United States; therefore, I chose Whole Foods, who is a main competitor of Trader Joe’s for this assignment.
Trader Joe’s focuses on a lot of unknowing products in order to satisfied customers’ curiosity. Trader Joe’s also not selling same products, their products change all the time. They put 10 to 15 new products each time into the store which makes customer feel like playing a treasure finding game when they shopping in the store. In this way, customers are more willing to shopping at Trader Joe’s.

Performance management issues can be fixed by maintaining close supervision, setting high standards, but also focusing on developing employee skills needed to reach them. The managers that Publix promote definitely have the potential, drive and talent to be successful and role models for the associates. As the article says, “When conflict is managed well, it can lead to improvements creativity and innovation.” Publix is trying to grow as a company and are slowing integrating into other states. They are struggling to bring the “Publix Culture” into these states and this could help.
The most significant component of Wal-Mart’s success was the way it treated its employees or as they are known as in Wal-Mart “associates”, the beliefs or rules of the Wal-Mart culture makes associates want to provide excellent service to its customers. During visits Walton encouraged associates to pledge to greet customers and ask if they assist them or walking into a Wal-Mart store customers are met by a greeter, an associate who welcomed them and handed out shopping carts (Farhoomand, 2006).

There was also some freedom for store managers to make decisions to improve stores which could make it more profitable. Walmart also took steps to fortify relationships with suppliers over a long term period and is always looking to improve supply chain efficiency.
