Leaders are instrumental to the success or failure of an organization as they have significant influence on the individuals which determines the outcome. A leader’s vision and leadership style relate to the employees and subsequently employees relate to their work. From this connection, the leadership style and behaviours and individual uses may have an influence on important subordinate outcomes, such as performance, satisfaction, and perception of that leader’s effectiveness (Bass, 1997; Bass & Avolio, 1993).
There are various ways to of determining a certain leadership characteristic such as traits, where the personal characteristics of leaders are emphasized to situational leadership theory, proposing that leaders attune their behavior to fit with the development level of their team as a whole (Den Hartog & Koopman, 2002). The research will evaluate the different styles adopted by highly effective leaders in business organisations that focus on a low cost position such as, Walmart and a business organization with a focus on innovation and technology development such as Google. Both organisations are highly successful in their respective industries however they take on a very different approach of managing their employees.
Walmart
Walmart adopts both a transformational and transactional leadership. Transformational leadership can be defined as a leadership style which focuses on the theory that employees function most effective when led in a way that is beyond simple transactions (Burns, 1978). In the case of Walmart, this form is leadership was required for executing strategy and achieving goals. The varied ways of motivation were the promotion of individuals who had done exceedingly well. Take for example, Mike Duke who was promoted to become CEO after the successful tenure in his previous role of handling international operations. The culture was as such that staff were rewarded for good performance at Walmart. There was also some freedom for store managers to make decisions to improve stores which could make it more profitable. Walmart also took steps to fortify relationships with suppliers over a long term period and is always looking to improve supply chain efficiency.
Across the globe, there are CEO’s, managers, and several other individual’s in leadership-type roles that have the expectation of making their company successful in the eyes of the investors, the employees, and the customers that they serve. This may be measured by a company’s gross profitability, employee engagement or overall customer satisfaction. Most companies have leadership models and strategies in place that leaders are expected to use in order to drive the expectations of the company while maintaining consistency across the business. In an effort to examine various types of leadership styles, I have conducted interviews with two individuals that are or have been previously tasked with leading their teams and their company towards success.
Wal-Mart as we know it today evolved from Sam Walton’s goals for great value and great customer service. Mr. Walton’s competitors thought his idea that a successful business could be built around offering lower prices and great service would never work. Mr. Walton also credited the rapid growth of Wal-Mart not just to the low costs that attracted his customers, but also to his associates. He relied on them to give customers the great shopping experience that would keep them coming back. Sam shared his vision for the company with associates in a way that was nearly unheard of in the industry. He made them partners in the success of the company, and firmly believed that this partnership was what made Walmart great.

Hence, the main principle of any theory is to inform practice(Lussier and Achua 2009). Leadership theories could be classified into eight main categories: Great man, trait, behavioral, contingency, Situational, Participative, Relationship , management (Cherry 2010).

Leadership, without doubt, is a significantly important function of management. It helps to aggrandize efficiency and to fulfil an organization’s goals. Leadership is the ability of a manager to induce the subordinates to work with confidence, determination, courage and zeal. It is also defined as ability to influence a group towards the realization of a goal. Leaders should have the capability of developing future visions, and to drive the organizational members to want to attain the visions.
