Tourism in Hong Kong
Introduction:
TOURISM is one of the major economic pillars of Hong Kong: the most
popular city destination in Asia. The Hong Kong government has spent a
big sum of money to strengthen the tourism image of Hong Kong.
Methodology:
In this coursework, I will investigate whether tourism is indeed a
major economic pillar of Hong Kong and if Hong Kong needs tourism. I
will use many resources such as: books (Hong Kong Year Book), internet
(mostly information and data that was published by the Hong Kong
Tourism Board, Hong Kong Tourism Commission), questionnaire (conduct a
questionnaire in popular tourism districts to gather information from
tourists and locals).

Introduction to Hong KongTourism Board:
The Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) is established to promote Hong
Kongas a tourist destination. If Hong Kong attracts a lot of tourist,
the big spending of the tourists will contribute to the Hong Kong
economy. HKTB often uses new strategies to attract tourist to Hong
Kong, especially in those sectors that can bring the highest yield in
terms of visitor spending.
The six main objectives of HKTB are:
* To endeavour to increase the contribution of tourism to Hong Kong

Much like the HKTB, it's job is to enhance our tourism facilities, and

The tourism industry is one of the major pillars of the economy of Hong Kong even though is not in a large percentage of GDP, but it help to bring up the other industry business such as retail sale, merchandise trade, service trade etc. According to Hong Kong’s Census & Statistics Department data in 2004, the tourism industry contributed to 5% of Hong Kong’s GDP. The entire industry employs around 271,800 persons, accounting for 7.2% of total employment.
As tourism is one of the world’s largest lines of businesses, it seems immensely reasonable that it could have a huge impact on people and various places. This is certainly true for Thailand, and it can be viewed in both positive and negative ways. We might be able to divide the way we look at the benefits and problems of tourism into economic, social and environmental impacts.
For the introduction, brief information regarding my purchase and the travel and tourism industry is presented. It was then followed by the explanation of the 2 chosen theories from two different chapters.
Located in Southeast Asia, Thailand has become a well-known destination to many travelers since the early stage of mass tourism. The boost of tourism in Thailand started with Vietnam War where Thailand became a popular destination for the rest and recreation of US military. Since then the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) was established as an official organization to promote the country’s tourism (McDowall & Wang, 2009). Despite a lot of world external factors negatively affected Thailand tourism such as Gulf War 1991, Asia Financial Crisis 1997, SARS 2003 and Tsunami 2004, the overall number of tourists was increasing due to the quick response of the government to the needs of tourism industry and the effect of targeted promotional campaigns (Zhang, Qu & Tavitiyaman, 2009). According to TAT (2014), the international tourist arrivals increased over 333 times from 0.08 million in 1960 to 26.7 million in 2013. And in the same period, tourism revenue rose from US$10 million to US$38 billion. Although Thailand hosted a significant number of tourists and gained a lot of revenue from tourism, Thailand also suffered from negative effects such as AIDS, negative image of sex tourism (Li & Zhang, 1997), degradation of the environment (Koont...
In low-income countries, the use of tax revenues to fund tourism promotions is motivated in part by the belief that tourism growth will improve income distribution by expanding demand for relatively low-skilled labor. Thailand’s tourism boom, fueled in part by a series of publicly funded promotional campaigns, has coincided with a period of worsening inequality. I find that growth of inbound tourism demand raises aggregate household income, but worsens its distribution. This is because tourism sectors are not especially labor-intensive in the Thai context, and because the expansion of foreign tourism demand creates general balance effects that undermine profitability in tradable sectors such as agriculture from which the poor derive
Tourism development is a crucial part of Singapore's energy to transform into a lively city and an enhanced economy. Our tourism scene has changed throughout the years, with the presentation of amusement changing tourism offerings, for example, the FORMULA ONE night race and the Integrated Resorts. Other than creating tourist spend, these tourism items give more relaxation choices
Tourism is a typical activity of fashion that the public participate widely and it has grown in importance over recorded human history. Innumerable articles refer tourism as “the world’s largest industry”; policy-makers, analysts, and scholars often speak of the size of the tourism compared to that of other industries (Smith 2004: 26). These series of misleading statement, together with the mass media’s reports (out of context), make the idea that tourism is a single large industry branded into many people’s minds. However, in this essay I will demonstrate that it is a simplistic and misleading idea, which should be replaced by the plural term, “tourism industries”. Moreover, tourism is not the world’s largest industry, but largest service sector.
Tourism is often associated with traveling to places away from home. Tourism has a big impact on the economic growth of some countries, which define the shape of their cities by producing different sectors like historic districts, convention centers, museums, malls, hotels, restaurants, and the list can be endless. Furthermore, tourism elements have been developed by cities for a variety of reasons including: situating themselves in the world by drawing a positive image and attracting visitors and for their money.
The economy can be clearly identified as the most beneficial aspect of tourism. “According to recent statistics, tourism provides about 10% of the world’s income and employs almost one tenth of the world’s workforce” (Mirbabayev, 2007). In Australia alone, Tourism contributed $87.3 billion in 2012, and employed 908,434 (7.9%) people (Kookana & Duc Pham, 2013). Tourism is “one of the most profitable and rapidly developing industries in the world” (Popushoi, 2004). Every year the number of tourists increase dramatically and consequently the revenues from tourism will increase substantially.
For the past few decades other forms of tourism, also known as niche tourism, have been becoming more popular, particularly:
Tourism is the one of economic and social activities that increasingly vital. Number of travellers domestic and international is increasing. In fact, several countries in present world develop tourism sectors as primary sector which generate national income. According to Salah Wahab and Cooper (2003). Tourism is also sector which involves role that mutually link between government, private sector and also public.
Cunha (1997) ADD that there have always have several tourist motivations to travel, by religious, commercial message , sport, leisure time or the simpleton desire to know other people and cultures. To further improve the outgrowth and ontogenesis of touristry , Mack (1995) highlighted the following variables: the oncoming of motor traffic , the augmentation of paid leave of absence , the trend of yearly genuine wages, the leaning to a specific monetary smoothing, reduction of hours work and the increase of free metre available, the growth of life anticipation , the changes and the similarity of some present professions. Gary Cooper , John Fletcher , Wanhill, Gb and Shepherd (1998) concludes that touristry diligence is a major economic action worldwide, and is currently a basic action for different nations and district with a nonstop development of this movement in the course of Recent epoch years (Krippendorf, 1989). Beni (2003) considered that all tourism activities that make up the tourism, hotel is one of the most important sub-sphere , with the trapping to establish itself as a key fruit component of this activeness in stoppage ing the bit of hotel establishment , while growing tourist activity (Batista, 2003). Pine tree (1995) considered that the tourism, hotel is one of the important
Rivalry among competitors will be more intense depending on the outlook of the industry. Although, inbound tourism in Thailand has been growing steady since 1960 and the number of international tourists arrival in Thailand increased every year. Meanwhile, there is a huge number of inbound tour operator increasing every year (Department of Tourism, 2016). In addition, Thailand's tourism business operator, which account for more 70% is a SMEs entrepreneurs who must face the burden of the uphill competition that is circulating.
At the present time, one of the inseparable parts of the economic growth is considered as tourism industry. Commonly, tourism is the movement of people to other places for business or leisure purposes as well as covers their activities. Holloway and Humphreys defines that the places where tourists come and spend their money are called as “tourist destinations” in other words “receiving areas”. Many countries have been improving tourism to overcome economic difficulties since it is growing fast. The industry activities have been demonstrated a general positive trend in the economy and it has already become the inherent part of economic development. In host countries, tourism has led to such positive consequences as the improved infrastructure,
When people travel to a destination, they sure have some motivation to motivate them to make the decision. ‘Motivation’ is the key term that will make the tourist to consider the reason to travel around. During the decision making process, people will consider some of the reasons before they confirm travel to a destination. The research that has conducted in The Netherland found out a remarkably high propensity to travel, 70% of the populations are taking one holiday per year and 24% was taking two holidays per year for holiday. Some of the people will affect their decision making by looking at destination image or some of the impact advertising. On the internet, business people will use image and advertising to attract tourist to travel to the destination by using image that they edit before. This is part of the marketing to promote their country to tourist. For family traveler, they will consider the distance and transportation travel to the destination. When go for travel, tourist will bring the whole family to travel. Then, they will consider old people who travel long journey are very hard for them. If one of the family members are senior citizen, they need to consider their healthy. Some of the senior citizen cannot take long journey, such as they have sickness. Bring children go for holiday also need to be consider. Some of the children will afraid of the highest in the plane, so they will feel uncomfortable. There is plenty of reason need to consider before making any decision to travel. For understanding tourist motivation and decision making is for two main reason, planning consideration and economic consideration. (Page & Connell, 2009) Before the tourist travel to a destination, they need to think about culture, climat...
