Toshiba: The Future is Theirs
In 1875 Hisashige Tanaka established Tanaka Seizo-sho, Japan’s first manufacturer of telegraphic equipment. The company thrived for over 60 years as an independent entity. In 1890, Hakunetsu-sha & Co., Ltd, was founded. It was Japan’s first manufacturing facility of electric incandescent lamps. Then in 1939, the two companies merged to become Tokyo Shibaura Denki. They were now an electric equipment manufacturer. The company’s reputation was established rapidly and they soon became known simply as Toshiba. They made this official with the name change to Toshiba in 1978.
Throughout the company’s long life there have been many major inventions that have guaranteed them a place in history. Among these are the following world’s firsts:
1. 1967—first automatic zip code reader
2. 1970—first color video phone
3. 1986—first laptop personal computers
4. 1995—developed high-density optical disc, DVD
They have remained successful for many years because of their ability to stay on top of the world of technology. This is no small feat. Numerous companies have been lost because of a rapidly changing technology market that most were unable to keep up with the pace.
With a resume of inventions spanning more than 120 years, a solid financial history and their status of being a multinational corporation, where does Toshiba go from here? Can they continue to keep up the pace of the past with the technology market changing more each and every day? What can they do to maintain their current level of success without compromising their values and commitment to the global society? To sum up all these questions: What’s next for Toshiba?
Before looking at what the next step should be for Toshiba, it is necessary to examine what the driving forces behind the operation and all its decisions are. For them, The Basic Commitment is this force. In 1990 this Commitment was formulated as a “statement of management philosophy.” Every management decision made is done so by the guidance set forth in the Basic Commitment, which follows:
We, the Toshiba Group companies, based on our total commitment to people and to the future, are determined to help create a higher quality of life for all people, and to do our part to help ensure that progress continues within the world community
Having a large market share can be very helpful because companies earn more money to produce more. They also create brand loyalties even if they increase their prices. However, companies who have large market shares often times do not provide a lot of innovation. These companies usually feel they don’t need to get ahead because they hold such a big share in the market. This sometimes hurts their brand because when new products enter the market with cool features, consumer are likely to be engaged and
The company is also leading the way in innovativeness and has already received recognition for introducing innovative products. This is one of the strengths of the company since innovative products will help to differentiate its products from the other competitor products as well as the new products can be exclusively branded as compared to the other flagship products from older Soviet times.

Philips’ major rival, Matsushita, started as a small electrical house-ware manufacturer in 1918. The company expanded rapidly and soon introduced a flood of new products. By the end of the century, Matsushita grew into a global player with powerful brand names such as Panasonic, Quasar Technics, and JVC.
Sharp’s business philosophy is to use its innovative technology “to contribute to the culture, benefits and welfare of people throughout the world” (Noda 25). Sharp is constantly trying to position itself as a leader in innovation as further supported by its business creed, which states to “constantly be aware of the need to innovate and improve” (Noda 25). However, this focus on innovation and creativity has not always been consistent with how the company has been operated. The history of the company is replete with periods of both innovation and imitation.
IBM is a multinational corporation that started its activities in 1911. But its origins can be traced back to 1890, during the height of the Industrial Revolution. It was first known as the Computing-Recording Company, and then in 1924, it took the name of International Business Machines. Nowadays, this multinational company is known as the ¡§Big Blue¡¨
No company that falls behind the competition is guilty of standing completely still. But sometimes our efforts fail because of the level of commitment to change. – Tom Kelley and David Kelley Organizational Issue BlackBerry, formerly known as Research in Motion (RIM), was a market leader and innovator for smartphone products. The business and government sectors found the BlackBerry device particularly useful because of its email capabilities, superior security system, and convenient keyboard. As the smartphone industry began to shift its focus towards the average, everyday customer, competition increased, and BlackBerry’s first-mover advantage began to decline.

My report is on the company Hewlett – Packard (HP) which was founded in 1939. I mainly focused on the Personal Systems Group (PSG): business and consumers PCs mobile computing devices and workstations which is one of the major industries of HP. In order to succeed in the business industry a company needs to understand its customer’s needs and create wants for them. HP found out that the customer needed light weight, useful notebook PCs through its Research & Development (R&D) centre. Hence, it created a want; a New Commercial Notebook PC Compaq Evo Notebook N1015v which packs the power and performance necessary for mobility into a stylish design for only $899(US $). HP also finds out about its customer needs through online feedback forms and survey. Via that, HP was also able to understand that not everyone are able to use their products hence it has created this HP accessibility products which can be accessed by anyone including people with disabilities and age – limitations. Example of such product under the PSG industry is the Mobile Speak Pocket which was specially made for the visually impaired people. ( Refer To Exhibit 1a – 1c )
2015 and 2016 shook the confidence of RadioShack first with the bankruptcy and later the resignation of the CEO, Ron Garriques, who served less than a year in the position. Although one may consider these to be significant setbacks, I view these as opportunities, blessings and stepping stones for future of the firm. These events mark an opportunity for the Company to wipe its plate clean and make itself relevant again. It must use its rich history as a one-stop shop for offering a wide-variety of higher quality electronics to fuel the rebound story and transform the Company from being a buyer’s second thought to regaining the buyer’s focus.
In 2010, because of its innovation strategy and acquisitions, Lenovo became one of the world’s largest PC producers by having achieved a considerable market share (Lenovo 2013b).

Long ago, people were simple and didn’t have many technologies. They used to take so much time in planning their projects, researching, and saving and recording their studying. Look around, this world changed a lot. There are cars, airplanes, computers, and many other technologies. Technology can be found everywhere, and we use depend on it a lot. One of the most important technologies is computers and laptops. Many people use them today in their daily lives and it eases many things for them.
Keeping up with technology is difficult, tiresome, and firms find it very costly to keep at pace with it. Technology rapidly and constantly keeps on changing. Being at par technologically requires extensive research and strategic analysis of acquiring new innovation. Enforcing new technology requires staff retraining and in some cases making employees redundant.
