When an SLP examines a four-year old child with tongue thrust, he or she should examine the tongue. During speech and/or swallowing, the tongue will move forward in an exaggerated way. At rest, the tongue may also lie forward too far and may protrude between the teeth during speech or swallowing and at rest. Teeth are another structure that should be kept in mind. The position of the tongue in a child with tongue thrust can cause labioversion of the incisors (teeth tilt towards lips). Anterior open bite is another characteristic of tongue thrust. Enlarged tonsils and adenoids are a third possible sign of tongue thrust. These can cause blocked airways, which results in an open-mouth breathing pattern. Tongue thrust can cause difficulties in

In “How to Tame a Wild Tongue,” Gloria Anzaldúa explains the implications of living under the influence of two cultures. She begins with a story of how she was punished by a teacher for correcting the pronunciation of her name. Nonspeech signs associated with hypokinetic dysarthria may include characteristics dealing with the face, eyes, hands, arms, and trunk. The individual may have an expressionless look to their face as well as weakness with gestures in the hands, arms, and face that would normally match the person’s prosody when speaking. Overall, their social interaction with others can be emotionless. Eye blinking occurs less frequently than normal and their head gaze does not match where their eyes are looking. These patients swallow infrequently which leads to drooling. A tremor may be present in the jaw, lips, and tongue as well as limited movement during speech even though strength of these structures is often normal.

Swallowing is a complex action involving the muscles and nerves within the pharynx and esophagus, a swallowing center in the brain, and nerves that connect the pharynx and esophagus to the swallowing center (medicine net). But what would happen if it became difficult to swallow, or even worse, you lost the ability to swallow? What are the causes of this and what treatments are available? There are many specific causes that include physical obstruction of the pharynx or esophagus, diseases of the brain, diseases of the smooth muscle of the esophagus, diseases of skeletal muscle of the pharynx, and miscellaneous diseases (e.g., Parkinson’s disease and dementia) (Dysphagia, n.d.). Intervention for patients with dysphagia is diet modification of solid foods and/or liquids.
Language is more than just a means of communication; it is part of one's culture, self-expression, and identity. “How to Tame a Wild Tongue” is a chapter from the book ,Borderlands/La Frontera: The New Mestiza ,written by Gloria E. Anzaldua. In this chapter, Anzaldua talks about her Chicana life in a period full of immigrant controversies where Latinos living in the United States were struggling to find their national identity and a language to speak freely without feeling any shame and fear from others. She expresses the dilemma she had to face about her own language in which she was often criticized and scolded for her improper Spanish accent. From these experiences she labeled these attacks on languages as “Linguistic Terrorism”. Anzaldúa

After a few days, have passed since the newly elected president, Donald J. Trump, was put into office and he has already put out an executive order on the continuation of the Dakota Access Pipeline. This order was a major upset for the Native Americans, for they had just finished protesting it and succeeded when former president Barrack H. Obama had set out an executive order to halt the construction of the pipeline. In the song, Hook in Mouth by Megadeth, the verse “A little man with a big eraser, changing history”, it can relate to what’s going on here as President Trump is the little man with the eraser completely ignoring the history that Sioux Tribe had on their sacred grounds. The Sioux Tribe protest once again for Sacred Stone near the Missouri River in North Dakota, as President Trump signs the executive order to approve the Dakota Pipeline. The natives protest, because it has a possibility to contaminate their drinking water and damage the sacred burial sites

The Function of Lips and Their Biological Significance Lipids are biological molecules and are insoluble in aqueous solutions but are soluble in organic solvents. Specific lipids have a physiological importance to humans; they have three major functions; serving as structural components of biological membranes, act as vitamins and hormones, provide energy storage (triaculglycerols). Lipids are made up of the elements carbon, hydrogen and oxygen. Lipids can exist as fats, oils and waxes. Fat and oils are similar in structure as they are triglycerides, however, they physically differ at room temperature fats are solid and oils liquid.
