Shlomo Yitzchaki is one of the most influential rabbis in Jewish history. Born in Troyes, France in 1040, Shlomo Yitzchaki grew up Jewish and learned from his father. When his father died in 1046, Shlomo Yitzchaki lived with his mother until 1057 when he married his wife and joined the Yeshiva of Yaakov Ben-Yakar. Since then he has become a staple in Jewish learning and Jewish history. Today we know him as Rashi. Rashi was and is very influential to Jewish scholars because of the way his commentary spread, the simplicity and variation of his commentary, and the controversy of his method that is still discussed in modern times.
She then immediately follows up with a way to fix it and demand respect. Shes trying to connect with the audience and shows that she has been in the same place, that she can relate. You can see that she has done her research, she uses plenty of statistics to give you a visual of what she is talking about as well as quoting people from organizations and giving them the appropriate credit. She mentions in 2005 at yale, her alma mater, 15 students sat in the admissions office until they were removed by police. These individuals were demanding changes to the financial aid policy.
In John Leo’s “The Beauty of Argument”, Leo discusses how discussion and debate has changed drastically over time.
Taylor Swift is once again under fire over the allegedly racist theme of her new music video for “Wildest Dreams.”
My English 1310 course was taught by Professor Daniel Stuart. He taught us the concept of academic writing and why it is important. Academic writing is the process of down ideas, using a formal tone, deductive reasoning and third person. Writing done to carry out the requirements of a college or university on a research based level. It requires a starting point or introduction, followed by a thesis on the preferred topic, then comes proving and disproving of the evidence based arguments. Learning academic writing is important because it is a way to communicate our thoughts clearly and originality. It helps us think and see what evidence we can come up to contribute to that thinking. This course approached this idea of academic writing by
On December 2,2015 I went to to the Lynnhaven building to receive some feedback on my agreement paper for English 111. It was a very rainy day after running through the rain when I reached the writing center room. There was a yellow note saying that the writing center was in the student center until December 4,2015. After reading the note I ran back in the rain to my car.It was to cold to walk it was raining. As I approached the student center I was told by a security guard that the tutoring lab was located on the third floor. I had walked up three flights of stairs. When I had finally reached the third floor,I walk into the tutoring lab. There were about eight tables, but only four staff members and one student. Amen had approached me asking what did I need help with today. I replied saying that I would like some feedback on my paper for English. He then pointed to the writing table and said “she can assist you with your paper”.
As it opens with imagery reminiscent of the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans, an event that devastated the black communities in the areas affected. The delayed assistance in New Orleans by the U.S. government stirred some controversy that led many to question how much America really cares about its black communities. Nonetheless, Beyoncé’s video is full of imagery that is associated with black culture, including historical references to black communities in the south. But what is really important about “Formation” are the lyrics. With lyrics like “My daddy Alabama, Momma Louisiana, You mix that negro with that Creole make a Texas Bama” and “I like my baby hair with baby hair and afros, I like my negro nose with Jackson Five nostrils,” Beyoncé is undoubtedly declaring her pride for her blackness as well as defending her child Blue Ivy who has always been scrutinized for the way her hair looked. Thus, this song is obviously geared toward the Black community which is obvious due to the lyrics and the imagery in the music video. To put it plainly, this song is a proclamation of Black pride and shouldn’t be thought of in any other way. However, after performing it at the Super Bowl people of other ethnicities became aware of the song and became offended by her performance as well as the lyrics. Controversy arose as people pointed out her backup dancers were dressed similarly to the Black Panther
Aside from threatening our freedom, ignoring the differences between personal and corporate privacy results in unusual conclusions. We often make a clear distinction between general corporate rights and personal rights, because they have different meanings and purposes in different contexts. And we rightfully treat humans and corporations differently. For example, individual and corporate taxes are not one in the same. Unlike most individuals, corporations end up saving money each year when it comes to taxation, as Catherine Rampell points out in her opinion article, “Corporations are people. So what if people were corporations?” But in recent years, the United States has accorded corporations more rights on the grounds that they are, in a
Of course, when Betty Birner writes “[l]anguage will never stop changing; it will continue to respond to the needs of the people who use it” (source D) in her article, she disagrees, maintaining that so often as an individual utilizes a language based upon one’s individual experiences the dialect becomes true. She believes that as long as one can individually express themselves through the use of words, correct or not, the phrases automatically become unerring. However, the point so mentioned simply does not stand. A dialect cannot be considered correct if it fails to follow the rules of Standard English. The rules may have been set years ago; however, their necessity becomes apparent when one thinks of a language’s comprehensibility. For instance,
There aren’t many people on Instagram that use their page as an outlet for how they feel. It may be with the belief that no one cares to look at or like a picture that is dealing with something that may come with a lot of people going against what is being said. When looking on Miley Cyrus Instagram one can infer that she is very outspoken and feels very strongly for the rights of animals, while also promoting her vegan lifestyle. For example, there is a picture of Cyrus lying in bed, her face is red as well as her eyes with tears streaming down. In her caption, she speaks of how she is upset at a picture of a woman who has posed with what appears to be a bobcat she has killed. Next to that picture is the woman standing with Donald Trump. She quotes how she is disgusted with the actions of this woman and how Trump is also in support of her actions. She even states “…I think I may vomit...it is not your job to decide when a living things life is over…& YOU DT [Donald Trump] ARE NOT GO NO MATTER HOW MUCH YOU THINK YOU ARE!!!”. One can sense the anger, fear, and sadness in Cyrus’ caption. It is because of her Instagram that Cyrus is able to speak up for what she believes in; while also spreading the word out to those that are unaware of what is going on. One can see how Cyrus is empowered to make a difference in the world by her ability to speak out against
...i, talk show host, and these websites need to respect the celebrity’s privacy. It is understandable that these pestering people need to make a living also, so in result of respecting privacy, the celebrity can willingly award them select information about their lives. The Pledge of Allegiance states, “I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the republic for which it stands one nation under God with liberty and justice for all.” “Justice for all,” everyday our young scholars recite it and we say it during special events. However, we lack the ability to comprehend. The Pledgee says that all citizens of the United States are entitled to justice. This requires the right to walk freely, the right to speak without worry and the right to have privacy as it is their birth right. No matter the profession or salary privacy belongs to everyone.
Appiah’s first feature identifies the moral blind spot as “contemporary arguments leveled against the practice, even if those arguments are currently doing little to sway broad public opinion.” (Appiah, ) Any argument that something could be morally wrong in the future will most likely not be approved by society. This feature really got me thinking about all the things that personally I find wrong and whether or not if there are arguments against them. What are some of the things that I find morally wrong? I find meat eating morally wrong and there are many arguments leveled against this practice. So does this mean that meat eating will be morally unacceptable in the future? I hope so.
that she has once portrayed. Up until this point she has been notorious for being a private person and someone who closely regulates the images that are released to the public. It is in this moment that she is wearing a black hoodie with the hood over her head. The significance of this moment is not in the fact that she is undone but rather her close resemblance to Trayvon Martin. Martin was the Florida teen that was shot in cold blood by George Zimmerman, who was later acquitted of any wrongdoing. In wearing this black hoodie it is as if Beyoncé is saying, much like Barack Obama’s sentiments, “it could have been me”, “it could have been my child”. This black hoodie has come to represent all the negative stereotypies of young Black teenagers being nothing more than “thugs”. This first close up is what is attempting to destroy this perception and is attempting to set the tone for her whole
The main focus of her tweet is “…“They [The concert goers] weren’t safe. I will never understand this hate! This was supposed to be their safe place!” The inclusion of her tweet brings a new perspective to light on the situation, and also raises a new point, this attack happened in a concert venue. In recent memory prior to this, there had been no terrorist attacks against concert or sports venues (Las Vegas notwithstanding, as it took place after this event). The inclusion of the quote gives hints at a much broader question, which could be considered from an ideological standpoint: “If concerts are no longer safe, what is?” This leads to other ideological issues, does one attack make all concerts unsafe? Does two? This gray area could be cause panic to readers who interpret her tweet that way, How do we know what is safe and what isn’t? One might conclude that we don’t, causing panic. It may be fair to speculate on if that is why her tweet wasn’t included in any other
This hatred and admiration from different impassioned publics occurs simultaneously and separately. Every statement from public intellectuals is qualified through the beliefs and value spheres of these impassioned publics, and thus every statement made by intellectuals either helps further their ideas, or is against them and seen as wrong. Twitter and other social media outlets broadly show that the kinds of messages Hannah Arendt was receiving is not exclusive to her time or her situation. Public intellectuals receive death threats, hate-filled messages, angry rants, and general condescension from impassioned publics for all to see on Twitter, Facebook, and other platforms. Any comment made online can receive backlash because there are so many impassioned publics on any imaginable issue.
