In the orature stories you will find various aspects of morals, traditions and art such as spinning. In “Three Spinners” you will find a mother who must lie because she is ashamed to have a lazy daughter, so she must lie to the Queen. In, “Tom Tit Tot” you will find a mother who is ashamed to have to explain that singing of her song in degrading her daughter but she must turn it around and say something else to the King as he is in passing, for the sake to save her daughter. The morals in these stories have to do with trying to live up to a higher standard than need be, the traditions have to do with women must spin skeins everyday to prove their worth, and the art of spinning seems to be a huge part of the culture from back then. As the mother is done having her supper she is sitting outside spinning her flax, she sings a sweet melody “My darter ha’ ate five, five pies to-day” and along comes the King. As the King is listening and he can’t hear quite clearly and so he approaches and ask the mother “What was that you were singing, my good woman?” the mother was so ashamed to let him hear what her daughter had been doing, so she sang, instead of that: My darter ha’ spun five, fie skeins to-day” because she knew that a King wouldn’t be happy with a woman eating pies all day. The morals and beliefs of this time in that days society was very big on spinning flax as a sign of a hardworking woman. As the mother is speaking with the King he explains to that he need a wife “Stars o’ mine”..I never heard tell of any one that could do that.” He’s beyond flabbergasted that someone knows how to spin flax that much in a day that he msut make this young woman his
Woman during this time were worthy only if they were beautiful and often treated as their husbands belongings. Joe says “Ah’m satisfied de way ah is so long as ah be yo husband, ah don’t keer bout nothing else.” (p.1442). He is proud she is very attractive and treats her as an object and feels he owns her. During the medieval ages, women were described as evil creatures that would destroy anyone standing in their way to get what they want. People claimed that women's malicious intentions clouded their judgment from doing the right thing forcing them to be selfish. In Chaucer's The Canterbury Tales and Malory’s The Death of King Arthur, both focus on women’s behavioral impulses through their dishonesty, manipulation, and their promiscuity.

Wang Lung needs a wife so saves up the little money he has and buys a woman who is a slave named O-lan. O-lan is sold to Wang Lung so she can take care of the home, cooking and bear children. Wang Lung is disappointed when he first sees O-lan because she does not have bound feet which was a desirable quality at that time but he does enjoy when O-lan has the food ready when he comes in a night from the land. Wang Lung is very proud when O-lan makes cakes that no one else in the village knows how to makes and when his family comes to feast for the new year at their house.
At first, the husband has an attitude that he doesn’t care about this blind man that’s friends with his wife. Then it almost seems like his uncaring attitude turns into somewhat of a jealousy about the blind man as his wife is always talking about him, and showing her husband the tapes they recorded that got sent back and forth to one another. Witchcraft is said to be the most widespread cultural phenomenon in existence today and throughout history. Even those who shun the ideas of witchcraft cannot discount the similarities in stories from all corners of the globe. Witchcraft and its ideas have spread across racial, religious, and language barriers from Asia to Africa to America. Primitive people from different areas in the world have shockingly similar accounts of witchcraft occurrences. In most cases the strange parallels cannot be explained and one is only left to assume that the tales hold some truth. Anthropologists say that many common elements about witchcraft are shared by different cultures in the world. Among these common elements are the physical characteristics and the activities of supposed witches. I will go on to highlight some of the witch characteristic parallels found in printed accounts from different parts of the world and their comparisons to some famous fairytales.
They serve many purposes, as both demonstrated by Lurie’s article “What Fairy Tales Tell Us,” as well as what is investigated in this paper. Nevertheless, one must keep in mind how dated of many of these stories are; what some may view as having a deeper meaning, such as abuse, may also be reflecting the habits and occurrences of the time period, such as seen in “Hansel and Gretel.” That is not to say, however, that these stories are to be taken lightly. Ostensibly, romantic tales where true love is apparently the only motive may actually be harbouring important ethics and beliefs. This can be seen in the tale of Sleeping Beauty; criticized in modern times for being a feminist’s nightmare, the tale actually consists of genuine messages about the world. It takes insipid daily lessons and turns them into something magical, or, more eloquently, “the fairy tale survives because it presents experience in vivid symbolic form”
Fairy tales portray wonderful, elaborate, and colorful worlds as well as chilling, frightening, dark worlds in which ugly beasts are transformed into princes and evil persons are turned to stones and good persons back to flesh (Guroian). Fairytales have long been a part of our world and have taken several forms ranging from simple bedtime stories to intricate plays, musicals, and movies. However, these seemingly simple stories are about much more than pixie dust and poisoned apples. One could compare fairytales to the new Chef Boyardee; Chef Boyardee hides vegetables in its ravioli while fairytales hide society’s morals and many life lessons in these outwardly simple children stories. Because of this fairytales have long been instruments used to instruct children on the morals of their culture. They use stories to teach children that the rude and cruel do not succeed in life in the long run. They teach children that they should strive to be kind, caring, and giving like the longsuffering protagonists of the fairytale stories. Also, they teach that good does ultimately defeat evil. Fairy tales are not just simple bedtime stories; they have long been introducing cultural moral values into young children.
Literature gives a reader access to moral lessons that are applicable. Literature like the Canterbury Tales give lessons about the dangers of flattery and that appearance can be deceiving. This was accomplished in the Nun’s Priest’s Tale and the Wife of Bath’s Tale. Both stories offered insight into the lessons Chaucer was trying to the reader. The Nun’s Priest’s Tale tells the reader not to be a Chanticleer and be fooled by the flattery of the fox. Instead the reader is told to guard their heart aginst honeyed words. Secondly, The Wife of Bath’s Tale tells the reader to not be so quick to judge something by its appearance. There is a chance that it is not what the reader might first judge it to be. These lessons are not archaic, but revelant to modern day life. They can be applied to everyday situations and remain useful.
Women’s myths were thought to be irrelevant and not socially dominant which as an effect overlook them. Generally, these myths made assumptions to sex differences almost resembling those that give credit to male dominance, while transforming these characterizations and reversing the moral interpretations. For example, men are childish and women are mature, men are morally weak but women are virtuous, men are brutish and women are gentle, and men are hardheaded and power-hungry while women are cooperative. In a society unbridled with double standards and set views about women, one may wonder the origins of such beliefs. It might come as a surprise that these ideals and standards are embedded and have been for centuries in the beloved fairy tales we enjoyed reading as kids. In her analytical essay, “To Spin a Yarn: The Female Voice in Folklore and Fairy Tales”, Karen Rowe argues that fairy tales present “cultural norms which exalt passivity, dependency, and self-sacrifice as a female’s cardinal virtues.” Rowe presents an excellent point, which can be supported by versions of the cult classics, “Cinderella” and “Snow White”. Charles Perrault’s “ The Little Glass Slipper” and the Brothers Grimm’s “ Snow White” exemplify the beliefs that females are supposed to be docile, dependent on the male persona and willing to sacrifice themselves. In many cases, when strong female characters are presented they are always contradicting in these characteristics, thus labeled as villainous. Such is the case of the Cinderella’s stepsisters in Perrault’s “Cinderella” and the stepmother in the Brothers Grimm’s “Snow White.” These female characters face judgment and disapproval when they commit the same acts as male characters. With such messages rooted in our beloved fairy tales it is no wonder that society is rampant with these ideals about women and disapprove of women when they try to break free of this mold.
One hot sunny day her aunt sent her to the market for a loaf of bread. While she was getting the bread the king servant made an announcement in the middle of the market. ?Here ye! Here ye!
