The role of God is presented as hopeful based off devout Puritan beliefs presented in The Crucible by Auther Miller and “To My Dear and Loving Husband” by Anne Bradstreet. The role of God is based off the acknowledgment of hope; which is commonly expressed in Puritan literature. In The Crucible, the people of Salem are able to combine Church and law through their visionary ideas of God. In “To My Dear and Loving Husband,” God is indirectly mentioned as gracious because of how the narrator speaks of her faith. These pieces of literature express the underlying truth to Puritan writing. The reason God is mentioned can be understood through context. Although Puritan literature is very straightforward, the values of God have an underlying truth which are vital to recognizing all the concepts of Puritan faith. The Puritan way of living consists of making decisions in regards to the Bible and religious focus in everyday life. The values of these people come first, the outcome of combining Church and State. Miller is able to recognize history repeating itself when looking past all the chaos in the 1950s. The ‘Red Scare’ drives people to make irrational decisions, labelling anyone and everyone a ‘communist’ just as the townsfolk labelled innocent women a ‘witch.’ Because of constant reminders of God’s judgment, Puritans are under a lot of religious pressure, leading to the development of their
