Mikaela Lopez Ms. Matthews ELA 8 5/31 The Hate of Maycomb “Mockingbirds don’t do anything but make music for us to enjoy. That’s why it’s a sin to kill a mockingbird,”(Lee 103). This statement is important in To Kill a Mockingbird because we can see many characters symbolized as a mockingbird.To Kill a Mockingbird follows a young girl named Scout navigating her childhood life. This includes odd interactions with her mysterious neighbor, Boo Radley, who her town strongly disapproves of, and it includes the repercussions of her father Atticus representing a man named Tom Robinson, who is colored, in court. This makes the case “controversial” because the town they live in, Maycomb, is racist and cannot see how Atticus is doing the right thing by representing an innocent man. Atticus replies to this complaint by telling her, “‘Alexandra, Calpurnia’s not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn’t have gotten along without her all these years. She’s a faithful member of this family and you’ll simply have to accept things the way they are,’” (155). Even after Atticus tells this to Alexandra, she still acts cold towards Calpurnia and even is cold towards Atticus, even though his decision was made because Calpurnia is raising the children well and needs the money. The last time we can see Atticus’ selflessness receiving hate is after the case with Tom Robinson and Mayella Ewell is over. Atticus represents Tom so well that the jurors take hours to make a decision, even though Tom is found guilty in the end. This upset Mayella’s father. “Atticus was leaving the post office when Mr. Ewell approached him, cursed him, spat on him, and threatened to kill him,”
