Individual identity is very important in one’s life. Our identity forms and changes depending on the hardships or high points in life. Three pieces of writing that show characteristics of individual identity forming are Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech, Of Mice and Men, and To Kill a Mockingbird. There are three characteristics that makes one’s individual identity. They are known as actions, appearance, and personality.
An example, of one of the three characteristics that make individual identity, is Martin Luther King Jr.’s, “I Have a Dream” speech. The speech shows the action of Mr. King and the actions he is willing to take. A quote that describes his actions is, “With this faith, we will be able to work together, to pray together, to struggle together, to got to jail together, to stand up for freedom together, knowing that we will be free one day” (King). Personality is best shown through Harper Lee’s novel, To Kill a Mockingbird. Lee shows personality through her quote, “I wouldn’t be too certain of that,” I said. Jem’s free dispensation of my pledge irked me, but precious noontime minutes were ticking away” (Lee 23). Scout’s feisty attitude shows through this part in the book. Her attitude gets her into trouble, but only because she is very protective over Atticus and is confused why people are calling him names. Lee shows Calpurnia’s personality through the quote, “There’s some folks who don’t eat like us,” she whispered fiercely,” but you ain’t called on to contradict ‘em at the table when they don’t. That boy’s yo’ comp’ny and if he wants to eat up the tablecloth you let him, you hear?” (Lee 24). Calpurnia’s kindness for other people shows Scout the correct way to treat a guest.
