Strategic Issues
Reputation and Social Stigma
One of the biggest issues Tinder faces is its reputation. Founded with the intent of connecting like minded individuals, Tinder’s reputation has been reduced to an app for hook-ups and one night stands. Tinder has done many things right like easing the way people communicate with potential matches, wherein people no longer have to be in social situations that encourage conversations. Users could be sitting on a couch and opt-in to flirt instead of having to drink at a bar. But owing to the reputation that Tinder has, there is a big fear of “What if someone recognizes me off Tinder?” and subsequently labels the user a “slut”. Subsequently, owing to the fact that Rad has had a sexual harassment

A similar cyber attack threat became true for Ashley Madison, a website that enables married users seeking affairs to connect with potential partners, when detailed information about users was leaked. Consequently, a lot of private user data including home addresses and credit card information, was released to the public and led to extortion of some clients. This not only caused irreversible damage to the lives of the people who were indulging in such a social media platform but also to the reputation and reliability of the safety of information on such a service. Subsequently, in order to avoid such an event occurring on its platforms, Match has then invested in infrastructure to protect against attack, but it could also be vulnerable if there were attacks on third parties associated with the app due to which it needs to keep an eye on how to mitigate risk as much as …show more content…
This share of people leave an unsolved problem for Tinder - how do you make Tinder an acceptable story to tell? The best bet would be to tap into Tinder’s user growth beyond just online dating. Tinder has great potential, especially in emerging markets, through the diversification of services it provides on its app. By creating features for user differentiation that can include toggles for “casual hook-ups”, “dating”, and “marriage,” Tinder can create niches within its own system to tap into individuals who are turned off by the current reputation of the app. This not only empowers users to curate their online dating experience but also helps Tinder to bring it back to its original intent of connecting
With dating sites, and other sites like online polls, people who are not honest with the information they put down can have a negative effect on the outcomes the site will provide for the
Indian dating was orderly and the documentary Meet the Patels featured many successful couples that were happy after following the Indian dating culture. For Ravi’s parents, they had exactly 10 minutes of talking before it was decided that they were going to be married and have a future together. It’s mind blowing that it worked that well for them, but I believe that in America and in today’s pop culture - Ten minutes with a person won’t cut it. There are too many secrets and too much about a person that’s left to
Journalist, Nancy Jo Sales, in her expository article, “Tinder and the Dawn of the ‘Dating Apocalypse’,” destroys the appearance of today’s young adults, specifically men, because of the method they use the dating application Tinder. The audience Sales is informing consist of people pertaining to the upper class as seen as evidence of the expensive brands, such as Ralph Lauren, Louis Vuitton, and Michael Kors, advertise in the 2015 August issue of Vanity Fair. Sales message is that today’s youth use of Tinder is to promote various types of sexual behavior, which in effect causes the decay of commitment to relationships. In order to get her message across to her audience, Sales uses rhetorical appeals of both ethos & pathos in addition to imagery
In “A Million First Dates” (The Atlantic, Jan/Feb 2013), Dan Slater argues commiting to a stable relationship is negatively influenced by online dating because of a decline in commitment in couples. Essentially, the more options a person is given to find the perfect person in a short amount of time, the less they are inclined to stay in a relationship. For example, Slater’s case study subject, Jacob, a man with a difficult time meeting women and genuinely falling in love. After easily finding a dream woman on a dating website he found it easier to find someone else once their relationship ended. Hence, online dating made it easier for him (and possibly other users) to change views on a long or lifetime monogamous relationship.
This article presents the deceptions of online dating through the users profiles through self-presentation, emotions and trustworthiness.
The continued advancement of information and communication technologies has virtualized interpersonal communication process in various ways. Initial definitions of Interpersonal Communication indicated that the interaction/s needs to be face-to-face, but now with technological innovations the concept is getting disputed. In terms of dating (within my age group), prevalent usage of dating websites, and phone apps such as Tinder, OkCupid, and Match are normal and standard. In an article published in The Atlantic it stated, “American adults ages 18 to 24 used online-dating sites and apps at an average rate for all American adults—about 10 percent. Since then, that rate has almost tripled. College-aged and post-college-aged Americans are now the most likely demographic to turn to the technology” (Robinson Meyer, The Atlantic.com). The interactions and behaviors of dating using
The practice of online dating has become an increasingly popular and acceptable method of dating in modern society and looking at this social behavior from the perspective of a functionalist and a symbolic interactionist would involve very different focuses.
People in society today can find potential sex partners in a heartbeat. In Nancy Jo Sales’ article “Tinder and the Dawn of the ‘Dating Apocalypse,’” she talks about how powerful the Internet and dating applications can be in helping one find potential partners. Jo Sales argues that dating applications and the Internet are not generally used for dating, but they are used for finding instant sex partners that lead to one-night stands. Short-term relationships are increasing due to the Internet and applications and will continue to increase in the future. Scholars have argued that sexual activity has tremendously increased, moving from traditional dating to a new style of dating called hookups. Also, research indicates numerous examples
Would you be comfortable handing out nude pictures of yourself to strangers on a busy street? Or would you be okay with knowing that hundreds of individuals in your area have seen you at your most vulnerable state? This is an issue that I have become all too familiar with in today’s society, especially in the gay community. In the gay community, the “hook-up” culture has become the norm of relationships and is now something the world identifies the LGBT community with. This issue has been thrust upon and adopted by the LGBT community through history and is now sustained and made even more accessible through the use of mobile apps. The real question is how did we as a society and a community let this issue get this accepted, and what are we going to do to bring meaningful relationships to the forefront?

Dating nowadays has evolved into something similar to a math equation. Technology has changed society and culture so much in the 21st century that something which did not seem normal probably 30 years ago seems mundane now: meeting people via computer. In order to find the most compatible person, suddenly people are not able to find “the one” and need the help of a computer to tell them who their personality matches with, causing many people to not develop proper social skills along with confidence. People have different relationship goals which they wish to achieve, be it through either traditional or online dating. Although traditional and online dating have many similarities, at the same time they are very different when it comes to the
have continued to show that more than one third of the relationships in the U.S. are started online and are very successful. (Jayson, USA TODAY, 2013) However, statistics also prove that more lying occurs during the beginning phases of online dating, than the old fashioned way of meeting face to face. By being online, you can be whoever you want to be and create an ideal person for your potential match. This is a form of lies of omission, which means that some people just prefer to tell indirect lies versus telling the truth.

Based on a research of Online Dating & Relationships, Smith and Duggan stated that the ways of finding partners have been changed with the times. In the past, people used matchmaking, arranged marriages and printed personal ads. With the rapid technology advancement, there are alternative methods - online dating sites and smart phone dating apps. To compare with the people who date traditionally, people who date online are active to choose their dream man or woman by browsing the others profiles (9).
Dating use to be simple. Two people get to know each other, go on a few dates, and then one day they decide to be boyfriend and girlfriend. However, this doesn't seem to be the case anymore. The term “Dating” is getting used less every day. Dating is a thing of the past because it takes a longer process for two people to determine if they are ready to commit, the term “talking” has replaced the word dating, and because people don't stay fully committed to one person anymore.
