Tim Burton Style Analysis (Unit 2, EA 2)
What do you imagine when you hear the word “weirdo”? Most people would picture someone awkward or even a misfit, but what about a film director, artist, producer, animator or writer? Timothy Walter Burton, commonly known as Tim Burton, is all of those things and more. While growing up in the suburbs of Burbank, California, Tim Burton went from being an outcast to a very famous and equally talented director. Some of his masterpieces include Batman, Beetlejuice, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Edward Scissorhands, and numerous others.
In order for Burton, or any other director for that matter, to create such masterpieces they have to make a series of decisions involving a wide variety of cinematic techniques.

This film captures his style differently but that does not reduce the quality of it. The more obvious cinematic techniques used in this film are sound and lighting. Tim Burton is a major fan of Edgar Allen Poe so as a result of Poe's influence, the main character, Vincent Malloy, fantasizes about acting out Poe’s gothic horror stories. Throughout the film, plenty of low key lighting is evident when we see into Vincent’s fantasies. In order to accentuate the gruesomeness, Burton selectively uses low key lighting in all of these scenes. All the while, a famous actor, Vincent Price, is narrating the story in a rhyming script. It is a great use of non-diegetic sound and paired with eery music. The rhyming gives the film a childlike innocence, although, most would agree that the film was too horrendous and disturbing for children. A person does not usually pay attention to cinematic techniques used in a film because one does not think of the details in the movie. These details are a key part in creating the mood and tone. Tim Burton uses similar techniques in his movies to create a suspenseful mood. Many instances of low key lighting were used to create a suspenseful mood. Along with low key lighting, low and high camera angles were used to show authority and importance. Lastly, non-diegetic sound was used to create a dramatic effect while still making the mood suspenseful.
Edward Scissorhands, written by Tim Burton, tells the tale of a young man who is lovable, childlike and sensitive, bewildered by the humanity around him, yet is terrifying- someone who has scissors, the deadly weaponry, for hands. Many viewers may read this film as a “Tim Burton” type of fairytale which includes both an alternative aspect and romance. However, through the presentation of mise-en-scene in this film, Burton drives in a much more serious subject of social criticism by establishing two different understandings of life in the movie.
