Auteur is a French word for a director who not only has complete control over all elements of a film but also has so much creative influences that they would be considered as the film’s author.Tim Burton is considered as an auteur and so is Clint Eastwood,however they do not share the same styles.Tim Burton utilises gothic characters that are often outcasts whereas Clint Eastwood portrays characters with a tragic life that often has a tragic ending.Clint Eastwood usually acts in his own films,on the other hand Tim Burton uses Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter in most of his films.They both have one thing in common,a parent figure or a relationship between an older and younger generation.In short,Tim Burton and Clint Eastwood differ from …show more content…
each other by many means but they still have something in common despite all the differences.
Essentially,Tim Burton always include a gothic character which is also play as an outsider to his films whereas Clint Eastwood would include a character with a tragic life and also adding a tragic ending to his film as well.In Edward Scissorhands,the main character Edward can’t touch anything because he has scissors instead of hands which leaves him as an outsider as well.Another great example would be in Batman Returns where Batman or Bruce Wayne was forced to keep his identity and life a secret.On the other hand,Clint Eastwood’s featured films like Million Dollar Baby which has a character,Maggie who not only grew up with poor education and little weath but also suffered a critical injury that paralyzes most of her body.Tim Burton’s gothic outcast characters and Clint Eastwood’s characters with their dire life and tragic endings are the main difference between these autuers,being that their style is completely different. Furthermore,Tim Burton loves to utilise the same actors and actresses like Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter which differs from Clint Eastwood as he often acts in his own films instead.For instance in Dark Shadows,Johnny Depp played as the main character Barnabas Collins and Helena Bonham Carter played as Dr. Julia Hoffman.Unlike Tim Burton,Clint Eastwood acts in most of his own film as an old American man indicating a symbol of his own life;getting older and feeling lonely.He played as Frankie Dunn in Million Dollar Baby,Will Munny in Unforgiven and many more,but most of the characters he portrayed are old American mens.Tim Burton constantly uses the same actors and actresses whereas Clint Eastwood plays almost the same roles in his own films,they differ from each other by all means but they still have common characteristics.
Additionally,Tim Burton and Clint Eastwood shares a common characteristic being that they both take advantage of having a kind parent figure or a father like figure in their films.Such as in Burton’s Edward Scissorhands,Peg and Bill and the Inventor are the typical impossibly kind parent figures in the film.Another great example would be Elizabeth Collins in Dark Shadows where she is the mother of the Collins family.Just as Tim Burton’s films are having parent figures so does Clint Eastwood’s.For instance,in Million Dollar Baby;Frankie is a father like figure to Maggie and also within Gran Torino there is a relationship between Walt and Thao where Walt is a father like figure.Despite all the differences between these two auteurs,they still have something in common being that they both utilises parent figures in their films. Finally,Tim Burton and Clint Eastwood may differ from each other by having completely different styles but they still have something in common which ultimately leads to their success.Tim Burton’s gothic outcast characters,recurring actors and actresses surely differs from Clint Eastwood’s tragic characters and being both the director and actor of his own films.While they both share a common characteristic being that they both included parent figures or father like figures in their featured films.Despite all the differences and similarities,they are both auteurs who won many awards including Oscars through their constant success.
Tim Burton: Exuberant, unique, witty, with his movies bring smiles to faces all around, young and old. The talents this man has are numerous; the films directed flawlessly.
“Live people ignore the strange and unusual. I myself, am strange and unusual”, this is just one of many of the quotes from Tim Burton. He calls himself strange and unusual, and it shows: in the movies he has directed. In both Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Edward Scissorhands, Tim Burton uses characters with tragic beginnings and judgmental antagonists to convey that individuality is preferable to conformity.
What makes a producer’s style unique? How does a producer’s style distinguish itself from others’ styles? In Tim Burton’s imaginative productions, Alice in Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, one is able to identify Burton’s distinct style when peeling back the layers of his films. Summarizing these films, in Alice in Wonderland, a young woman is transported to the mystical wonderland, where she must defeat the forces of evil along with a journey of self-discovery. Next, in Edward Scissorhands, an unfinished project is discovered and integrated into the everyday lives of people in a nearby suburban town. The film shows how Edward, an unfinished man, tries to live an ordinary life and make deal with his attraction towards Kim. Finally, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a story of a boy from an impoverished family who has come upon the chance to visit Mr. Wonka’s candy factory. In these three films, Burton’s cinematic style can be depicted through his frequent use of front and back lighting and low angles to show the opposing forces between good a...
...eflects the director’s personal creative vision, as if they were the primary ‘auteur’ – which is the French word for author. As far as the law goes, any film that is produced is treated as a work of art, and the auteur, as the creator of the film, is the original copyright holder. This theory has influenced film criticism since the early 1950’s, when it was originally advocated for by the film director and critic, Francois Truffaut, through a certain type of film analysis. Auteur theory itself was developed a few years later in the US through the writings of The Village Voice critic, Andrew Sarris.
A noticeable difference in the way movies have changed over the years is evident when comparing and contrasting two films of different eras which belong to the same genre and contain the same subject matter. Two vampire movies, Dracula and Bram Stoker's Dracula, present an interesting example of this type of study.
... his work with famous actors and actresses, and his classical style of camera usage are reasons that he is an auteur. Wilder takes ownership of his works and each one of his films reflects off of each other in some way. An auteur is an “author” of their work and they have certain characteristics that help to define that it is their work. Wilder enjoys mixing cynicism and comedy in not only his characters but also through the theme of the movie. Wilder’s talent with being able to work with famous yet difficult actors and actresses is another reason to call him an auteur. He was able to create unique characters that no other film had. Lastly, his classical style of moving the camera during production helps to set him apart from other directors. In conclusion, Billy Wilder is a very influential director who made his mark on cinema and deserves to be called an auteur.
Tim Burton is known for his stop motion animated films. In most of these stop motion films he uses many of the same techniques to produce his conflicts and resolutions. In two of his films, The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride, they each have a different plot, but they share a common theme of death and another world. There are many similarities in The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride including the use of dark and bright colors, the way music is used, using the dead and the living to thicken the plot, and supporting characters to show the main character’s proper course of action. The differences between the movies include the celebrations that occur, the means of transportation between two worlds, and how the dead and
Over the years people have given new out looks on the original vampire, Dracula. He was a tall non-attractive looking man who would never come out during the day. Hollywood however has made new vampire stories such as Twilight, True Blood, and The Vampire Diaries/The Originals that have new ideas of a vampire. These novels/books all have differences, but some still have key characteristics of the original vampire.

The legend of the vampire has emerged countless times within human imagination over the past few centuries. The first available representation of the mythical creature in prose fiction can be found in John Polidori’s “The Vampyre” (1810). It was not until eight decades later that Bram Stoker popularized the existence of this figure with the publication of “Dracula” in 1897. The folklore of the vampire has come a long way since and can be found in today’s popular media more frequently than ever before. However, with due course of time, the representation of the creature has taken alternate routes and today’s vampires are noticeable different – socially and physically – from their predecessors. One effective path to trace this transformation is to compare arguably modern day’s most famous representation of the vampire, Stephanie Meyer’s “Twilight” with “Dracula”, the foundation from which a large number of modern works draw inspiration. Examining this comparison closely, one finds that a new socially acceptable, sexually abstinent and desirable creature is fast replacing the fearsome and sexually voracious monster, as depicted in early tales of the vampire.
Dracula, the most famous vampire of all time, which readers were first introduced to by Irish author Bram Stoker in 1897 with his novel Dracula, which tells the story of the mysterious person named Count Dracula (Stoker). The book is an outstanding masterpiece of work, which is why it has been a prototype for various movie releases over the decades. Whenever a film director decides to make a movie on behalf of a novel the hope is that the characters concur from the novel to the movie, which leads to the exploration of the resemblances and modifications between the characters in Dracula the novel by Bram Stoker and Bram Stoker’s Dracula 1992 movie directed by Francis Ford Coppola.
From Transylvania to Hollywood, vampires have transformed from unfamiliar, mysterious personalities to one of the most dominant monsters in the horror genre today. Vampires are one of the oldest and most noted creatures in mythology, with many variations of them around the world. Although the most famous version is Bram Stoker’s Dracula, many variants have come before and after telling of the same legend with their own added ideas and modifications to relate to their cultures. Today, there is a multitude of literary and film works that convey and resurface peoples’ fear of vampires. As gothic works like Dracula, by Bram Stoker and Scooby-Doo! and the Legend of the Vampire directed by Scott Jeralds share certain traits reflective of the genre;
In Twilight, Edward Cullen presents the question; “ But what if I’m not the hero? What if I’m the bad guy?” The role of vampires is very controversial. Back in the day they were evil, soulless monsters and people genuinely feared them. However, in the present day it seems that we have grown to love them and even hope to one day be them. There are a plethora of vampire stories and many of them have become immense hits. With so many vampire stories, it is not uncommon that readers are able to identify a vast amount of similarities. Although similar in aspects, there are still many differences between the classic and modern day vampires. Two highly popular stories, in which we can easily identify similarities and differences, are Bram Stoker’s Dracula and Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight.
Dracula, the 1931 film directed by Tod Browning is loosely based upon the novel of the same name. Therefore both share similar characteristics but are distinct. The differences between the novel and film occur due to the cinematic choices made as well as the fact that the film is based off of not only the novel Dracula but also the 1924 play Dracula. One major decision made by Browning was to alter the role of Johnathan Harker. In the novel Johnathan is the solicitor who meets with Dracula in Transylvania and narrowly escapes the “veritable prison” and is a changed man due to his experiences there (25). On the other hand, in the film Johnathan never visits Transylvania. Renfield is the one who does so instead. That provides Renfield with a
Director Tim Burton has directed many films. He started out working at Disney, but shortly after he decided to make his own films. He split away from Disney because they wouldn’t let him add the scariness and darkness he has in his films. After he left he created many great films and also developed his own style. He uses many cinematic techniques in his films for example he uses close-up camera angles on symbolic items, he uses music to show foreshadowing, and he uses lighting and color to show mood
