An English professor of many years at the University of Michigan-Flint, Thomas C. Foster has delivered an impressive book: How to Read Literature like a Professor. This book is an invaluable tool for readers at any level that can be used to more easily identify and interpret the many symbols woven into books, short stories, poems, and other writings. In the book, Foster not only explains what common occurrences, such as rain or illness, can mean symbolically, but also gives numerous examples from the works of popular authors. While a quick glance at the title may not give the impression that the reading will be particularly enjoyable, a book cannot be judged by its cover. As a book that is written to help readers delve into the incredible
world of literature, it does its job wonderfully. Each chapter of the book is devoted either to a source from which many authors take inspiration – the Bible, Greek myths, Shakespearean plays, etc. – or to symbols and archetypes that reappear time and time again throughout literature. Of the former category, my favorite chapter is about the Bible and how many authors use it in their own writing. It amazes me how adding a quote from the Bible can add an entirely new layer to a scene or character. For example, Beloved, by Toni Morrison, has a scene where four men riding on horses go to the house of an escaped slave, Sethe, who is hiding there with her small children (Foster 43). In an attempt to protect her children from becoming slaves, she tries to kill them. While this may seem like insanity, it becomes somewhat more understandable when seen through the lens of the Bible. The Four Horsemen are riding up to her house, and they are bringing with them the Apocalypse. This extra dimension is something that I would not have thought about before reading the book, but now, I cannot stop looking for it. As previously stated, reading the title does not inspire confidence in a casual reader (such as me) that the book will be very comical. However, after reading a few pages into the book, I am happily surprised to find that the author is inserting humor into his explanations quite consistently. The first few words of his introduction are, “Mr. Lindner? That milquetoast?” (Foster xxiii). Simply reading such an uncommon and silly word as “milquetoast” made me smile a little. Also, his conversations with an imaginary student – likely modeled after conversations he has with his students at the university – make his explanations much more interesting and much more amusing. Another factor that makes the reading more enjoyable is that his vocabulary is not particularly over-the-top and does not require a dictionary to understand (with the exception of the occasional “milquetoast”). Furthermore, Foster is always bringing up irony. One of Foster’s final chapters is all about it, in fact. The essence of irony is taking something that is expected, and turning it on its head. Foster takes this and illustrates it with a story of a seat belt billboard falling on top of someone who just survived a car crash (255). Foster’s humor shows throughout the book in numerous ways, and the book is exponentially more enjoyable because of it. How to Read Literature like a Professor is an absolutely remarkable book that should be read by any reader that would like to gain a better understanding of the countless symbols in literature that are hidden just beneath the surface. Foster is able to find a perfect balance between informing and entertaining that very few authors can. This book is a clear example of the old saying about books and their covers.

A careful analysis of selected passages of two books: Zora Neale Hurston's Their Eyes Were Watching God and Francis Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby, will show that symbolical language can reveal even more insight. In a country like the United States of America, with a history of every individual having an equal opportunity to reach their dreams, it becomes harder and harder to grasp the reality that equal opportunity is diminishing as the years go on. The book Our Kids by Robert Putnam illustrates this reality and compares life during the 1950’s and today’s society and how it has gradually gotten to a point of inequality. In particular, he goes into two touching stories, one that shows the changes in the communities we live in and another that illustrates the change of family structure. In the end he shows how both stories contribute to the American dream slipping away from our hands.
Symbolism is commonly used by authors that make short stories. Guin is a prime example of how much symbolism is used in short stories such as “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” and “Sur.” In both of these stories Guin uses symbolism to show hidden meanings and ideas. In “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” there is a perfect Utopian city, yet in this perfect city there is a child locked in a broom closet and it is never let out. A few people leave the city when they find out about the child, but most people stay. Furthermore, in “Sur” there is a group of girls that travel to the South Pole and reach it before anyone else, yet they leave no sign or marker at the South Pole. Guin’s stories are very farfetched and use many symbols. Both “Sur” and “The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas” have many symbols such as colors, characters, objects, and weather. The four types of symbols that Guin uses help the readers understand the themes in her short stories. Although her stories are farfetched, they need symbolism in them or the reader would not understand the theme; therefore the symbols make Guin’s stories much more enjoyable.
In a well-written short story, different literary elements and terms are incorporated into the story by the author. Ernest Hemingway frequently uses various literary elements in his writing to entice the reader and enhance each piece that he writes. In Hills Like White Elephants, Hemingway uses symbols to teach the reader certain things that one may encounter during daily life. Symbolism may be defined as relating to, using, or proceeding by means of symbols (Princeton). The use of symbols in Hills Like White Elephants is utterly important to the plot line and to the fundamental meaning of the story. Through this use of symbolism, the reader can begin to reveal the hidden themes in this short story.
Professor Faber is second mentor Montag has ever had. He teaches Montag about books, and how they are important in people’s lives. Faber calls Montag names because of his lack of common sense. Montag has recently become interested in reading and he is looking toward Faber for more information. Faber is an interesting man. He wants everyone to see how society really is, but he says that he is a coward who would not speak out against book burning when they still could have stopped it.
A symbol is an object, action, or event that represents something or that creates a range of associations beyond itself. In literary works a symbol can express an idea, clarify meaning, or enlarge literal meaning. Select a novel or play and, focusing on one symbol, write an essay analyzing how that symbol functions in the work and what it reveals about the characters or themes of the work as a whole.
