All that matters is the things you carry on in life. Whether it is verbal, physical, or even emotional. The things you carry are the things you’ll look back on. Many things can be cherish as a memory or a tragedy. But it should never define what we are. One of my favorite quotes is ‘But the thing about remembering is that you don’t forget” this quote reminds me of all the things I will remember through my life, the things I’ve went through, and the things I’ll never forget. There are many things I’ve carried through my life are the sports such as a basketball, and a volleyball. The second thing I’ve carried is the bible verse “Do not be afraid I am with you” Isaiah 43:5. The last and most important thing that I carry is the death of my grandpa. …show more content…
Whenever I was around 7 years old I read the bible and I was always terrified of things because I knew there was many things to be afraid of in the world. I still read the verse every night to remind myself that God is with me every single day. It also reminds me that every single day I don’t need to be afraid because God knows what will happen next in my life. It’s a postive thing to carry with me because it’s going to lead me into something better in life and one day I’ll be very happy. The story behind it is I’ve had many tragedies during my life such as whenever my dad was in an accident at work here in Leoti. He had to be flown to Denver fast because a iron thing had fell on top of him and it nearly almost killed him. If the iron would have hit his left side pretty good then he wouldn’t have been here with me at all. I continued to read that verse to myself every night because God has a plan for my dad to be here present with me. He knew exactly what he was doing. I will always carry this bible verse with me forever because it actually save me and my dad. It lead me to become a stronger
The things they carried, by Tim O'Brien. "Oh man, you fuckin' trashed the fucker. You scrambled his sorry self, look at that, you did, you laid him out like fuckin' Shredded Wheat." I chose to start off my essay with this particular extract from the book because I think that it very much represents the story in itself. Azar said this, after Tim (supposedly) killed a Vietnamese soldier with a hand grenade. It shows that in times of war, how callous men can become. However, callousness varies, whether they choose to be apathetic, like Tim shows us after his grenade episode.
People carry things with them all the time on a daily basis. They might be physical, emotional or spiritual things. Some people could carry a traumatic past while others simply carry a bag of groceries into their house. The things one carries defines them as a person and brings out their qualities as well as their defects. Some people might think of those things as burdens while others see them as a way out of reality or as something to push them forward, something to believe in.
This estimate does not surprise me at all because when I think about all the work that we have to do I remember all the textbooks that we have to carry around. In addition sometimes I come home with my back aching, but that’s usually only when I carry my USHAP notebook with me as well
In the novel The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien the author tells about his experiences in the Vietnam war by telling various war stories. The quote, "It has been said of war that it is a world where the past has a strong grip on the present, where machines seemed sometimes to have more will power than me, where nice boys (girls) were attracted to them, where bodies ruptured and burned and stand, where the evil thing trying to kill you could look disconnecting human and where except in your imagination it was impossible to be heroic." relates to each of his stories.
Vietnam War a war that took many lives. A war that change the people, the nation and our views. In “The Things They Carried” by Tim O'Brien, symbolism is the key into getting the reader understand life behind the line. Tim O'Brien writing give the readers the vivid image through the fact the war has a deeper meaning than one can believe. In this story we see how everyday life through symbols are used in literature writing.
Symbolism in stories is dependent on how the author writes, the title, and the characters. Titles in literature are very important to the symbolism of a story an example of this is Tim O’Brien’s “The Things They Carried”. As the story goes on it shows not only the literal meaning of what they carried but also symbolically the burdens that they had mentally.
The woman that Cross is in love with is named Martha. She's barely a junior from Mount Sebastian College in New Jersey. Although he is madly in love with her, Martha doesn't return the feelings back for him. This one-sided love causes him to ponder and lose focus of what is really important, keeping himself and his troops alive and well. As he is lying in his foxhole, he looks at pictures of Martha; he can't help to feel, "More than anything, he wanted Martha to love him as he loved her " As shown, he just wants to be with her and to share a love with her. Over and over again, he would think about her; sometimes in foxholes, sometimes while marching, even at times of danger. This lack of focus on the real dilemma, their situation in the war, will be a costly one.
These events have strengthened me mentally, spiritually, and educationally. Regardless of what occurs in life, at work or in school, I have the ability to overcome the obstacles and the strength of mind, a compassionate heart and the knowledge to succeed in any task I undertake.
Like an executive summary, many novels use the first chapter to introduce the major themes and contents of the work. An example of this technique is Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried. In it, O'Brien uses the first chapter, "The Things They Carried," to introduce the characters and the tangible and intangible items they took with them and sometimes burdened over. He uses these possessions to thoroughly define the man carrying it. To these men, even in a war, it is not the machine guns and claymore mines that they prize to maintain their survival but items like pictures and pantyhose that help them remain sane and alive. Each man had his own needs and each man carried his own talisman, all in an effort to remain in the real world. These items eventually became the person carrying it. In this novel, O'Brien's successful portrayal of his war experiences was done by the use of distinguishing key characters and the things they carried to help identify the majorthemes of strength, weakness and confusion.
A lot of people change because of some tragic event or some mishappening in their life. They become more responsible, feel guilty and regret their behavior in the past. A friend of mine started taking care of his business after his father's death and stopped being an irresponsible jerk. He feels guilty about not having a good relation with his father. Whereas, the story "the things they carried" is about the fantasies, fears and desires and dreams of the soldiers. For instance, Ted lavender was afraid of death. Jimmy cross dreams about the girl Martha and lost his consciousness sometimes while marching and sitting. He also had some wild fantasies about her. He is a careless officer who doesn't pay any attention, no matter how hard he tries. He felt guilty about the death of his coworker Ted lavender. Ted died of a sniper shot in his head and that was the day irresponsible, daydreamer and careless jimmy changed into more responsible man focusing on war.
