Have you ever marveled at the powerful stories a poem can tell with just words? I will be analyzing the similarities and differences in figurative language and the elements of Chinese poetry in the Chinese poems “I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” and “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves.”
“I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” and “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves” share many similarities. For example, both poems include refrains, a typical element of Chinese poetry in which word phrases are repeated at regular intervals. The refrain, “Chung Tzu I dearly love,” from “I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” and the refrain, “He whom I love,” from “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves” both emphasize the emotions each speaker feel for her beloved. In addition, the poems share the Chinese poetic
form of being a song as both poems were originally set to music and have strong, regular rhythms. On the other hand, the two poems contain many differences. For instance, each poem’s tone, or the speaker’s attitude toward her subject, varies greatly.”I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” has a tentative tone that expresses fear as is revealed in the line, “Indeed I am afraid.” “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves” has a tone of romantic yearning that ultimately turns into a celebratory tone. This can be understood from the line, “Down stream I followed him, and away in mid-water there on the shoals is he!” Additionally, only one poem, “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves,” uses imagery which is figurative language that uses words or phrases to appeal to the senses. “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves” uses phrases such as, “Very fresh are the rush leaves; The white dew still falls,” to appeal to the reader’s sense of sight. “I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” does not use imagery. In conclusion, the poems “I Beg of You, Chung Tzu” and “Thick Grow the Rush Leaves” share many similarities and differences as well as having some differences. Regardless, each poem’s simple words will continue to tell the same powerful stories for years to come
Both authors use figurative language to help develop sensory details. In the poem It states, “And I sunned it with my smiles, And with soft deceitful wiles.” As the author explains how the character is feeling, the reader can create a specific image in there head based on the details that is given throughout the poem. Specifically this piece of evidence shows the narrator growing more angry and having more rage. In the short story ” it states, “We are below the river's bed. The drops of moisture trickle among bones.” From this piece of text evidence the reader can sense the cold dark emotion that is trying to be formed. Also this excerpt shows the conflict that is about to become and the revenge that is about to take place. By the story and the poem using sensory details, they both share many comparisons.
These poems have quite a few similarities, as well as their differences. Mariam Waddington’s, “Thou Didst Say Me,” displays love being overly joyous but also heart-breaking and despondent. On the other hand Alfred Tennyson’s, “Now Sleeps the Crimson Petal,” depicts a sugary love story all calm and beautiful. Both offered their end of the bargain: conflicting sentiments toward love relations to the table and ultimately delivering a unique testimony about the subject of, love. And as always love may have its golden tragedies but one always has a hold of their own feelings of love.
Both poems represent the despairs and failures of the love they hone for their beloved, with brings a touch of sadness to the poems. From this the reader can feel almost sympathetic to the unrequited lovers, and gain an understanding of the perils and repercussions of love.
Figurative Language in used throughout poems so the reader can develop a further understanding of the text. In “The Journey” the author uses rhythm and metaphors throughout the poem. “...as you left their voices behind, the stars began to burn through the sheets of the clouds..”(25-27). The author compares the star burning to finding your voice. Rhythm also develops the theme of the poem because throughout the story rhythm is presented as happy showing growing up and changing for the better is necessary and cheerful. In “The Laughing Heart” the author uses imagery and metaphors to develop the theme throughout the book. “There is a light somewhere. It may not be much light but it beats the darkness”(5-7). Literature shows us the changes of our society from time to time. It also gives us an idea about people, culture, politics, gender traditions, as well as an overall view of previous civilizations. As a part of literature, poetry introduces us to different cultures with different perspectives. Ancient Egypt and ancient China may differ in terms of culture, politics, economic stability, tradition, or even in religious belief. However, in poetry, especially in love lyrics both Egyptian and Chinese poems portray common area of describing women, social attitudes toward love, sexuality and the existence of romance or selfishness in relationships. . If we look at the Egyptian poem “My god, my Lotus” and the Chinese poem “Fishhawk”, we will see both poems have similarities in describing relationships. Also, they have the similarity of imagining the lovers and their expression of love toward each other. However, both poems have some significant differences in terms of representing female sexuality, gender disparity and the display of love.
In today’s modern view, poetry has become more than just paragraphs that rhyme at the end of each sentence. If the reader has an open mind and the ability to read in between the lines, they discover more than they have bargained for. Some poems might have stories of suffering or abuse, while others contain happy times and great joy. Regardless of what the poems contains, all poems display an expression. That very moment when the writer begins his mental journey with that pen and paper is where all feelings are let out. As poetry is continues to be written, the reader begins to see patterns within each poem. On the other hand, poems have nothing at all in common with one another. A good example of this is in two poems by a famous writer by the name of Langston Hughes. A well-known writer that still gets credit today for pomes like “ Theme for English B” and “Let American be American Again.”
These poems are not as complex when compared to other poems, and with that being said they do not take an abundance of inference to determine the theme of the poem. Concrete poetry presents its readers with a unique and often confounding situation. In addition to using language or parts of language in non-traditional ways, concrete poetry also uses elements that are more commonly associated with visual art. However, concrete poetry is not visual art. It is still concerned, primarily, with the use of language, generally to communicate some meaning to the reader in a way that is undeniably linguistic in nature. Concrete poetry is therefore an especially unique genre that draws upon and incorporates many different concepts from a variety of disciplines in order to fill in the gaps left when traditional grammar and syntax are eschewed.
Both forms of these poems, history and storytelling have a certain degree of fluidity to help determine the meaning from the speaker to the reader. The compositions of these poems show that the poets, Owen and Brooks, did not write for an audience, but rather for an absent reader, by using more imagery and sound elements. But, thanks to the introduction of electronic media, the seven poetic elements are now easier to be “seen” and heard. This allows for the reader or listener to reach the full potential of the poem. Through listening the speaker’s tone, witnessing the time period, hearing the diction, speech and sound elements, the true meaning of the poem is painted for the audience.
