Attitudes Towards Love in Pre-1900 and 1990's Poetry
“The Despairing Lover” written by William Walsh was written pre 1900
whilst the second poem “I Wouldn’t Thank you for a Valentine” by Liz
Lockhead was written in the 1990’s. These poems are almost a century
apart. Attitude towards love changes over time and these poems
represent this. I Wouldn’t Thank you for a Valentine is about how
people think about Valentine’s Day in the 1990’s, while The Despairing
Lover is showing what people think and how important they see love in
the 1990’s.
In “The Despairing Lover” William Walsh sets out the poem like a story
with a beginning a middle and an end. This narrative structure of the
poem gives the poem three clear stages this making the poem clearer to
the reader and enables the poets written words to portray his ideas
with the poem. In the first stanza William Walsh is seen to be in
‘anguish’ over his loss of his lover. However in the second stanza his
mood swings to being just unhappy to suicidal, “it’s torment
projecting and sadly reflecting’. This also shows how the poet William
Walsh’s mind is working. In the third stanza, the poet realizes he
might get ‘a new love.’ William Walsh realises his loss and believes
he can find someone else. The words used in the despairing lover shows
Walsh emotions, for example the use of the word “anguish” instead of
angry is used because it is more dramatic. After reading the first two
stanza’s the reader is almost positive that the poet is going to
commit suicide and is just leading up to a big climax where he jumps.
However there is an unexpected twist where the poet just calms down

repetition. Another comparison between the two poems is we are both
hearing the viewpoint from the poet not from anybody else. Both the
poems also have a story behind them. I wouldn’t thank you for a
valentine has a hidden story and that is about something bad happening
to her on valentines day. While the despairing lover story is about
the poet coping with the break up from his lover. On the other hand
their are also many differences between the two poems. There structure
is different while the despairing lover is set out like a story with a
begging a middle and an end. I wouldn’t thank you for a valentine
structure is set out like a list. Another difference is that the
despairing lover has rhyming couplets while the second poem doesn’t. A
final difference between the two poems is the both have different
opinions on love and what love is like.
In all poems the theme of Disappointment in love is seen throughout. Duffy focuses on the pain, despair and acrimony that love can bring, whereas Larkin focuses on the dissatisfaction before, during, and after a romantic relationship. Both Duffy and Larkin differ in tone. Duffy takes a more aggressive and dark stance to portray what love can do to a person after a disappointing love life. Duffy also uses this sinister and aggressive stance to try and convey sympathy for the persona from the audience in ‘Never Go Back’ and ‘Havisham’ Whereas Larkin conveys his discontent in love through his nonchalant and dismissive tone, but still concealing the pain that has been brought by love in ‘Wild Oats’ and ‘Talking in bed’.
“Love Poem With Toast” by Miller Williams introduces the effect our desires have in our daily lives in order to “move, as we call it, forward” (11). Miller Williams also conveys this message accompanied with a darker meaning; though these desires make up a large part of our lives, in the end none of it will matter because we leave the world the same way we enter it, with nothing. Despite this message being carried out, it is still a love poem at the surface, but it is not about a person confessing their love, rather pretending to love, and continuing to live with this self-conflict about choosing to be in a frigid relationship over not being in one at all. It is interesting how Miller rhythmically categorizes his message throughout the poem;
Throughout time, love has been a steady theme in music, literature, and film. Love is perhaps one of the most obvious emotions to portray and it can often be described as be sensual, sexual, spiritual or mystic, and divine. The tradition of courtly love began in the twelfth- century with the traveling songs of the performing troubadours and trouvères throughout Europe. Their songs of love were the source of all Western vernacular poetry and through the evolution of time developed into the popular chanson of the fifteenth and sixteenth- centuries. Perhaps the most common themes in Burgundian, Parisian and international chansons is that of fine amour or refined love. Due to the influence of culture and the progression of time, the subject matter and compositional style of the chanson changed as it moved through Burgundy, Paris and eventually spread internationally.

Both, the poem “Reluctance” by Robert Frost and “Time Does Not Bring Relief” by Edna St. Vincent Millay, revolved around the theme of lost love. Each poet used a similar array of poetic devices to express this theme. Visual imagery was one of the illustrative poetic devices used in the compositions. Another poetic device incorporated by both poets in order to convey the mood of the poems was personification. And by the same token, metaphors were also used to help express the gist of both poems. Ergo, similar poetic devices were used in both poems to communicate the theme of grieving the loss of a loved one.

In order to answer this question this essay will focus on two tales from Chaucer's Canterbury Tales: the Knight's Tales and the Franklin's Tales. It will show that medieval romance can be used as a vehicle to promote chivalric behaviour as well as exploring a range of philosophical, political, and literary question.
The poem “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock” by T. S Eliot is a wonderful piece of modernist writing filled with dramatic monologue where the rhyming scheme of this poem is not random, however a bit irregular coupled with some free verse style. This poem speaks out about loneliness and isolation. It begins with the readers not knowing if the Prufrock is taking along a companion on his journey or is he taking along his readers, to support this claim, “Let us go then, you and I.” (Eliot 368)
The poem “The Lover Not Taken” share an identical structure with “The Road Not Taken,” with an extra stanza containing two lines where Farley throws in the punch line to make a point. Both the poems develop a unique pattern of rhyming, where the first, third and fourth line rhyme; also, second and the fifth line end with rhyming words. Despite the use of similar words such as “stood” (2) and “sigh” (16), Farley manages to create an unrestrained and dynamic lead character, while Frost portrays a slow pace. The ironic use of rhyme and meter, or the lack thereof, is one of the devices Larkin uses to emphasize his need to break out of industrial society. The typical rhyme scheme is not followed, but instead an ironic rhyme scheme is used in the sonnet in the form of abab cdcd efg efg. Larkin writes this poem as a sonnet but at the same time diverges from what a typical sonnet is supposed to be. He is commenting on society’s inclination to form restrictions on those within it. By writing out of the accepted form of a sonnet, his writing becomes more natural because of a lack of constraints due to following certain rules and fitting a certain form. There is also a standard structure in this poem, with the second and last line of each stanza shorter than the other two. It uses half-rhyme, creating an "a, b, a, b" rhyme scheme which adds speed to the entire poem. This, in turn, re-emphasises the fact that time is ticking away and we need to make the best out of our youth and regret not in the future. I find this second poem easier to grasp, mainly due to the references and comparisons to tangible things. I guess the subject matter also appeals more to me, as the subject matter in "Song" gives me an impression that from the physical love he is looking for in the girl, he is not serious about her. As for "To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time", it is purer, warning readers to be more careful in what one does with his youth.
On a literal level, this poem is bashing true love. This is made apparent throughout the poem. The speaker states things like “listen to them laughing-it’s an insult” and “it’s obviously a plot behind the human race’s back”. It is apparent that the speaker doesn’t have a positive opinion about true love. They even so far as to claim that it an outrage to justice and that it “disrupts our painstakingly erected principles”. This poem is about how true love is just illusion; especially to those people that never find it.
