In the novel, Holes, by Louis Sachar, two of the familiar themes were represented which were teamwork and leadership. The two themes were used by Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni. Teamwork and leadership are two essential points that summarize the novel. Teamwork is one theme that was used in the novel by Stanley Yelnats and Hector Zeroni. Stanley and Zero were on a quest to find water on the big thump, and while they were there, they thought of finding the whole treasure that goes with the tube that Stanley found and gave to X-Ray. The following examples of teamwork show how they accomplished their goal. An example is when Stanley helped Zero reduce his pain or weakness by giving him something to concentrate on. An example is when Stanley led Zero and himself to the top of the mountain safely. For instance, on page 164, it states, “Stanley saw a rut, about a foot wide and six inches deep, running down a cliff. On either side of the rut were a series of ledges. ‘Let’s try there,’ he said”. This explains that Stanley acted like a leader found a place to rest. Another example is when Zero leaded Stanley back to the camp to find the treasure. Also, on page 196, it states, “We need to go this way,’ Zero said, first drawing a line on the map and then heading that way himself. Stanley followed”. This shows that Zero led them back to the camp. Lastly, X-Ray was the leader of the group of boys in the camp. In addition, on page 52, it states, “Stanley wasn’t sure what to say. X-Ray was clearly the leader of the group, and Stanley didn’t want to get on his bad side”. This proves that X-Ray was the leader of all the boys in the group. Leadership was also an important theme because without it Stanley and Zero would not find the treasure and gain confidence. But very important to remember the importance of being a leader because people following you are trusting you and you are responsible for success or failure, make sure that the people that are following you are safe, happy, and that your progress is on the right way or path. Many people possess leadership qualities although they don’t rule a country. Meriwether Lewis, the official leader of the Lewis and Clark Expedition has been called “undoubtedly the greatest pathfinder this country has ever known.” Just like Hazel, Meriwether Lewis led a group of followers into unknown territory. The two guides faced many difficult situations that they were able to overcome since they had the qualities of a notable leader. Both of the journeys were rough, but because of the brave leaders both expeditions were successful.
The leadership in this movie was provided primarily by Gordie. He didn’t melt in times of pressure. The group liked him and looked up to him. In the movie Gordie had to deal mainly with two types of difficult group members. Vern was a backseat driver and Teddy had trouble controlling his behavior. Gordie would be considered a leader because he is more likely to direct other group members (de Souza). Gordie’s efforts were combined with the group’s to show that when working cooperatively, they achieve goals more often, and more effectively (de Souza).

“Holes” is written by Louis Sachar. It focuses on boys who go to Camp Green Lake because they have committed a criminal act, and all sorts of things happen to Stanley whilst he is there.

First of all, in the first Chapter, he made a clear definition about leadership. He wrote, “Leadership is the process of persuasion or example by which an individual induces a group to pursue objectives held by the leader and his followers.” In this precise sentence, he pointed that four indispensable parts in one organization: leader, team member, target, belief. He regarded leader doesn’t refer to an individual, but the leadership team, because no individual has all the skills to solve different difficulties.

In Holes, I believe there are three main ideas, which are brotherhood, determination, and hope. In Holes, when Stanley comes to Camp Green Lake, he is introduced to his roommates, Squid, X-Ray, Armpit, Zero, Magnet, Twitch, and Zigzag. At the beginning, even though it may not be clear, the boys become more attached. Digging together every day, as well as sleeping, hanging out, and eating with each other has brought them together. The boys give each other nicknames to show that that the are part of the group now. The strong bond between the boys is truly realized by them, when they are granted freedom and are able to leave Camp Green Lake.
The first is the motif of magic in the story with the family curse that Stanley must overcome. We also see the motif of magic with the yellow-spotted lizards because they are seen as dangerous at Camp Green Lake. One bite from them ensured a painful slow death. Another characteristic is the good versus evil motif. Stanley is the hero in this story because he goes on a journey to break his family’s curse. The evil motif is the Warden that makes the boys dig holes as well as Madame Zeroni for placing the curse on the Yelnat family. Another motif used is fantastic objects with the onions. Stanley and Zero are saved from the lizards after eating a lot of onions. They smelled like onions and the lizards hated onions. The onions seem to have the power to ward off the lizards. The author also uses myths in the story with the stories that are handed down through the Yelnat family generations and the legend of Katherine “Kissin’ Kate" Barlow. The theme of this book is teamwork. I say this because there are a lot of family situations that aren’t always the greatest. Another theme is suffering/saroh. The suffering part is from lack of food. They also have to deal with deaths and separation of family and not knowing where they are. They also don’t know if their family is okay or not. The saroh is from other people's deaths and watching their town and city die out.
The story Holes by Louis Sachar, teaches a very important lesson. It teaches us the lessons of growing up. The story brings us through with Stanley learning his lessons. Especially when at camp with all the dangers of things like dehydration, rattlesnakes, and of course the yellow spotted lizards. The theme of Holes is growing up because in the story he loses his innocence, takes responsibility, and begins learning.

They suggest there is a stronger barrier between the performing and their proposed stage of outperforming, that must be overcome in order for a team to become high performing. According to Levi (2007) for teams to become performing they need to develop effective social relationship in order to cultivate good cohesion and communication and resolve conflicts. Not all teams transition through every stage during their time working together (Rickards & Moger, 2000).
