A Summer To Remember The movie Stand By Me is based upon a novel by Steven King. It doesn’t have the same eerie feel as some of his other books and is generally a more serious movie. It takes place in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon. It is the middle of the summer in approximately the early 1960’s. The kids are bored and that is the setup for their adventure to go find a dead body in the woods. The main role of Gordie LaChance is played by Wil Wheaton. He is having trouble in his life at this time because he just lost his brother and his parents are having a very difficult time dealing with it. Chris Chambers was played by River Phoenix. Chris is considered a loser because of his family and everybody thinks he will do nothing in life. Through it all, the group of kids looks up to Chris and he is admired by them. The role of Teddy Duchamp is played by Corey Feldman. Teddy has a difficult time in life largely because his father was very mean to him before getting thrown in an insane asylum. The lack of discipline shows in that Teddy has a serious problem staying in control. He is always going crazy and his behavior presents a problem more than once to the group. Vern Tessio is played by Jerry O’Connel. He is the short little fat kid that remains a constant pest throughout the movie. Together the for kids embark on a trip through the woods that will be a challenging adventure for them all. Over the course of the movie the group has problems with individual group members, they have to work as a team, and leadership roles emerge. In any group, dealing with difficult group members is vital to the group’s success. Stand By Me has three different types of difficult group members that cause problems in their own way. Vern is probably the most difficult member to deal with. He would be characterized as a blocker. He thwarts the progress of the group, opposes much of what the group attempts to accomplish (Rothwell 145). Throughout the movie he tries to get the group to do other things. Though he usually goes along with the group after some convincing, it definitely slows the group down. Right when they take off on the trip he begins to voice his opposition starting by complaining about why they are bringing the pistol. His character is further developed when he compl... ... middle of paper ... ...es your life and everyone around you. No matter what anyone says, you are a lot different after your life (or another’s) has been placed in the hands of others. The boys not only matured a lot, but leadership roles emerged. It became obvious that Gordie was a leader in the group less than halfway through. And as groups tend to do, they relied on his leadership more and more until the end. The group was faced with the additional challenge of dealing with difficult group members. But the group discovered the concept of synergy when they found if they stuck together and used teamwork, they are a lot stronger unified than individually. The leadership in this movie was provided primarily by Gordie. He didn’t melt in times of pressure. The group liked him and looked up to him. In the movie Gordie had to deal mainly with two types of difficult group members. Vern was a backseat driver and Teddy had trouble controlling his behavior. Gordie would be considered a leader because he is more likely to direct other group members (de Souza). Gordie’s efforts were combined with the group’s to show that when working cooperatively, they achieve goals more often, and more effectively (de Souza).

Lion was suffering from depression, Jeff was dying, Nortie was suffering mentally, and walker was suffering emotionally but as a team they all came together and resolved eatch others problems. The unity the team had was unbelievable and helped save a life and helped solve problems. Determination also helped the high school seniors by not letting them slip or fall climbing the mountain of success. The four team members got through a week of grueling pain mentally and physically by coming together as a team with determination in mind to push themselves to maximum.
... then meets Joy Duncan and Justine who just like him the way he is, they are not concerned with his social status, they like him because he is a kind, genuine boy. As the text goes on, we watch Carl and Justine?s relationship flourish into something bigger. This helps him with his self esteem. Justine shows him the true meaning of friendship and shows him that he is loved and worthwhile. There is also Carl?s relationship with Maddie. At the beginning of the story, Carl follows Maddie around because he notices her, she stuck out from a crowd. He then helped her on New Years Eve. Maddie was quite cruel to Carl but he never gave up and near to the end of the novel, they form a true friendship. Maddie, Carl and Justines friendship was very important because they all leaned on eachother through hard times, like the hard times Carl and Maddie were going through.
They were portrayed as four unique and entertaining individuals. Wil Wheaton (playing Gordy Lachance), presents his character’s troubles and emotions appropriately, helping the audience understand the struggle that Gordy is facing at the death of his brother. This is heightened by the absence of emotional and psychological support from his mother and father, who Gordy believes to have preferred his brother. Chris despite his own dark background is an unlikely companion to Gordy, helping him through his experience. Chris has his own troubles however, he has been labeled from his birth: his father and brother are a bad sort, and so he will turn out to be the same. Though these stereotypes bring him down he demonstrates the characteristics of a resilient and self-assured adolescent, and leads Gordy and their band on their adventure. Teddy Duchamp is most definitely the most goofy and foolish boy of the group. He acts like he has not a care in the world, leaving his friends wondering if he’ll make it to 20 years old. Although he presents this appearance, he is hiding behind a mask. Like Gordy and Chris, he comes from an abusive background. His father, after coming home from service in a war, turned to drink and became violent and uncontrollable. Teddy longs for a loving and caring father and still defends him at every opportunity. Completing the small group is Vern. He is depicted as the childish
They were a single thing, a crew.” The boys realized they were more than just friends they were teammates. There teammate was sick and they weren’t crossing the finish line without him, so they took him along anyway. They had been working on this for three years their teammate deserved to cross the finish line. The boys learned to become a team and trust each other.
Through the boy's’ actions the author shows us the necessity of leadership, for example “Turning their own heads, looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something” (Heynen 1). If they had thought about it, or one boy had stood up and done something then the rest would know what to do and follow along. Further along in the story one of the boys has the idea to use his coat “rounding the back of it over them [pheasants] like a shell” (Heynen 1), then the rest of them did the exact same. A theme in this story could be, sometimes helping the helpless is worth the
To sum up, the boys at Devon have endured a lot as teenagers. They are faced with pressures and values that cause them to develop into adults, at an early age.
Leadership is centred on balancing the followers and the situation. There were different displays of leadership in this case. It is also important to note that leaders do not have to use force but influence. Making decision, managing change and dealing with conflict was demonstrated by the leader of the crew Apollo 13 who was Jim Lovell. There were other leader roles such as Gene the head of the ground crew. Also Marilyn Lovell played a part of a leadership in her own side as she had more experience than any of the other wives. This was her fourth launch so she knew what was expected and Mary Fred wife willingly followed her lead.
To be a good leader you need to be brave, experienced, and hardworking. Unlike the football game life isn’t always about the final score. Leaders such as Richthofen, Rickenbacker, and Mitchell put their lives on the line for what they believed
“Stand By Me” is a film directed by Rob Reiner, which is based on the
Leadership can be defined in a myriad of ways; but for the purpose of the question, it is but not limited to the affect someone who takes charge of a group of people with authority or rank; to be an influence to those who look to the leader. In the epic poem, “Beowulf”, there are two different views on leadership based on their leaders {i.e. King Hrothgar and Beowulf). With King Hrothgar, he accepted the help of Beowulf to fight in order to defend the people of the Herodot, “Beowulf my friend/fight for us” (457-458). Due to the understanding of his age, King Hrothgar shows humility and admirable stance, adapts to someone who admires him, allowing Beowulf to fight for the people of Herodot. Beowulf on the other hand, shows his leadership by taking the initiative and offering his aid to King Hrothgar’s people, to fight the demon Grendel, who is terrorizing the people. This leader...
It involves the more problematic side that can occur within friendships, where the level of their friendship is constantly being tested. Once again there are a group of friends from differing backgrounds. Each one with alternative views of their parents. It is narrated by the main character, Geordie. He is the sensitive writer. His best friend Chris, is the tough one from a broken home. The other two are Vern the silly immature one and Teddy, the reckless one. The story revolves around a rumour that a kid the same age as them has been tragically killed. The body has yet to be recovered. So the four boys go in search of fortune and glory. As the film continues we see the level of their friendship being tested. For example, there is a a great scene where the boys sit around their campfire exchanging stories about their lives. Some are funny. Whilst others are mature reflections of their home life. The conversations serve as a firm reminder that these boys, however socially dissimilar. Ultimately they care a great deal for each other beyond face
The film’s portrayal of the characters display an accurate representation of Cal, however lacks depth of some other major characters in the book. James Dean’s portrayal of Cal Trask brings his character to life through his acting and exchanges with other characters.
A leader is someone who is skilled in what they do, who has experience, who inspires others in the group and who works well with other people. Leadership is also about helping other people to do their best and is a reliable person that a group or team can trust and count on. In Lord of the Flies, by William Golding, a large group of young children is stuck on a island and forced to take care of themselves. Four boys step up and take control of the island, thus becoming the so called leaders in the book. Ralph, Jack, Piggy and Simon are forced to overcome many difficult challenges throughout the novel by acting strong, brave, kind, intelligence and gaining respect
The contrast between different types of leadership appears in the chapter Flies and Spiders in J.R.R Tolkien’s The Hobbit. The chapter starts off with the group no longer having Gandalf lead them through the perils that lie in the Mirkwood. Thorin helps lead the group past a deadly river that cannot be touched and helps them until he is captured by elves. Bilbo battle spiders and saves the dwarves on multiple occasions in Thorin’s absence. In this chapter you see a new dynamic in Throrin and Company. No longer having Gandalf Thorin picked up the mantle of leadership and lead by command. Bilbo then assumed the role of leadership in Thorins absence and lead by putting others first, putting himself on the line. As the story advances, there are
