RY ON APOLLO 13 (1995)
Leadership is centred on balancing the followers and the situation. There were different displays of leadership in this case. It is also important to note that leaders do not have to use force but influence. Making decision, managing change and dealing with conflict was demonstrated by the leader of the crew Apollo 13 who was Jim Lovell. There were other leader roles such as Gene the head of the ground crew. Also Marilyn Lovell played a part of a leadership in her own side as she had more experience than any of the other wives. This was her fourth launch so she knew what was expected and Mary Fred wife willingly followed her lead.
Firstly Jim had tough decisions to make like 2 days before the launch when he was told that ken could not make the trip. He had two choices, to either be sentimental and stand for his friend ken and risk his whole crew being dropped or drop ken and have him replaced and still go on the mission. Some of my fellow students think this was good luck because ken had not gone with them since he turned out to be very helpful in the rescue mission. I fell it was bad luck, this was not expected it could have led to a tragic situation. It was just bad luck that this fault was not noticed prior to their launch and they were still experiencing bad luck even in the midst of bad luck. Fuel tanks leaking, increasing level of co2, freezing temperature etc. Even at the point of trying to make what reduced the co2 the bag they used got torn.
