The Metaphoric Significance of Memory on Karl’s Family In Veronique Tadjo’s novel, The Shadow of Imana: Travels in the Heart of Rwanda, a metaphor of memory is: “Memory is like a sword dipped in steel, like rain in the heart of drought. A tiara placed on the head of a tearful princess, finery over the shoulders of a mother bruised by sorrow, a garment of light to drape over a man broken by the immensity of absence and make him beautiful (45).”
The metaphor of memory pertains to many people in the novel. It is especially relevant to Karl and Annonciata’s family during the Rwandan genocide. As the Rwandan genocide progresses, Karl is away from Rwanda and his family. Therefore, Karl and his family experience trauma in differing ways through

Since Karl is not directly forced to cope with the genocide as he is away from Rwanda, he does not experience trauma in the exact form that Annonciata does. However, Karl is reminded of the genocide as pictures of dead bodies and weeping children and mothers are broadcast (72) “Memory is like a sword dipped in steel, like rain in the heart of drought(45).” Karl’s memory can be related to a steel dipped sword because Karl is watching from afar, viewing the intensifying situation in which his family is endangered. Karl is distraught, feeling brittle, and he can easily be broken up by the situation in which he is indirectly submerged in through his family in Rwanda. “The tone was hardening. The radio was broadcasting hate slogans. Everyone knew that something terrible was in the air, that new waves of anti-Tutsi persecution (72).” “Memory is like rain in the heart of draught(45).” Rain is a symbol of relief, rebirth, and revival. After Karl is reunited with his family, there are hopes that Karl’s children will free him from his agony and allow for life to move forward (75). This pertains to the symbol of rain as rain is the sustainer of life, Karl’s children are the symbol of rain in which they will allow for life to move forwards, past the genocide, to move on with reconciliation of the past. …show more content…
“A garment of light to drape over a man broken by the immensity of absence and make him beautiful(45).” The garment of light is represented by Karl’s children who can either choose to live past the genocide or continue it; their hatred or unity will fuel the outcome of Rwanda’s future. Karl’s children are the ‘garment of light that make him beautiful’ because Karl puts effort and hope into his children being the ones to “succeed in freeing him of his pain…to see life go on…break the chains of infinite grief
Joshua Foer’s “The End of Remembering” and Kathryn Schulz’s “Evidence” are two essays that have more in common than one might think. Although on two totally different topics, they revolve around the central point of the complexities of the human mind. However, there are some key elements both writers have contemplated on in differing ways.
The memories of an individual will give shape to their own identity and how they are able to perceive the world around them; memories allow an individual to look back at where they were and where they are now and to see the contrast of their current life. In the text “Ru”, Kim Thúy, the narrator, finds herself looking back at her memories of her life and dreaming for more. When she arrives at Mirabel airport in Quebec, she is awestruck by the peace and beauty of it compared to her past in in the refugee camps of Malaysia and war torn Vietnam. Throughout her visit, she is able to dream of her future outside of her bleak memories of her past, and imagine a future without the constant strife of living in a post war life. Kim is able to use her memories to shape who she wants to be and allows her to truly admire where she is and where she wants to go, setting a path for her to follow throughout life. In the text, “Ru”, Kim Thúy uses her own past and memories to demonstrate the idea that an individual's memories will shape who they are and show them a life they want to live, whether it is a memory they want to revisit or a memory in which they wish to leave behind. Through this short story we are taken through one of Vic Lang’s memories narrated by his wife struggling to figure out why a memory of Strawberry Alison is effecting their marriage and why she won’t give up on their relationship. Winton’s perspective of the theme memory is that even as you get older your past will follow you good, bad or ugly, you can’t always forget. E.g. “He didn’t just rattle these memories off.” (page 55) and ( I always assumed Vic’s infatuation with Strawberry Alison was all in the past, a mortifying memory.” (page 57). Memories are relevant to today’s society because it is our past, things or previous events that have happened to you in which we remembered them as good, bad, sad, angry etc. memories that you can’t forget. Winton has communicated this to his audience by sharing with us how a memory from your past if it is good or bad can still have an effect on you even as you get older. In her book, Immaculée Ilibagiza shares the power of faith in God through her moving experience of the Rwandan genocide. God saved her life for a reason. “He left me to tell my story to others and show as many people as possible the leading power of his Love and Forgiveness” (208-09). Her book proves that “with God all things are possible”. Her objective is not to give a historical account of Rwanda and/or of the genocide. She gives her own story. She attests that through God’s help, forgiveness is possible – even to those who killed her parents. Her book is meant to help people to let go of the chains of hatred and anger, and be able to truly live in God who is love. Left to Tell is a breathtaking book that proves the fact that “the love of a single heart can make a world of difference” (210). The book is divided into three parts, and each part into eight chapters. The author recounts how God saved her from the shadows of death and helped her discover who He really Is.

The comparison of Eva’s exile can never live up to her Paradise and therefore her memories of her past can never be replaced but instead only can be supplemented. In this paper I will tell you about the horrors the people of Rwanda had to face while genocide destroyed their homes, and I will also tell you about the mental trauma they still face today.
