The dreams in Epic of Gilgamesh resemble the poem as a whole. In general, they are a foreshadow of the poem. Gilgamesh and Enkidu both have dreams with strange symbolic images. These images are flowed into the poem as a very important message to the main characters. In the olden Mesopotamian days, dreams were important to people; dreams represented the future of their well being or their misfortune. It was another way of God sending a future hint to a person. Dreams are essential to these people, similar to the main characters in the poem, Epic of Gilgamesh.
The first dream occurs in Tablet One; Gilgamesh dreams about a rock that falls to earth. Gilgamesh tries picking the rock up, but was too heavy. This dream is described on page ten, in the epic poem, Epic of Gilgamesh, “Gilgamesh rose to relate a dream, saying to his mother: … ; ... On page fifty-five Enkidu tells Gilgamesh what he dreams about. “Enkidu began to speak to Gilgamesh: …;... 'Enlil was wroth at celestial Shamash: "How like a comrade you marched with them daily! '"” Enkidu describes this dream, in great detail, of all the horrors of the underworld. Additionally, Enkidu describes how the gods are planning on bring Enkidu to his death, while Gilgamesh is to be spared. Enkidu is very sick at this point and is unable to do anything else, but lie on the bed. After twelve days, Enkidu dies on the bed. Gilgamesh is scared, at this point, and is afraid he might be next to die. In order to avoid death, Gilgamesh is persuaded on a journey to find immortality. Gilgamesh is restless, becomes fearsome of death, and stops having basic hygiene all because of Enkidu’s death . Without Enkidu Gilgamesh is nothing. When Gilgamesh and Jesus lose their followers/friend their life spirals out of control and they become more unstable than ever before.
Gilgamesh who has always gotten what he wanted could not save Enkidu from death. The death of Eknidu effected Gilgamesh and the way the character would evolve from the death of his friend. The friendship with Enkidu allows Gilgamesh to see the reality of death. When Enkidu dies then Gilgamesh becomes obsessed with his own mortality. “What my brother is now, that shall I be when I am dead.” (Gil. 31)
A lot of these dreams were also made to emphasis the concept of fated heroes and brought to light there chosen destiny. Knowing this, it is easy to say that Mesopotamians at this time, strongly believed in predestination and that everything is picked out for you no matter what and can’t be changed. For example, in the book the goddess Ninsin, Gilagamesh’s mother, interprets Gilgamesh’s dream. “…He is the strongest of wild creatures, the stuff of Anu; born in the grass-lands and the wild hills reared him; when you see him you will be glass; you will love him as a woman and he will never forsake you. This is the meaning of the dream.’ Ninsum is accurately explaining Gilgamesh the dream he had. She interpreted the dream and knew someone was coming soon in the future, which was Enkidu. The whole reason Gilgamesh takes this journey to search for eternal life is due to the death of Enkidu, with whom he was close with. Before all of the events occurred, Gilgamesh had never thought about the topic of death. It’s as if it never crossed his mind; as though he would live forever. He went through phases along his journey. The first was not accepting reality, the second was fighting for eternal life, and the last was accepting reality. Now, his aspirations for immortality are no longer apparent as he enters the last stage.
In many literary works we see significant transitions in the hero's character as the story is developed. This is also true in the Epic of Gilgamesh with its hero, Gilgamesh. In this narrative poem, we get glimpses of who Gilgamesh is and what his purposes and goals are. We see Gilgamesh act in many different ways -- as an overbearing ruler resented by his people, a courageous and strong fighter, a deflated, depressed man, and finally as a man who seems content with what he's accomplished. Through all of these transitions, we see Gilgamesh's attitude toward life change. The goals he has for his own life alter dramatically, and it is in these goals that we see Gilgamesh's transition from being a shallow, ruthless ruler to being an introspective, content man.
Enkidu’s death evokes a disturbing thought in Gilgamesh. He finally realizes that he is mortal. He then goes about trying to find the key to immortality. Gilgamesh first seeks out Utnapishtim, the only human to gain immortality. When Gilgamesh cannot pass the test of staying awake for seven days, Utnapishtim then gives him the plant "Old Men Are Young Again." Despite this second opportunity, Gilgamesh is not triumphant in his search for immortality because a serpent eats the plant and Gilgamesh’s opportunity is lost forever. He does not realize that Enlil, the father of the gods, had already determined his destiny. It is clear from the events of the story that Gilgamesh was not to obtain everlasting life and it is no coincidence that all of his efforts fail in one way or another. The second significant change in Gilgamesh was caused by the loss of his brotherly companion, Enkidu. Gilgamesh couln't bear the loss of a love so powerful. Despite his astonishing power and leadership, something in his life was missing. Moreover, he wept for seven days and nights, thinking his friend would come back because of his weeping. It is in this stage of the epic that one can see the truly sympathetic and compassionate side of Gilgamesh. The grief in his heart had far surpassed the magnificent pride that he had previously displayed so boldly. Enkidu's death left Gilgamesh frightened and confused. However, the despair in his heart was so great that he could not rest; would he ever be at peace? Thus, he became terrified of his own death.
Enkidu 's dream depicts the underworld as place “from which no one enters ever returns”. It is a place where “people sit in darkness; dust in their food and clay in their meat”. All “who wore kingly crowns....stood now like servants” The underworld is a place where anyone dreads to be in because “the end of life is sorrow” the reason why Enkidu had a dream of his fate in the underworld proves that he is truly guilty of unrighteousness. According to Enkidu, he angered the gods by being accused of “cut[ting] down the cedar,...levell[ing] the forest...[and] slew[ing] Humbaba”. Not only has Enkidu not accepted what he has seen in his dream of the underworld, but piercingly cursed his fate because the “great goddess cursed”him. Enkidu unaccepted his fate because knowing he will face death and suffer in the underworld forever. Therefore, if the Underworld in “Enkidu 's Dream” was as elaborated as the Underworld in The Odyssey, Enkidu would have accepted death as part of life and may of not committed the

To spend time with a special someone, the person one feels closest to, and never have to say good-bye would greatly appeal to most people. The Epic of Gilgamesh can be justly classified as an epic because it is a narrative poem. Because it is a long poem that tells a story, it fits the main definition of an epic. Although the translation from the tablets was written mostly in prose, the original story of Gilgamesh was an epic poem. Evidences that lead to this conclusion include the fact that it was a story that was carried on orally before it was finally recorded. The reason this is significant is because it would be a lot harder to remember a prose story of such length rather than a poetic story. Such poetic devices as rhyme, alliteration, contrast, and repetition were used as mnemonic devices in order for the teller to remember the story thoroughly. It is divided into "verses," or lines, which are often connected by parallel meaning or otherwise into couplets. After Enkidu's death, Gilgamesh comes to the realization that one day he too will succumb to the same fate as his friend.
He, however, ruled with a tyrannical behavior in ways such as sending young men to fight in senseless wars, fulfilling his sexual satisfaction with young brides on their wedding night, and treating his people as if they were beneath him as human beings. Upon wrestling and defeating Enkidu in a battle, the two became extremely close as friends. Their friendship influenced and shaped Gilgamesh’s perception of the world, especially upon the death of Enkidu. Once his close friend passed away, Gilgamesh became more self-aware of his own mortality and sought for the answers of gaining immortality. Although this may seem like a selfish act of his part, Gilgamesh underwent a major character transformation during his journey in the underworld. Upon meeting and hearing the story of how Utnapishtim was granted immortality by the gods, Gilgamesh accepts the challenge put forth by Utnapishtim to stay awake for six days and seven nights. One of the main themes in the epic is that death is inevitable, which is shown through Enkidu's death. When Enkidu dies, Gilgamesh becomes very worried, because he realizes for the first time that everyone is going to die at some point in time. The fact that Enkidu is a close friend makes it even more visible to Gilgamesh that everyone is mortal. Then, along with this realization, comes the theme of denial. Gilgamesh does not want to accept the fact that he will die. He denies the truth, because he does not want to think about the truth or cope with the tragedy that has struck him.
