Believing is Seeing When I was going through my teen years, I depended on songs to help me cope with my feelings. Songs with a deep meaning and an upbeat vibe always interested me the most. One of my favorite artists during this time was Katy Perry and here wide array of songs. I was always impressed and intrigued to know that she writes most of her songs herself, along with a few co-writers. She writes her songs in a poetic manner, which especially stands out in one of her most popular songs, “Firework”. This song is poetic because of its use of rhyme, alliteration, and theme. The sounds of poetry are imminent early in the song. End rhyme is used in the first verse of the song in the lines “Do you ever feel, feel so paper-thin / Like a house of cards, one blow from caving in?” (3-4). This use of end rhyme is used periodically throughout the rest of the song. Towards the end of the song, end rhyme is used in excess to accentuate the gradually increasing beat of the song. For example, “Boom, boom, boom / Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon / It’s always been inside of you, you, you / And now it’s time …show more content…
This theme is first shown by relating the audience to low self-esteem and doubts through rhetorical questions, such as “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag / Drifting through the wind, wanting to start again?” (1-2) and then relates to fireworks to make the listeners feel good about themselves, in the line “Baby, you’re a firework” (15). The song focuses on embracing what they can do by shocking those who made them doubt themselves. This is highlighted in the line that states “Come on, show ‘em what you’re worth” (12). I believe Katy Perry wrote the song to help listeners feel like they are worth it, even if they feel they are not good enough. Being able to emotionally connect and inspire an audience makes her a great artist and song
Rhyme-The last words of line one and line three of each stanza rhyme. The last words of line two and line four of each stanza also rhyme. The rhyming words contribute to the rhythm and flow of the poem.
These attributes gave her the key to working with the most notable producers, script writers and musical producers in the history of Broadway. Her many shows gave her the opportunity to understand herself as a Broadway actress and her voice stands alone to all of the people who followed. Her voice will live on in theaters and she will continue to remain a pinnacle of Broadway history.
You can see her influence in most of today’s art. I grew up on Janet’s music and I simply love each era of her work. To me, Janet is more than a singer, she is a true artist.
...ng to this day, she is one of few who could compete with the men of hip-hop, but she never pretended to be anything but a woman. She not only sang about female empowerment, but she wrote about being a woman from the insecurities that we as women sometimes feel to the nirvana of being in love. Sensuality and femininity were always as important to her which was her strength, and message to get out to women especially those of color.
Not only a great singer, she taught herself how to play the guitar and the harp, and
Rhymes are two or more words that have the same ending sound. Songwriters and poets often times use rhymes to help their piece flow better, or keep the audience or readers engaged. Billy Joel’s song “We Didn’t Start the Fire” is filled with rhymes, with a rhyme in almost every single line: “Brando, the King and I, and the Catcher In The Rye / Eisenhower, Vaccine, England’s got a new Queen / Marciano, Liberace, Santayana goodbye” (line 6-8). Billy Joel uses the rhymes to move from one topic to the next, and the song is even in chronological order from 1950 to 1989. The rhyme schemes of the song are end rhymes as well as perfect rhymes. On the other hand, the poem is completely free verse, or without a single rhyme. This makes the poem less artistic and harder to remain engaged and interested. In addition to rhyming, allusions are another way of displaying artistic
A rhythm is “a literary device which demonstrates long and short pattern through stressed and unstressed syllables” (CITATION). To create a rhythm in his song, Billy Joel uses end rhyme, internal rhyme, near rhyme, and rhyme scheme. The first rhyme element used by Billy Joel is the end rhyme. End rhyme is when the last syllables within a verse rhyme to make the song flow better (CITATION). He uses end Rhyme when he repeats words at the end of a line with similar sounds. For example, burning rhymes with turning in the lines “it was always burning…Since the world’s been turning” (CITATION).

In Regina Barreca’s Poem, “Nighttime Fires”, she uses many elements of poetry to help portray the theme of the poem. Poetry is all about the way it is written. Poetry is short, so it tends to be much more complex than a novel. Poetry uses many elements to help the reader fully understand what the poet’s overall goal is. It is easy for the reader’s to enjoy this poem because it is easy to understand, and it can paint a great picture in the readers mind about the poem, using such elements. “Nighttime Fires” uses many elements such as: Tone, Image, and Figures of Speech.
Rastafarianism is a religious movement that combines the cultural rituals of Jamaican folk Christianity with the Pan-Africanist movement lead by Marcus Garvey. The religion is influenced by the beliefs of the Nazarite Vow. This vow describes in great detail the significance of the Rastafari movement and the influence Samson has on Rasta’s. During the early twentieth century Marcus Garvey, “the founder of the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA),” prophesied the crowning of a black king (Olmos 183). Then a few years later his prophesy was considered fulfilled when Haile Selassie was named Emperor of Ethiopia. Rastafari was founded on November 2, 1930 with the crowning of Ras Tafari Makonnen, Haile Selassie, or Emperor of Ethiopia.
The main concept of Doubt: A Parable is the development of doubt and certainty. The preface plays an important role, because it depicts the role doubt can play in people’s lives. John Shanley tells the audience that “we are living in a culture of extreme advocacy, of confrontation, of judgement, and of verdict.” (Shanley, 2005) The preface outlines the various ways of dealing with doubt and how some people can recognize what doubt really is. The theme of doubt vs. certainty is shown throughout the story.
In many cases, poems are very abrupt and awkward sounding when read or spoken aloud. A simple solution to end a poem’s awkwardness is a rhyme scheme. Many poems don’t rhyme for reasons of subject matter but to make the poem more interesting and easier to read the poet uses rhyming words. In many cases, poets use end rhyme, which is using words that rhyme in the end of the phrase or sentence of each sentence. “A Poison Tree” by William Blake is a great example of end rhyme used in poetry.
...In a nut shell, the overall message in Katy Perry’s song creates a positive impact towards listeners. Repetition in her lyric clearly shows that a person has potential which has yet to be discovered. “Boom, boom, boom/Even brighter than the moon, moon, moon”(37). The lyric tells that when the potential is revealed, it will definitely bring an individual towards unimaginable success in life. Also, for successful people, they are mostly equipped with high self esteem and persistence, Katy Perry once said that “everyone has the spark to be a firework” (Vena) where in her song “Firework,” she reminds her audience to derive strength from their inner self and build their own stone steps towards success. Also, Katy Perry tells her audience that failure will not last forever. Ultimately, people can build a better future of their own if they possess true faith in themselves.
Her tone in this song is at first mellow, but when she comes to the stanza of this song, she deliberately raises her voice to emphasize her genuine feelings. The tone describes her want and need for her thoughts to be truly heard. She wants the listener to capture her essence and the view of herself. In this specific stanza, she explains that s...
