In A Place in the Heart, the main character, Edna, just lost her husband and must figure out how to take care of her family, without him. In Their Eyes Were Watching God, the main character Janey goes through struggles of being an independent young black woman, in the south, while married. Both Edna in A Place in the Heart and Janey in Their Eyes Were Watching God are both strong independent women in their own ways. Both women mostly lived on their own, even though it was under different circumstances. Janey chose to be an independent woman, and preferred to be on her own with no one telling her what to do. When Joe first started to verbally abuse Janey, she attempted to fight back, but eventually she gave in to Joe and did as he said. She was also forced to marry Logan, so she let her mind wander as often as possible. When she met Joe, he claimed that he would give her more freedom, so she ran away to be with him. Edna on the other hand had no choice about living on her own. When her husband died she had to learn how to live on her own and support her family. At first she had no clue how to do this while still keeping her family, but she looked for help where no one would even think of looking, the help of a coloured man, Moz. Edna was so determined to get it done that she was willing to die for it. She said “I don't care what it takes. I don't care if it kills me. I don't care if it kills you. I'm not going to give up. And if the two of you do, you can go straight to hell.” Janey was also determined to persevere. She stands her ground against Joe, even when he hits her, and she fights fire with fire. She also stands up for herself, when people are telling her that it is a bad idea to be with Teacake, and ignores
