I Daniella M. Genzale was caught shoplifting from Sephora in Roosevelt Field Mall. I put two items of makeup into my pocket book and walked out of the store passing all points of purchasing.When I left the store the security made us stop and ask us to give them what items were taken and don't pretend nothing was taken because he watched us. Then we walked back into the store with the security and they took us into the back room, once we were there he showed us the video of us taking the items and calculated how much was stolen all together. We were in the room for about an hour before the police officers came and hand cuffed us. At this point I was in tears crying, I was worried my mom was calling me and she was nervous. According to Webster's Revised Unabridged Dictionary, theft is, "The act of stealing; specifically, the felonious taking and removing of personal property, with an intent to deprive the rightful owner of the same" (Webster's 2). Before the advent of moveable type, no one had cause to apply this concept to information rather than physical property. If one were to steal a book, the act was easily recognized as of the same moral color as stealing a horse, a nugget of gold, or any other physical object. The thief?s possession of the stolen item constituted the rightful owner?s lack of it, a loss both real and measurable. Today, theft seems a hazier concept, due to the popularization and codification of Intellectual Property (IP) rights. IP rights differ from standard property rights in that they signify an individual's right of ownership over "intangible things" (Kinsella 3). Arguably, the most important such things are patents and copyrights. Patents protect inventions, and copyrights protect "original forms of expression" (Fisher 1). In both cases, the right to ownership amounts to ownership of an idea, not a physical object.
Life has so many exciting events that happen, from birth to having a family and one of those events is going to college. High school students prepare everything to be accepted by their dream college. In college, there are many opportunities and excitement,. But with all happiness, there’s always a negative to coincide. A very big problem that is rampant among big college campuses is sexual assault. One in five women will be sexually assaulted while attending college and yet sixty-one percent of cases are unreported. Why is that? How come so few are heard? The reason why most on campus sexual assault cases go unheard or unreported is because the college or university has their attention focused on income rather than the well-being of their own students. The result was a broader, more encompassing definition that was clearly more strict and rigid. With the revised conduct code plagiarism cases have escalated out of control. Perhaps the problem may also be due to the increased drains on students time, in which young adults are trying to work, achieve in school, engage in extracurricular activities, and volunteer. Competition has become fierce, and the result has been an increase in plagiarism. The problem is educators have put more effort into stopping the spread than into understanding the causal factors for the upsurgence. With the increase in plagiarism, educators feel they must have a firm defense against what they see.
We all have the means and capability to make a change in this world for the better of sexual assault. Whether it be reporting the incident, the victim retelling his or her story to those who’ll listen, or forming groups against any mean of sexual assault. This would greatly help indeed, but take this into consideration; what will happen if such a thing were never to be done? That being the case, we would more than likely suffer in the long run for having much more campus attenders being violated and sexually assaulted. Especially for our known individuals who’re attending schools for semesters; we’re basically saying that we could care less about the wellbeing of our friends, family, and associates who are by themselves on campuses; that if they get sexually assaulted, it’ll be their own faults. There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating. Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled “A Whole Lot of Cheatin’ Going On.”
Over the course of this semester, among all the different perspectives, two that stayed on my mind the most are the social problems perspective and the social responsibility perspective. While both of these perspectives are similar in that they both cover theories about crimes, they differ greatly in the way in which each suggests crime occurs. The social problems perspective provides that people are not actually responsible for their actions, but rather that their actions were the result of a failure of society to prevent the problem. For example, towns often create after-school programs to help keep children off the streets and out of trouble. However, towns that do not have such after-school programs often report higher rates of teenage crime as well as unattended children. Children are naturally curious and even mischievous. After-school programs that help to keep the children busy and involved in activities report to have lower occurrences of vandalism and gang activity.

Cheating by students in American schools has become a serious and growing problem. A 2005 poll of 12,000 college graduates in the contiguous United States with a 62% response rate showed the following: 45% of all students cheated on an examination that counted toward 10-20% of their grade and 51% cheated on an exam that counted toward 33-50% of their final grade. When asked why they cheated, 70% of cheaters stated that they did not fear failing the exams on which they cheated and that cheating for a "higher grade" was the primary motive. The most common method of cheating involved electronic technologies such as instant messaging via telephone, e-mail, internet searches, and other devices holding electronic versions of material covered on an exam. For outside classroom work, 71% of all poll responders admitted to copying homework from someone they considered "smarter". According to the Uniform Crime Report, a violent crime occurs on an average of every twenty-six seconds in the United States (UCR, National Data). Young people, primarily between the ages of 17 and 19 and in their early twenties, commit the vast majority of crime (Barkan and Bryjak, 33). It is also common for individuals at this age to attend college. Based on the Uniform Crime Report (Table 9), twenty-four colleges and universities have increased enrollment rates from 2005 until 2012 in New York State alone. Despite the consistent increase in the number of individuals continuing their education, it appears that the amount of violent crime has decreased among college campuses. This contradicts the common crime myth that crime is increasing throughout the United States when in fact it is actually slightly decreasing or remaining constant. It is possible for the relationship between increasing enrollment rates and decreasing rates of violent crime to be explained by the common misconception that crime is actually decreasing. However, there is evidence that supports this inverse relationship is due to the underreporting of crime among college campuses, which often happens because the college doesn’t want to damage its reputation. As a result, they choose to deal with the crime themselves rather than getting the authorities involved.

Cheating is prevalent and on the rise, especially in schools. In a 2009 study of advantage high school students from 4,316 high schools, 93% stated they cheated at least once. Within this same study 26% of upperclassman cheated five out of nine ways students cheat (Galloway 378), usually by plagiarizing , copying another student’s homework or exam, or collaborating on homework (McCabe 3). Students are under a lot of stress and pressure to succeed in school and in their personal life which comes from other peers, society, family expectations, and themselves. When students see fellow classmates cheat, it sends a message to them that it is acceptable. It has become the normalized (Galloway 378-379). However the consequences if they are caught are getting expelled from school, or receiving a low grade in the class, which in turn will show on their transcript. It’s been shown that teachers don’t report students cheating, handle it in their own way, or they just simply ignore the issue because the teachers don’t want have to deal with all the paperwork in reporting (McCabe 133). A growing concern in today’s society is rape on college campuses. This is a grotesque action that is happening way to often on college campuses. I’ve decided to research and write about this topic due to the fact that soon I will have nieces and nephew’s going off to college. The rise in sexual assault accusation and cases have risen in the media in the past year, it seems as if more and more we are finding out about assaults that are being reported on college campuses. Even some that are reported to campus police and nothing is done about it. Therefore we have to not only figure out how to reduce these things from happening but what we must do when they have happened.
