Ethics and the Current Cheating Epidemic
There is an epidemic of cheating in American universities. Students are finding easier and more efficient ways to cheat. Morals and morality are changing. Students, members of the younger generation, and teachers, members of the older generation, differ on what is cheating. Morality even differs amongst students. Some students still adhere to the traditional sense of morality, and find what other students do an abhorration of morality. This essay is a mostly a pathos and ethos argument that attempts to appeal to the reader’s sense of right and wrong by using so-called “authorities.”
The first section is filled with pathos arguments designed to make the reader believe that the majority of college students are cheaters. Multiple sources are brought in to prove this, each with their own ethos and pathos.
First is a freshman named John Smolik, and his words are incriminating for all college students. He says “Cheating IS an answer” (Clayton 20). This is nothing new. Cheating has always been an answer for students. Most of them get caught, however. The fact that a student says this, however, makes people think that he has cheated or that it is widespread. In fact, he is just expressing a personal opinion, which he is entitled to.
The next ethical source is something called “The Center for Academic Integrity.” This source interviewed a small sample of students, about 7,000, on 26 small campuses. Now, when analyzing this source, one has to wonder why they chose such a small sample. If we do the math, that’s only 270 students per campus. My high school had more than 270 students. One could easily ascertain that the institution doing this study picked out only the results that they liked.
Next, the author uses some loaded language which stands out:
Add to that a pervasive change in societal values, and students can easily be snared if they lack a strong moral compass - as well as a campus where peers and administrators take a firm stand against dishonesty. (Clayton 20).
Do you have a “Strong moral compass?” Are you a victim in the “pervasive change in societal values?” The Christian imagery is thick here. But the author does not stop there. He quotes a provost at Vanderbilt as saying, “No one cheated [in the 1960s]” (Clayton 21).
In this final chapter, Christian Miller speaks about cheating. There is a cheating behavior that many people do for various reasons. This assumes that the cheater might not be the one who is advantaged. Most humans today cheat when the opportunities arise. In studies, it is clear that many students cheat while in college. Of the many students who cheat, only a small fraction of them get caught. In a very large group of people, it was seen that only 3 people stated that they have never cheated while in school. In one case, a student found an exam on the printer and mass distributed it to the class and the class finished the exam quickly and scored higher. This made the teacher skeptical and a retake was made. It is clear that cheating is very prominent on college campuses. Both Under Armour and Nike have goods and bads but at the end of the day Under Armour is a better company, with a better clothes line. Nike came out over thirty years before Under Armour, but Under Armour has by far surpassed Nike in popularity and style. In another thirty years when Under Armour has been out as long as Nike today, Under Armour will be more superior than Nike in the athletic field. The statistic shown in the student survey of fall 2007 and spring 2008 reveal that only a select few of the students willingly uphold the school’s rules (Source: E). This lack of enforcement relates to the percentage of how many students have not been caught doing unethical behaviors. By increasing the number of students who follow the rules, the amount of students who cheat will decrease proportionally, thus creating a healthier environment. Additionally, students have shown to have an overall effect on other students and their behaviors: “Students who enter a college of mostly ‘honest’ types will more often choose not to cheat even if they are not innately ‘cheater’ types” (Source: C). Honest people who abide by the rules provided can influence other students into being ethical and vice versa, implying that the environment should promote the growth of virtuous behavior. Luke had always been the one student to cheat. Each time he had homework, he depended on his friends to get it completed. Every time he had to take a test, his desk partner or cheat sheet was always by his side. His grades were then much higher than average, and people expected so much of him. He had cheated so much during high school that it had become his daily routine. On graduation day, Luke graduated with high honors. He was accepted into one of the best universities in the state. When applying, he was asked to sign an honor pledge so he was able to get into the school. When summer break was over, he packed his things and moved into his new dorm room at college. When his classes started, he got loads of homework. Luke was thankful to have most of his classes with his roommate, so that he was able to cheat off of him. Luke made it through most of the semester by cheating on each worksheet or paper that he had to complete. At the end of the semester, he had many tests that he had to do. Luke made cheat sheets that he planned on using during the tests, but each one was observed closely. He suddenly realized how difficult it was to complete each test when he knew none of the information. Each one he completed, he scored low on it, making his final grade much lower than people had expected him to get. On his final test, he understood none of the material, so he decided to take the risk and get his cheat sheet out when he thought that the college professor was not looking. Unfortunately for Luke, he was caught. He was asked to leave the classroom and later found out that he was kicked out of the class. People were surprised that Luke was caught cheating, because most had thought better of him. Luke made the poor decision to cheat on one test and was caught, getting him into trouble that he would remember for the rest of his life. Luke’s future could possibly be affected by his decision to cheat, and cheating is a decision that he would not choose to make again. Luke’s future needs to be sustainable, but will his future be sustained if he makes the poor decision to cheat?

Cheating is a rising issue throughout the educational system. It is an unfair and immoral method to achieve higher marks on an exam or a better essay score. William Chace discuses in his article, “A Question of Honor”, how well students keep up to being academically honest. Chace’s article is very effective due to the crucial points of logical reasoning, pressure, and cheating itself. He utilizes logos and pathos to appeal to his audience. These arguments are demonstrated in the essay that connect to the question of are students cheating and why they do it.
They could overtake Adidas if they continue with their innovative strategy because they’re only $3.5 billion away. Since now-a-days consumers are all about technology and new innovative products, if Under Armour continues with their innovative strategy they will continue to see an increase of financial growth, become a major competitor for Adidas, and a closer competitor to Nike.
There is an ever broadening problem spreading throughout colleges all across America: cheating. Is it a serious offence or just a harmless crime? Cheating is on the rise, but schools and colleges are not far behind with ways of dealing with it. Mark Clayton deals with this issue in his essay entitled “A Whole Lot of Cheatin’ Going On.”
From a personal experience of speaking at one of these meetings, I can say that it is definitely not easy speaking to older adults about foster care and adoption. What I can say I learned about the meeting is that a positive story can change the lives of many other teenagers who want a stable home and someone they can call their parent. I wanted to create these posters because it is important to me to share with the community that adopting older children are blessings in disguise. Creating this poster helped me contribute to a non-profit organization without donating money. This project also helped me learn that strategizing what movement and rhetoric to use for two different audiences will impact how successful the poster will be in getting people to come out and change the opinions about teenagers in foster care wanting to be adopted.

The legalization of prostitution, or sex work, would mean the full legalization of buy and sell sexual acts between consensual and of age people. Prostitution should be legalized because it increases tax revenue, it improves the safety of Prostitutes, and improves the safety of the general population, while many people claim it will increase sex trafficking and.
One of the greatest achievements in the 20th century was the invention and mass production of antibiotics. Antibiotics or antimicrobials are chemical drugs that are used to treat a variety of different infectious bacterial diseases by destroying or slowing the growth of the bacteria. Antibiotics are toxic to the target cell but do not harm the host. They are designed to attack various kinds of parasites, fungus, and bacteria. Contrary to popular belief antibiotics do not work against viruses like those that cause the common cold. Antibiotics are broken down into different classifications because antibiotics are selective killers, which mean that it has been manufactured to kill a certain malicious bacteria strain. Each antimicrobial differs from one another by their physical and chemical properties and by their antibacterial spectrum of activity. The different kinds of antibiotics fight off the infection in different ways. The different ways the antibiotic functions is by inhibiting the bacterial cell from metabolizing, by preventing the bacteria’s cell wall synthesizing, by creating a permeable membrane of the bacteria cell, or by suppressing nucleic acid transcription and replication. Most antibiotics today are semisynthetic, which means their natural derivative has been altered. Antibiotics have two distinct groups that was separated by their effect on bacteria. Bactericidal antimicrobials kills bacteria while bacteriostatic agents hinder the bacteria from growing or reproducing. They are also seperated depending on their activity sepectrum. Narrow antibiotics target a spesfic group of bacteria while a broad spectrum targets many different kinds of cells.
Cheating is defined as to "deceive by trickery" or "to act dishonestly, practicing fraud." (Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary, 1993). A recent survey has shown an overwhelming majority of students have cheated. They, however, have justified their actions and do not believe that is a “big deal” (Cheating is a Personal Foul, 1999).
In four focus-group discussions conducted by the Center for Public Interest Polling at Rutgers University, many students appeared blas about academic dishonesty. "I guess the first time you do it, you feel really bad, but then you get used to it," said one.
Academic dishonesty has become a massive phenomenon. It occurs in the majority of higher education institutes. Researches demonstrate that academic dishonesty is widespread and on the rise. For instance, Bill Bowers in 1964 made the most important study of academic dishonesty in higher educations. He analyzed a number of 5.000 students in various samples of 99 schools and universities and concluded that three fourths of the respondents of this study admitted to have done some academic dishonesty (Butterfield, McCabe & Trevino, 2001, p.220). Cauffman, Feldman & Jensen (2001) define academic dishonesty as an attempt of students to present the work of other people as their own work. (2001). Academic dishonesty includes behaviors such as cheating on exams, copying other students’ work, plagiarism, sabotage.
