Elizabethan Theatre was so popular that everyone enjoyed it; even Queen Elizabeth. She influenced some of the plays performed in that time and people were honored to perform plays for her. Plays were very important back then and were a part of life. Theatre in the Elizabethan Era was very prominent, including Coriolanus, a tragedy by William Shakespeare, and could be attended by anybody.
In 1558 Queen Elizabeth ascended to the throne (Nardo 78). She began a rule that would later be the reason why the time period is called the Elizabethan Era. There was a war before she stepped up to the throne and it was with Spain. The war with Spain had to be paid for by Elizabeth while she also had to protect herself from Mary Queen of Scots (Senn). So she had a lot on her plate in the beginning.
Plagues were a very serious deal back in this time frame. Many people feared epidemics such as small pox, scarlet fever, and tuberculosis which killed many people. They did not have good medicines or vaccines so it would be hard to prevent getting these diseases. Also if you acquired them it would be nearly impossible to fight it off and become healthy again. One of the most know plagues of all was the Black Death which occurred shortly before the Elizabethan Era. Something strongly tied to this was land in the Elizabethan era. The Black Death in the middle of the Fourteenth century reduced the population making less need for land (Senn). Population however would not stay down forever. The value of the land rose when population began recovering from the Black Death and wool trade started to prosper (Senn).

This play really doesn’t pertain to the time period because the play is Roman based while it was written in Elizabethan times. Now the play may have some of the same morals of other plays written in this time by Shakespeare. This play is communicating that sometimes the only person one can trust is their self. It is just a good play that really shows that it is a tragedy. The Elizabethan Era was a very unique period of time. The theatre, and types of play communicate this, especially theatre. Theatre was very popular during this time period, including the play Coriolanus, and anybody could go see the plays.
Eighteenth century British theatre was perhaps the starting point that would evolve into modern theatre. Women started to be allowed on stage and acting techniques were beginning to change. Leading performers were like celebrities with a number of fans. Theatre was an intricate part of the social ladder. In the overall scheme of things the actors and actresses played an important part in making the theatre what it was. Without the performers there wouldn’t really be theatre, so in order to understand the eighteenth century British theatre the performers of that era need to be understood.
To begin, in the early 15th century England was still healing the problem of the black plague. The plague took an estimated seventy five million lives all around Europe and the Mediterranean ("History.com"). The death rate from the plague was so high because of how fast it could kill and how easily transmitted it
The music was played very often as a normal routine. People considered it a must to know how to play an instrument, sing, or be involved somehow with music in this age of time. Instruments in the 1600’s were able to make any type of music; the amazing part was no matter how many instruments you used it would always sound pure and the same. Another unique thing about the music and culture in the 1600’s is that it was also healthy for the body. During the Elizabethan Era the people would gather together to dance and dance for hours, their stamina must have been incredible. Music was use to entertain most people. Before the music became a big part in people life during the Elizabethan Era theatre played a really big part during this time. It was out of the ordinary for women to take part in or be a part of the theatre during this period of time. Do to the fact that women were not allowed to play in any of the plays or drama, younger boys who were still young played the role of women.
Shakespeare portrays how his ideal king is defined as an ultimate hero in the historic play, Henry V. This play helps everyone in the Elizabethan time period understand the reality of being a ruler. During this summary of the Elizabethan time period and Henry V, I will be talking about Queen Elizabeth and how she affected the time period all together including social class and the Hundred Years War. The era was named after her because of the flourishing works of poetry and plays that were written in this time period (Elizabethan 867). Plays made some people who lived during Elizabethan times extremely wealthy. (Elizabethan 869). The standard of living during the Elizabethan period varied depending on social status. Life for commoners was very harsh and dirty. The streets were filled with sewage and many people died from improper hygiene (Elizabethan 5). The government had no welfare or government help. People had to work in order to get money, if a person did not work they would have to get money from somewhere else or perish (Elizabethan 6). Elizabethan times in the 1600s was a progression for the world of the theater. A period named after Queen Elizabeth I of England, it is from this period that modern day society has its foundation for the entertainment industry. From the violence that was prevalent because of the Black Death, people turned to the theater for its poetry and romance. During this time period, there were two types of theatrical performances that were available for the people’s viewing, comedies or tragedies. These two genres were never really intertwined until the time of William Shakespeare. His play, Romeo and Juliet, is an example of both a comedy and a tragedy. It starts off as a comedy with Romeo weeping like a baby because of his love Rosaline, who did not love him back and ends as a tragedy when Romeo and Juliet, a pair of star crossed lovers, commit suicide because the lost of each other. It was also during Shakespeare’s time that writer were finally acknowledged by the people. Before this time, writers were not considered upper classman. Another group of people that began to rise into a higher social class were the actors. Actresses were not present back then because women were not allowed on stage. It was considered unladylike to have a female actor. Men played all the parts. Theater owners were dependent on actors to make them a profit. Rehearsals for the plays were fairly short, only lasting for about a week. The performances themselves would only show for three to four days.

Queen Elizabeth came into power under somewhat unique circumstances. She was placed in charge of an England which was changing both religiously and socially. The England which she ruled was like no other that came before it, in large part due to her father. Not only did Elizabeth have to face a Protestant England, she also had to deal with the growing prominence of the gentry, a parliament with increased validity, and dwindling royal funds. In addition to the changes which the country was undergoing she was also forced to navigate a traditionally patriarchal society. Ultimately, the Elizabethan society thrived off of what consisted within it. Changes in culture added variety in society. Acting companies have been around almost as long as theatre itself. The first of the professional stage companies recorded were back in the 1560s. They were mostly used for their comedic trade. They can be seen as part of tribal rituals all the way to Broadway musicals making their way across countries. There are many forms of acting companies. There are companies that meet once a year or they can travel around countries for long periods of time. There are also many different skill sets needed to be a part of these companies. Stage companies are a large part of the theatre culture and community.

Greece produced its share of legendary playwrights; Sophocles and Euripides are two of the most famous. I believe that both eras have influenced modern theatre simply because the Greek so obviously influenced Elizabethan theatre.

The Globe underwent a lot of hardships throughout its time as the prominent theatre in England. The Globe theatre was beautifully constructed, was a very prominent theatre in England during the time, and was the house for many of Shakespeare’s and Lord Chamberlain’s Men’s plays.
