The tabla is the most famous percussion instrument in Northern India. The tabla consists of two drums that appear to be of varying sizes: one small and one big. Tablas are almost completely played just by the use of the fingers. Each drum has one head that is tapped or hit to make a sound. Regardless, of having to dedicate his time elsewhere, he still makes time for the tabla here and there. He tries to teach some to his children. Also, he sometimes teaches in a sunday school in his temple. He occasionally plays alongside friends: “once in a while when friends get together, we play some music.” He does not take money he says and repeats that he’s no professional. A clarinet is a woodwind instrument. Most clarinets are made of wood. The instrument consists of a tube with a mouthpiece at one end and a bell-shaped opening at the other end. A clarinet has open tone holes and other holes covered by small metal levers called keys. The musician places his or her fingertips on the holes and keys and blows on a flat cane reed attached to the mouthpiece. The reed vibrates, producing a full, rich tone. The musician plays different notes by covering or uncovering various holes. Clarinets are manufactured in five pitches. The B-flat soprano clarinet is the most popular.

“How Musical is Man?” was published in 1974. This book was written by John Blacking, a musician turned social anthropologist. His goal in writing this ethnography, and several other papers during this same time period, was to compare the experience of music-making that takes place within different cultures and societies throughout the world. In this book, he discusses and describes the musicology of the Venda people in South Africa. Though he does go to Africa to research and learn about the Venda people and their music, he specifically states that his book is “not a scholarly study of human musicality” (ix), but rather it is a summary (written from his point of view), which is both expressive and entertaining, of several different issues and ideas that he has seemingly been contemplating for some time.

Percussion instruments have changed size and shape as time has passed. In the middle ages, most drums were made out of hollow tree trunks, and covered with the skins of water animals to create a drum head.
