Kate Chopin wrote a short story about women’s liberation in the 19. century. In “The Story of an Hour” we are introdused to Mrs Mallard who is told that her husband is dead. Mrs Mallard has got heart troubles, and therefore the sad news are brought to her carefully by her sister and her husband’s friend Richard. Mrs Mallard reacts with grief and she wants to be alone, so she locks herself into her room. At first, I got the impression that Mrs Mallard was sad because of her husband’s death. But as I kept on reading I understood that this wasn’t the case at all.
Mrs Mallard is pretending she is mourning over her husband’s death. She gives the expression that she wants to be alone with her grief, so she locks herself into her room. But because of the third person limited point of view, we know what is really going on inside Mrs Mallard’s mind.
In her room Mrs Mallard sinks into a roomy armchair, and when she looks outside her window she sees “the tops of trees in the open square before her house, and they are all aquiver with the new spring life”. “The delicious breath of rain was in the air and countless sparrows were twittering in the eaves”. This indicates that Mrs Mallard isn’t mourning at all. She senses positive vibrations and starts to taste her freedom. Freedom is an unfamiliar feeling to Mrs Mallard. But suddenly she begins to recognize the feeling and she is repeting the word “free” to herself over and over again.

In the short story, “The Story of an Hour,” author Kate Chopin presents the character of Mrs. Louis Mallard. She is an unhappy woman trapped in her discontented marriage. Unable to assert herself or extricate herself from the relationship, she endures it. The news of the presumed death of her husband comes as a great relief to her, and for a brief moment she experiences the joys of a liberated life from the repressed relationship with her husband. The relief, however, is short lived. The shock of seeing him alive is too much for her bear and she dies. The meaning of life and death take on opposite meaning for Mrs. Mallard in her marriage because she lacked the courage to stand up for herself.
In The Story of an Hour Kate Chopin gives a very inside look at her feelings about marriage, female independence, and the human will. The first description that Chopin gives of Louise (the main character of the story) is her heart trouble. The way that it is suggested, gives the reader reason to believe that the ailment may not only be physical but also mental. Louise's sister, Josephine and Richards treat Louise with great care as though she is fragile. They are afraid that breaking the news of her husband's death to her may be harmful to her condition. When Louise hears the news of her husband's death, Chopin tells us that she "wept with wild abandonment." This apparently was not the expected response. This is known, because Chopin tells the reader that many women would have received the message and been so paralyzed by it that they would not have been able to show emotion. Therefore, it is assumed that Louise is a rather passionate person.

In the exposition, Mrs. Mallard has heart troubles, so her family and friends came to see about her over her husband's death. In the rising action, Mrs. Mallard was sad over her husband's death. In the conflict, Happiness came over Mrs. Mallard after his death because she knew she was free from him. In the falling action, Mrs. Mallard was making herself ill because she was obsessing over the fact that she was free and did not think she would ever feel that way. The first reader has a guided perspective of the text that one would expect from a person who has never studied the short story; however the reader makes some valid points which enhance what is thought to be a guided knowledge of the text. The author describes Mrs. Mallard as a woman who seems to be the "victim" of an overbearing but occasionally loving husband. Being told of her husband's death, "She did not hear the story as many women have heard the same, with a paralyzed inability to accept its significance." (This shows that she is not totally locked into marriage as most women in her time). Although "she had loved him--sometimes," she automatically does not want to accept, blindly, the situation of being controlled by her husband. The reader identified Mrs. Mallard as not being a "one-dimensional, clone-like woman having a predictable, adequate emotional response for every life condition." In fact the reader believed that Mrs. Mallard had the exact opposite response to the death her husband because finally, she recognizes the freedom she has desired for a long time and it overcomes her sorrow. "Free! Body and soul free! She kept whispering." We can see that the reader got this idea form this particular phrase in the story because it illuminates the idea of her sorrow tuning to happiness.
