1. Introduction - The poverty problem in Chile
When Chile became a democracy in the early 1990s, it experienced a rapid drop in poverty, which corresponded with its economic growth. However, despite continuing growth as Chile approached the turn of the century, the decline in poverty stagnated (see fig 1.) with the number of people in extreme poverty actually increasing from 5.6% to 5.7% in the years 1998-2000, highlighting that growth alone is not sufficient in reducing poverty. The imperative to look beyond economic growth for reducing poverty is reinforced by data from ECLAC, which reveals that Latin American countries with better social indicators than others had lower levels of poverty than those with the lowest social indicators. It was within this context, with the intention of addressing this issue, that Chile Solidario was created.
2. Chile Solidario: an overview
Aims and Objectives
Chile Solidario is a program targeting Chile’s extreme poor. Implemented by the Lagos administration in 2002, it is more than just a conditional cash transfer program. Rather, it aims to be...
In Peter Winn’s book, Weavers of revolution, the revolution from below collided with the revolution from above, producing unexpected yet catastrophic effect in Chile. Generally speaking, a revolution is a complete transformation of an established government or a political system and a radical change in people’s views and behaviors. However, a revolution from above refers to major political and social changes that are imposed by the government on the population. In contrast, a revolution from below is when the people of a nation rebel against the hierarchy to gain a revolution. In Chile, the revolution from above was initiated by Salvador Allende’s election in 1970, but it was mistaken as a signal to the workers “to take the revolution into their own hands and fulfill their historic aspirations through direct action from below” (140).

Poverty has been a growing problem in America, and it most likely will never stop being one. Someone who is identified as being in poverty lives beneath the poverty line determined by the Federal government. The poverty line in 2015 for a family of four was $24,250. These are the people who are really considered poor. Poverty isn’t just a problem in the United States; in fact, other countries struggle just as much, if not more, than the United States does. Many people struggle to keep themselves above the government’s poverty line, shown by the fact that the percent of poor people in America hasn’t drastically changed over the years. However, it is possible to get out of, and ultimately stay out of, poverty.
Poverty in Developing and Less Developed Countries The world includes less developed countries and developing countries. Less developed countries are countries considered to be poor and often contain many people who are in absolute poverty. Developing countries are countries like India, which are gaining in wealth. There are two types of poverty within the world.
What is poverty? What do we think the real definition of poverty is? As humans, we always complain about the small things in life, but what about the people who live in Peña Blanca? What do they have to say about their daily struggles just to earn a simple grain of rice? As some people say, poverty is a beast that cannot be beaten. The people of Peña Blanca suffer from extreme poverty, and yet, they are willing to give or offer anything to the people in urgent need or need help, which what instantly caught my attention. Their generosity was unexplainable. An example of this in the movie is when a man reported that his wife is going to die because he doesn't have enough money to pay for medicine since she’s extremely bedridden, and then Anthony, a fellow neighbor, offered his money to pay for the medicine, even though that would affect him negatively since his family are also extremely poor . Poverty has played a major role in these people’s lives, making everything a challenge.
Thesis: There have been some strong advances for women in Latin America in the last two decades. More women have access to education and have opportunities to participate in politics. However, some deep-set cultural values still remain which limit still limit equality and empowerment for women in Latin America. Women are the key to development and are, in many cases sources of untapped economic potential. Eliminating gendered inequality in the region can help increase development and reduce poverty in the region.
Chile has a vast cultural influence that becomes complex dating back to early agricultural settlements all the way up to the late pre-hispanic period. Northern Chile for instance was a region that was heavily influenced by altiplano traditions. These particular traditions spread all the way to the coastal valleys of the north. In the southern regions, influence came from the Mapuche cultural activities. The country has been dominated mainly by spanish rule from early colonial period all the way up to the Republican period. Hence, Chile’s main cultural influence originates from the Spanish. Chile was not only influenced by the Spanish, but other countries as well. These countries consisted of French, German, English and other European influences. Something interesting about the German migrants is they are influenced by Bavarian style rural architecture. Being such a huge impact on the style of cities, the Germans have influenced architecture in cities such as Valdivia, Osorno, Puerto Varas, Victoria and many others.
Many people do not realize that there are tens of millions of people in America who are living in poverty because they are stuck on the fact that America is one of the richest nations. People who are living in poverty barely have enough money to survive on basic necessities like food, shelter and electricity. They often have a hectic schedule filled with work, school, or other activities that they have to do in order for them to live a somewhat stable life. Unfortunately, there are others who are living in poverty that may be ill or disabled and barely able to survive even if they are receiving money to help with their situation. There are a few programs that help those in poverty with their financial problems, but they only help them to a certain extent. Changes need to be done to help alleviate the poverty rate because these people should not have to deal with all of these hardships or have such a negative perspective of life. Therefore, America can reduce its poverty by raising the minimum wage, making health care more accessible, and by making child care more affordable. These solutions will be a great start to reducing poverty and they will lead America into a brighter future.
Mexico is a country that has progressed much over the years. Although it has had many advancements, the country is still facing many problems. One problem that is still affecting many that are living there is famine. ”Sixty million people, half the Mexican population, live in poverty, and 20 million of them live in extreme poverty” (Eslbee). There are many reasons as to why famine exists in such a high number in Mexico. The one most obvious reason would be poverty. I feel that famine due to poverty has dictated Mexico more that it has in any country.
In 1990, the Chilean Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) was established and became the primary strategy chosen by the state, to handle the systematic human right violations committed during Pinochet’s military dictatorship. Chile is one of the earliest countries to establish truth and reconciliation commissions and continue the pursuit of justice for many of the disappearances and killings during this era; reparation programs have grown gradually and a second truth commission, the “Valech commission”, has been established. The Chilean TRCs are considered to have “set the standards” for such commissions and are an important source for revelation and information. In this paper, I argue the effectiveness
As developed countries quench their thirsts for petrol, developing countries around the world are left behind, force to watch on without any help from the outside community. Being poor means to be disadvantaged in every single way. It means not being able to support yourself or your family or have the basic necessity to life. Without substantial help for these helpless people then we should be feeling guilty that we are living lives far better than what others are experiencing. Poverty may because by wars, disease or lack of education and infrastructure and the resulting consequences may be hunger, starvation, crime and ultimately death. If poverty is not eradicated then injustice will continue, increasing death tolls and lives.
It used to be the biggest cocaine producer in the world, while nowadays it sill contributes over half of the world’s production (Colombia Reports, 2018). People in rural areas have little-to-none opportunities and the well-paid jobs apart from the oil trade and mining are very limited. Thus desperate locals were more willing to turn to illegal practices (Worldview Stratfor, 2015). A law from 1994 which divided the country into “stratas” was meant to improve the quality of life for poor people, decreasing taxes and some home costs (Singh, 2013). However this was not the case with the law dwindling social mobility and segregating society, it also shown how unequal the society was, with 89% being in the groups considered “poor” (Hudson,
... of revenue collection of the machinery of redistribution, important though these are. An optimal financing mix should do three jobs well: (i) generate the resources needed to establish and strengthen appropriate social protection systems; (ii) ensure that the incentives generated by the financing modalities reduce child poverty and child vulnerability; and (iii) secure legitimacy for social protection institutions and policies. Section three examines the main issues involved in financing social protection in low income countries, beginning with a discussion of trends in sub-Saharan Africa, and the issues raised by the current global crisis; followed by a discussion of alternative policy strategies adopted in three Latin American countries: the use of natural resources in Bolivia; budgetary surplus policies in Chile, and borrowing in Mexico. Section four concludes.
Poverty in the Philippines The rich, the middle class, and the poor are described by the way we live and the amount of money one has. There are many different ways of describing what poverty is, whether it is by how you live or how much money you have. What is poverty and what does it mean to be poor? Not many of us know the true meaning of these terms.
When I was younger poverty and homelessness seemed like such far out terms. I didn’t understand how someone didn’t live in a house with four walls and a roof over their head. When I thought about poverty, I always pictured third world countries most of the time. Especially due to the commercials of these places with the children crying, wearing scraps of cloth, and having to drink polluted water. In regard to homelessness, I had the views that usually appear in movies, disheveled people on the streets who have drug and alcohol problems. As I grew up I started to notice how each person has an important role in society, but I couldn’t see what their role could be. In school we didn’t really talk about these people either so I assumed they weren’t really apart of society. My parents combatted that with teaching us the ‘golden rule’ and treating others how you would want to be treated. There are some instances that they gave some money to these people. Since I had the views from what I saw on TV. I thought they would go spend it on drugs or alcohol. I remember asking my mom why give them money if they are going to spend it on those things. She said that that is not for me to worry about and that we do it
