What is poverty? What do we think the real definition of poverty is? As humans, we always complain about the small things in life, but what about the people who live in Peña Blanca? What do they have to say about their daily struggles just to earn a simple grain of rice? As some people say, poverty is a beast that cannot be beaten. The people of Peña Blanca suffer from extreme poverty, and yet, they are willing to give or offer anything to the people in urgent need or need help, which what instantly caught my attention. Their generosity was unexplainable. An example of this in the movie is when a man reported that his wife is going to die because he doesn't have enough money to pay for medicine since she’s extremely bedridden, and then Anthony, a fellow neighbor, offered his money to pay for the medicine, even though that would affect him negatively since his family are also extremely poor . Having a balanced nutritious meal is one of the main key factors for a human to stay healthy and survive for a longer period of time, but what if you don't have the money to purchase a simple meal, then what do you do? Children in Peña Blanca are affected by this, in fact, the lack of nutrition is the main reason why they don’t have any energy to play outside like every other child does during their years of childhood, which personally saddens me deeply. David K. Shipler in his essay At the Edge of Poverty talks about the forgotten America. He tries to make the readers feel how hard is to live at the edge of poverty in America. I do not believe there is an answer for poverty because it’s such a big issue all around the world; however, it's more serious in some parts of the worlds than others. After reading “Flavio’s Home” I couldn’t understand how poverty existed in the United States as it does in Rio. America’s poverty will never compare to theirs, and the worst part is, that in other regions of the world, it's even worse. No wonder so many people put their lives at risk just to migrate to the U.S. in the hopes of a better life. People think that by migrating to better established countries than their own, it will decrease their chances of living in poverty. However poverty is just an issue that can’t ever be solved because everyone seeks more material possessions and money, which eventually runs out.

The image that we viewed in class shows a woman and her child chained to a cross that has the word poverty written on it. The figures depicted in the image are running towards education but they lack the means to escape from the chains that are binding them to poverty. The depiction of poverty as something that people are chained to and are incapable of escaping shows that people in extreme poverty can not escape no matter how hard they try because they do not have the opportunities to break free. “They will turn to other boys who steal to get what they want. I can already see them behind the bars of their prison instead of behind the bars of my poverty. Or they will turn to the freedom of alcohol or drugs, and find themselves enslaved. And my daughter? What is poverty? Well, according to Webster's Third New International Dictionary, poverty is "lack of money or material possessions; poor." Two-thirds of the world's population fits this definition. I know that many times we think of being poor as not being able to buy the car we want or take the trip we can only dream about. However, being poor, living in poverty, hits a lot lower than that. For example, a resident of the country of Chad will only bring in $100 each year. Since many people can make more than that in one week, some in one day, can you imagine having the feed a family of five or six, or even a family of two, on only $100 a year?
