The Young Victoria Historical Period films, like any other movie, should have a good source of entertainment so the audience is not easily bored. However, one of the most truly important parts of a historical period film is the accuracy of what is being portrayed. Certain liberties can be taken, but take too many and the stories get unrecognizable. Especially when one has a story about one of the most important rulers of the British monarchy. The Young Victoria is the type of film to do this. While some liberties were taken with it, it seems to be as accurate with what happened during the early years of Queen Victoria’s reign as it can be. The romance between Queen Victoria and Prince Albert was as real in real life as it is in the movie. In fact the only thing that seems to not be completely accurate is the scene in the movie where there is an assassination attempt. Victoria and Albert get in the carriage and are driving when a man pulls out a gun and attempts to shoot the queen. It is Albert who then puts himself in front of Victoria to protect her and is shot. When Victoria later asks Albert why he did it he replies, “I had two very good reasons. First I am replaceable and you are not.” He then goes on to talk about the fact that Victoria is the only wife he has or ever will have and that he will love her until his last breath. This scene perfectly explains to the audience that he did his brave act out of love for Victoria and not any other reason. Even though the shooting scene is not one hundred percent accurate and there is probably no way for us to know if they changed words of affection afterwards or even if they had quarreled before they got into that carriage the scenes are beautifully portrayed. The love story may very well be the most important part of the film as it adds much to the drama and story of the movie. The movie The Young Victoria is an amazing film that just happens to be about some very important people in history. The film follows well my set of rules for what a period history film should contain and in this movie one will not only find romance and drama but also actors that actually look like the characters they are portraying and certain parts of history portrayed accurately in the film with only little exaggeration to detail.
