The impact of the Structural Adjustment Programs imposed by International Financial Intuitions (IFIs) such as the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund on the developing countries of Africa has led to the destruction of Africa’s social sectors and has handicapped Africa in its fight with poverty, the AIDS pandemic, and keeping children in school.

It is thought-provoking, in the sense that Africa’s need for foreign created a race to the bottom, much like what Pietra Rivoli described in The Travels of a T-Shirt in the Global Economy. Due to some African states’ reliance on foreign aid in order to mine and profit on their resources, they allow business standards to be lowered and for Chinese firms to tip the contracts moresoever in the favor of Chinese firms. This lowers the potential earnings of African states by lowering royalty rates, for example. Additionally, Burgis’ research was thorough and transparent. When he did not receive a response or if his questions were dodged, he made it obvious to the readers. Sure, some could view this book as too anecdotal to be used as a credible source of Africa’s situation. However, this is due to the nature of the system Burgis is writing about; after all, they are shadow states for a reason. Some readers will be saddened by this text, others angry, most curious to learn more, but above all, everyone will be intellectually stimulated and
From an average American's perspective, globalization is a win-win situation for everyone involvedt. But we fail to see the other end of this situation, where lower-class families around the world are faced with troubles. In countries such as Indonesia and India, American companies purposely set up factories and take advantage of the population by giving them wages below minimum wage to manufacture their products. Families are forced to send their children to work in these factories in order to make enough money to survive. When there is only enough money to put food on the table, living conditions are poor and necessities such as clean water are not as available as they are for us Americans. In other countries such as Colombia, the drug trade is prevalent everywhere and is used as a source of income for many farmers who only want to produce crop for money so their families can prosper. Billions in Aid is given from the U.S government to find a different crop to use but nothing is accomplished as drug shipments continue to come in to America and drug crops are still being produced. If we are ever going to make Globalization beneficial for all, there must be a universal effort to employ laws to protect the lower class who can't afford to protect themselves.

South Africa has large varieties ethnic backgrounds; unfortunately for them none of them are allowed their chance to shine because of the cloud of racism that has over shadowed their history. Like the United States, South African countries are built for the success of whites before any other ethnicity. This can be found in the countries politics and economics alike. For over 300 years this racism has occurred. Around the 1940’s South Africans have coined a policy for this racism, “apartheid”. In English apartheid can be translated to “Apart-hood”. (2) This will be touched about in more detail later. Like the United States, South Africa has had to deal with centuries of racism, the problem being that South Africans racism doesn’t seem to be depleting as fast as other countries in the same situation.
“…increasing international trade and financial flows since the Second World War have fostered sustained economic growth over the long term in the world’s high-income states. Some with idle incomes have prospered as well, but low-income economies generally have not made significant gains. The growing world economy has not produced balanced, healthy economic growth in the poorer states. Instead, the cycle of underdevelopment more aptly describes their plight. In the context of weak economies, the negative effects of international trade and foreign investments have been devastating. Issues of trade and currency values preoccupy the economic policies of states with low-income economies even more than those with high incomes because the downturns are far more debilitating.1”
Emerging markets play a huge role and important role in our economy. Each emerging market is very important as an individual country but in the end it is the combined effect of all the countries put together that will have a greater impact to the economy. It’s not every country and any country that makes it into the emerging market, they have to have or meet certain criteria’s and qualifications. To identify the BEM (Big Emerging Markets). (1997 Jeffrey E. Garten “New York Times. Chapter 1) certain criteria’s have to be met. They must have large populations, large resource bases, large markets, and are powerhouses in their regions. China, India, and Indonesia are three of the four most populous countries in the world, each of them including Brazil have large land masses and are part of BRIC(S) which stands for Brazil Russia India China South Africa. If any big ten countries are economically successful their progress or their achievements will spread to neighboring countries around them. When they experience a crisis, just like they can help their neighboring countries with progress so can they bring them down when they suffer an eco...

Industrialized countries have four times as many managers and workers as the less-developed countries, also known as LDCs. As a senior at the University of Arizona with a double major in Economics and Geography, economic development in the global south is something I would like to pursue as a career after graduation. It is therefore necessary to understand the problems associated with it and why different approaches have not been as successful as agencies have hoped. First, I will define economic development and its major players. Although there are many complicated factors that cause economic development issues, I will focus on and explain how ignorance of local circumstances, large debts, problems with trade, and a lack of consideration for certain people have made economic development difficult in the global south.
Also, the current irregular financial growth tendency has widened the breach between the rich and poor such as, South Africa and other further developed nations. According to financial forecasts if the existing blueprint of uneven monetary growth persists, one of the poorest nation of the world such as, South Africa will raises to be even poorer will a power plant or not. The second question has made social scientists, policy creators, and worldwide institutions to reorganize ideas about the impact of globalization on nations such as, the above.
