Many of us are aware of the story of the boy who cried wolf. At least, that is the story which our parents and teachers tell us, so that we know the possible consequence of lying, and that we should not lie because it is a bad characteristic to develop. Despite having brought up the way we are, knowing that lying is not a good thing to do, people still lie. Furthermore, not all the consequences are all that bad, hence we probably still tell lies no matter how our conscience tells us to do otherwise.

Very often, acquaintances may extend their wedding invitations to us. As much as we do not want to waste our time to attend, especially Asians who are inclined to give a customary envelop which contains money (often to cover their cost of food at the banquet) to the couple, we also do not want to lose face at the same time. Hence these wedding dodgers come up with a million excuses so that they do not have to accept the invitation. Sometimes, we may come across dishonest sales persons who may charge us a higher price than what the product is actually worth. Unknowingly, we just simple-mindedly hand over our money to them and these sales persons will be happy to have made a profit easily. A spouse who constantly live a double life and does not tell the truth to his or her partner, is a cheater who have constantly use one lie to cover up another. He or she is running the risk of ruining the marriage, as the partner may eventually find out about their other life, and ends up with misplaced trust, a broken heart, and probably a wrecked marriage at the same time. A doctor may temporarily deceive in order to save a patient’s life, knowing that the truth can deteriorate the health of the patient.
