Love is one of the most centralized themes in The Way I Spent the End of the World, but the meaning of it constantly evolves as the worlds of the characters begin to change. Love comes in all forms and doesn't have to be romantic, for instance the compassion and connection between Eva and her younger brother, Lalu. One of the most prominent aspects within Eva's life is her love life between Alex and Andrei. Andrei portrays love that is based upon actual feelings, passion, and rebellion. Even though they do not have sexual interactions, they're founded upon the emotions between them. They once loved each other and because of that adoration they wanted to have sex and encapsulate that feeling. When Eva gets in trouble and Alex doesn’t come to her rescue that emotion slowly starts to shift. Her parents begin to see their relationship as a way to gain safety and security because of Alex’s father’s profession which causes Eva to view it in the same manner. At the party, Eva is still romantically tied to Alex because they have been together throughout their whole lives as both neighbors and partners, but she begins to realize the benefits that can be created from affiliating herself with the policeman’s son. Eventually, the perceptions of her parents begin to become hers as she understands the benefits that come with having that relationship with him, such as medication for her sick brother. When she doesn’t escape with Andrei, it signified that she was going to stay with her family and eventually, try to rekindle the connection she had with Alex. When they eventually do have sex, there are no familial connections between them and the words, “I love you,” are never uttered, compared to the beginning where they exchanged sentiments. Throughout the whole sex scene, Eva is emotionless and shows no true connection with Alex which clearly shows their disconnect from one another.
