Everything Is Illuminated Essay Masculinity has a different meaning, as well as impact, for everyone. For some, masculinity is simply identifying as a man. Others, however, see it as an ideal and a goal that one must reach. Alexander Perchov is living in a time and place where a man is expected to fit society’s definition of masculine. A man is expected to be sexually active with women, tall and handsome, and not sensitive or emotional. Over the course of the novel, Alexander Perchov challenges society's definition of masculinity as he begins to learn to accept his true identity rather than that of someone whom he would consider to be a “premium” person. At first, when Alex talked to his brother, Little Igor, he portrayed himself as an ideal male and in his eyes a premium person but Alex realizes that he has to be honest with his brother and take off his mask of masculinity. Alex wanted Little Igor to look up to him as well as want to be him one day immensely so before he began to accept himself, Alex pretended to be someone he wasn’t to impress Little Igor. Alex decided to show Little Igor a “smutty magazine” so that Little Igor would be aware of the “many positions in which [Alex is] carnal” (Page 3). Alex wants to Little Igor to think he is the epitome of a masculine man to which Little Igor should look up to so he pretends to be this ideal man in a society that is often carnal with girls and talks about it. Once Alex has embraced his personality to an extent, he acknowledged that he had desired Little Igor to “feel as if he has a cool brother” and an older brother who had a life he wishes he could “impersonate one day” (Page 144). Alex knows that most of what he told Little Igor about his personal life was a non-truth that he told because he believed that Little Igor would not love him as much if he acted how he wanted to but Alex now knows that he can no longer pretend to be someone else for his brother as that is lying to someone he
In Gail Bederman’s Manliness and Civilization, she aims to describe the concepts of manliness and masculinity at the turn of the century. Bederman explains that the concept of what it means to be a man is ever changing as a result of the ideology of the time as well as the material actions of the men. During the Progressive Era, many forces were at work that put pressure on the supremacy of white, middle class men. Some of these forces included the growing move toward empowered women, the unionization of the working class, and the move from self-employment to big, corporate business. She delves into the way that both racism and sexism were used to build up the concept of masculinity and the turn of the century discourse on civilization.

Realistically, when someone is more powerful, they have the ability to set the rules. Men have historically held power in society, which means that women did not have as much stance or freedoms as men have had in the past. For example, Canadian women did not have the right to vote until the year 1916. “Myth of Masculinity” is a title of a class that peaks a modern day feminist, or anyone who thinks liberally. From the books and movies that were discussed and shown in class, some of them have changed, or complicated my view of the five words: love, deception, desire, gender, and crisis. The class has introduced many aspects of elements that contradict the original meanings. There is a push-pull, a back and forth, and a duality within these words. In the two films Cosi fan Tutte, and The Crying Game they have shown me that there is a double meaning, or a duality to these five words.

In addition to varying from person to person, the concepts of masculinity and femininity also vary across time periods, across different cultures, and even across the span of an individual’s life. Kimmel pluralizes these terms to “acknowledge that masculinity and femininity mean different things to different groups of people at different times” (Kimmel; 10). He goes on further to reference sociologist R. W. Connell’s explanation of hegemonic masculinity, which states that it is “constructed in relation to various subordinated masculinities as well as in relation to women” (Kimmel; 10).
