The Way, a movie directed by director Emilio Estevez, is about how a california-based american ophthalmologist, Thomas Avery , tries to overcome the death of his son, Daniel , and ends up walking the camino to fulfill his son’s journey. The story goes along with four characters, each of them have different characteristics. However, there is one unique particular character in one of those four. He is by the name of Joost, who , unlike the others, is very humorous, joyful, and at the same time, serious side of him.
Getting to the point, one character trait seen in Joost is that he he very humorous at any situation, often making the audience giggle and laugh. In one scene, Tom has just arrived at the first stop, and is seen talking with Joost. “ ‘I followed the same route as you to a point, but then I detoured at Valcarlos. And that’s why I got here a couple of hours before

you.’ ‘My guidebook didn’t say anything about any detours.’ ‘ Yeah, but that’s because you haven’t got the Dutch guidebook.’ ‘The Dutch guidebook?’ ‘ Yep. Because we Dutch, we’re always trying to find the quickest way to get to the next party. Because you know what they say, If it ain’t Dutch, it ain’t much.’” Another such hilarious scene was when Tom and Joost were catching some air outside the housekeeper’s house. “ ‘ I know you’ve got a thing for Dutch men, senora.’” From these lines, readers are able to decode how Joost has a humorous and flirting characterization of himself. Moving on, Joost has shown a joyful side of him.
In the beginning scenes of the movie, when Joost first meets Tom, he talks in a jolly-minded way. “ ‘ Hi. I'm Joost. I'm from Amsterdam. Tom. Hey, Tom. I saw you on the train this morning. We came from Paris. We were on the same train. You're not a pilgrim, are you? A pilgrim? A trekker? A peregrino? Huh? You're not here to walk the Santiago de Compostela. No, I'm here on family business. Ah. Well, it's not for everyone, you know. In fact, somebody died on the Camino this week, only one day into the trek. Yeah, such a tragedy. Yes. But it's no mystery why I'm doing this trek. You see this gut? My older brother is getting married in Rotterdam in December and I want to fit into my old suit. You could just buy a new suit. No, but it's the third timethat he's getting married. But wedding or not, I mean. A bit leaner, a bit lighter.’” Throughout the movie, including this scene, Joost talks in a very jolly-minded way, often greeting others, and making new friends along the journey. It is this characterization that earns him more friends and
respect. Finally, Joost shows the seriousness in him. While talking to Jack from Ireland, when asked about what Tom has come to walk the camino for, he stiffens up and answers in a low , sad voice. “ “‘He carries the cremated remains of his son. He got caught in a bad storm over the Pyrenees, first day out.’ ‘Oh, you're kidding me.’ ‘ No.He carries that box in his backpack. He leaves little piles of ash all along the Camino.’” while Joost is a very hilarious man, he shows his seriousness in the appropriate times. Through Joost, the director has shown that a person must always be able to forgive others, to laugh out loud, to show humor and making the audience laugh. Whether the situation is good, and a person is laughing with others, or the situation is bad, for example Tom mourning his son Daniel’s tragic accident , a person must always interact with others the same, laugh the same, and treat others equal.
In the Lilies of the Field by William E. Barrett, Homer and Mother Maria both display straightforward, hardworking, and stubborn character traits. Firstly, Homer and Mother Maria both display a straightforward personality by being brutally honest about their opinions. For example, when Mother Maria asks Homer to build a chapel, Homer speaks his mind by telling her he does not want to build it. Mother Maria shows her straightforward behavior during Homer’s stay at the convent. One morning, when Homer sleeps in late, Mother to becomes extremely upset and is not afraid to show how she feels about him. Secondly, both Homer and Mother Maria display a hardworking spirit. Homer is a hardworking man because after finally agreeing to build the chapel,
Another element of mise-en-scene that helps define Napoleon’s personality is his physical setting. The town that he lives in is uneventful, repetitive, and simple, all characteristic of his persona. The high school, his neighborhood, the open fields and pastures; all of them emanate one distinct word that uncannily matches Napoleon’s temperament: boring. This is not to say that he is boring per se; Hess gives him words and actions that call for sidesplitting laughter. His demeanor as a whole, however, is as dull as stone. His not so subtle, lack-luster voice and uninterested facial expression gives an efficient comedic effect, but would be considered dreary and mind-numbing in any real life situation. More on his acting and performance will be discussed later; there are other elements, su...

In the short story “The Man Who Evolved” written by Edmond Hamilton, a mad scientist Pollard evolves to human forms under concentrated cosmic rays. The passage is centrally important to the story, as it hints the potential horror scientists may endure if they do not follow scientific procedures responsibly. In the passage, Hamilton compares the results of the scientific research. Through this comparison, he communicates the overarching idea that even though scientific research on evolution may bring some beneficial effect to human beings, its ultimate result should be carefully considered, as in the story the research creates a mind twisted monster that wants to own the entire world.

Watching a film, one can easily recognize plot, theme, characterization, etc., but not many realize what basic principle lies behind nearly every story conceived: the hero’s journey. This concept allows for a comprehensive, logical flow throughout a movie. Once the hero’s journey is thoroughly understood, anyone can pick out the elements in nearly every piece. The hero’s journey follows a simple outline. First the hero in question must have a disadvantaged childhood. Next the hero will find a mentor who wisely lays out his/her prophecy. Third the hero will go on a journey, either literal or figurative, to find him/herself. On this journey the hero will be discouraged and nearly quit his/her quest. Finally, the hero will fulfill the prophecy and find his/herself, realizing his/her full potential. This rubric may be easy to spot in epic action films, but if upon close inspection is found in a wide array of genres, some of which are fully surprising.
When the man and boy meet people on the road, the boy has sympathy for them, but his father is more concerned with keeping them both alive. The boy is able to get his father to show kindness to the strangers (McCarthy), however reluctantly the kindness is given. The boy’s main concern is to be a good guy. Being the good guy is one of the major reasons the boy has for continuing down the road with his father. He does not see there is much of a point to life if he is not helping other people. The boy wants to be sure he and his father help people and continue to carry the fire. The boy is the man’s strength and therefore courage, but the man does not know how the boy worries about him how the boy’s will to live depends so much on his
To fully appreciate the significance of the plot one must fully understand the heroic journey. Joseph Campbell identified the stages of the heroic journey and explains how the movie adheres meticulously to these steps. For example, the first stage of the hero’s journey is the ordinary world (Campbell). At the beginning, the structure dictates that the author should portray the protagonist in their ordinary world, surrounded by ordinary things and doing ordinary tasks so that the author might introduce the reasons that the hero needs the journey in order to develop his or her character or improve his or her life (Vogler 35). The point of this portrayal is to show the audience what the protagonist’s life is currently like and to show what areas of his or her life are conflicted or incomplete. When the call to adventure occurs, the protagonist is swept away into another world, one that is full of adventure, danger, and opportunities to learn what needs to be learned. T...
In Ana Castillo’s, So Far From God, the novel focuses on the character Sofi and her four daughters. Castillo narrates the women’s life situations all whilst portraying the negative effects of a male dominant society and the manipulation of women. She taught her daughters how to survive without a dominant male in their life, although throughout the novel they come into contact with several men who lead them into severe situations. The unjust deaths of her daughters led her to becoming a leader of her community. The third eldest, Fe, was a victim of an unjust work environment. The youngest, La Loca, was a victim of AIDS.
Writing a story is pretty difficult. Writing a short story is even harder, there is so much that has to be accomplished; in both commercial and literary fiction! The plot, the structure, whether it has a happy, unhappy, or indeterminate ending. There must be artistic unity, chance, coincidence, rising action, climax, falling action. Most importantly there must be characterization. Characters make the story! “anyone can summarize what a person in a story has done, but a writer needs considerable skill and insight into human beings to describe convincingly who a person is” [page 168]
In the saying of “Character is what you are in the dark” by Dwight Lyman Moody, can meaning many different things. One being, “you are most yourself when no one is watching”, another one also being, “dark and troubled times bring out a person's true nature”, and “your true nature is on the inside”. This quote can or cannot apply to the play of “Romeo and Juliet” by Shakespeare.
The purpose of this research report is to investigate the personality of Beyoncé Knowles in terms of humanistic and trait conceptions of personality.
In the last 5 weeks, we have learned about personalities, learning styles, temperaments, and emotional intelligence. For the learning styles, we took a personality test only to find out what kind of personality trait we have. Temperaments are the way we learn how we want to handle things in life. Emotional intelligence is how we learn to read each other, and learning how and when to say something to diffuse a confrontation. There are four different kinds of temperament’s. There is analyzers, supporters, creators, and directors (Bethel University, 2006). Analyzers like for things to be organized and dedicated to their work. Dedication is a great attribute for an analyzer. Supporters take things
Human personality is a complex area of study. This is because in different situations, a human being will portray a certain behavior and this may be part of culture that is developed over a long time. There have been diverse observations on explanations regarding human personality. Over the time, theories have been developed attempting to explain this complex human phenomenon. Theories of personality have taken different approaches that try to make people understand the human personality. It is evident that no single theory can effectively describe personality in totality. This is because personality is not a stagnant thing but rather is an ever evolving thing. It evolves because it is an aspect of human being and naturally human beings change with time. What they used to be a 100 years ago is not what they are today. Even within a span of one week, a human being can decide to completely change his behavior due to an encounter with a compelling situation. Therefore, personality theories can be said or viewed to be valid for only a certain period of time. However, there are concepts embedded on personality theories that give them long term validity.
