The Wall has recently premiered as a game show hosted by Chris Hardwick. A nearly forty-foot pegboard contains fifteen slots at the bottom that all have cash value, and as the ball drops toward the slots, a team of two contestants anxiously await their destiny. Upon the ball arriving at its destination, the contestants are quizzed on random facts that advance the game with a correct answer. As the contestants compete further along in the game, the potential monetary prizes grow larger and larger. A few twists and turns throw a wrench in the seemingly easy operations of gameplay, so audience tension will remain at a high. Potential viewers are more inclined to watch a new show that is stamped with a recognizable and credible studio. Credibility amongst celebrities is also critical in the entertainment industry. Host, Chris Hardwick, has already established a successful career in both comedy and television. Fans of shows such as Web Soup and The Late Late Show will recognize his contributions and direct attention toward The Wall (“Chris Hardwick”). NBA superstar LeBron James is also an executive producer for the show, which will brilliantly expand the audience into basketball fans who support the star forward for the Cleveland Cavaliers. James recently began acting in films, as another avenue for him to expand his fan base. Reality shows sent a much-needed lifeline to the television networks industry. These shows have found a new way to bring much needed viewers, and even more important they brought in much needed money. The money came rolling into CBS after premiering Survivor, which brought in a profit of around $30,000,000 to the network. Even though Survivor is the must costly reality show, costing close to one million dollars to produce and hour of programming. In comparison to other shows, which cost far more like CBS’s series “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” which cost over 1.6 million to produce per hour. With the amount of money coming in such large sums to networks have had to close monitor how much is being spent. Clearly’ the reality shows have brought in much needed assets to the flattering television networks.
Television viewers have more viewing choices than ever before in deciding how to spend their time with television. In recent years, reality television has become a popular genre for viewing audiences. According to Nabi (304), reality television programs, "film real people as they live out events (contrived or otherwise) in their lives.” One popular subgenre of reality television is romance-based competition shows. These shows typically follow a contestant on their search for love and as they choose between a group of attractive suitors. Over the course of an entire season, the lead contestant eliminates the group of suitors until only one-suitor remains and the couple becomes engaged.
One of the greatest captivators of public interest in the 1950s was the emerging quiz game show on television. The public, naively trustful, fell in love with television game shows. People found them to be new, exciting, and similar to the captivating radio quiz shows so popular before television's advent. Some game shows were developed primarily for laughs, while others were played for prizes or large sums of money. These game shows were so popular that at their peak, twenty-two of them were concurrently on the air. They varied in format from the basic question and answer type to the naming of popular musical tunes. Public familiarity with the general structure of the quizzes, coupled with the strikingly high stakes, precipitated extreme interest in these shows, and led to the unbelievable popularity of successful returning contestants (Anderson, 9). Virtually everyone with a television set in their home tuned in weekly to their favorite game shows in the interest of seeing the contestants, with whom they identified more and more as the weeks went by, succeed in the quiz games. The popularity of quiz games was staggering. In August of 1955 approximately 32 million television sets and 47,560,000 viewers, almost one third of the nation, tuned in to see The $64,000 Question (Anderson, 8).

It is said to be "probably one of the best things that's happened this year" according to WB Entertainment President Garth Ancier. This show is said to have "wide spread appeal", and it also helps that it follows right after "Home Improvement"(Hall 12). What a way to end a premiere week for the long-running CBS daytime game show. Not only were all six pricing games won on Friday’s show, history was made once again in the Showcase Showdown. Today’s second Showcase Showdown was a truly insane and incredible moment you had to see to believe. After Wilbert Powell, Charlotte Sosebee, and Zacharia Whitaker all spun $1.00 on their first spin, Powell and Whitaker managed to tie again with their lucky $1.00 spins on their bonus turns.
