The Views Against Sarah Palin
As I vigilantly watched the ad called “Brutal: Sarah Palin’s Record on Aerial Wolf Hunting”, I seen so much alienation against her. By the end of the video, my attention was so far off of the idea of Sarah Palin being elected vice president, but only on the thought of why a person would support this kind of cruelty. The ad did accomplished one thing, which was to convince the audience that Sarah Palin is a bad person, and why citizens should not vote for her. While seeing so much hatred against one person, this paper will focus on analyzing how pathos, ethos, and logos were used in a tactical move to oppose Sarah Palin becoming vice president.

Upon first receiving this assignment I was honestly not sure what I would do it on. Then I remember a very well done commercial from 2006. If you’re not sure what commercial I am referencing it is the ASPCA commercial with all the injured animals and "arms of an angel" playing in the background; furthermore, Sarah McLachlan voices over and stars in the commercial. The commercial does a good job of appealing to animal lovers sense of emotion (Pathos) through the photos and videos of helpless and beaten animals. Sarah McLachlan also appeals to animal lovers through the fact that she has been a longtime supporter of the ASPCA (Ethos). Also, the video includes statistics that can easily be proven these statistics help to support the commercials cause (logos). This advertisement features Pathos, because the little boy in the advertisement will probably make people feel guilty, because they spend a lot of money on unnecessary things and waste it, but this child says “Don’t I deserve a happy life?”, and this will probably make people from our society want to spend money to support this cause. This advertisement also features patriotism, because it suggests that purchasing this product will show the love, and support you have towards your country. This company makes people from America want to support this cause. It says in the advertisement,” Help stop child poverty in America”. This advertisement also features Transfer andWeasel Words because it uses positive words, and positive images to suggest that the product being sold is also positive.
These commercials make the audience feel fear, love, guilt, or joy about the situation being shown. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals or ASPCA for short shows commercials to get donations that will help prevent animal cruelty and rescue animals all across the country. I have not seen this commercial on any of the apps on my phone however this is a commercial that I see often on regular television. The target audience of these commercials is animal lovers; it could be a child or an adult. The use of Pathos in the promotion of joining the ASPCA or giving a one-time donation uses animals that look sad, hurt, homeless, abused or scared needing help. It is very effective as it makes the intended audience either want to donate to help the animals or to rescue one through adoption to give it a better life. The type of music played goes along with the feeling of sadness and helplessness that the animals are feeling and makes the audiences feel sad as well. These commercials also either use the voice of a celebrity or show the celebrity holding a dog or cat while giving information about how to help the animals. The audience is shown abused, beaten, or neglected animals and asked for donations to help give medical care, food, shelter, and love to them. By playing sad music in the background while images of scared and injured animals pass the screen, the creators of this advertisement are successful in compelling many viewers to open up their wallets and donate to the cause. Through the use of common rhetorical devices as well as less obvious strategies, this advertisement targets the viewer’s mind and succeeds in its goal of presenting the topic as a problem that needs to be solved. Have you ever wondered how influential people write great speeches that grab people's attention? They use a literary device called, rhetorical appeals. As supported in Hillary Clinton’s November 03, 2016 speech, uniting the American Public, will lead to an advantageous country. In her speech for the Democratic National Convention it states that, as elected for president, she will get everyone saying “We” instead of “I”. To reach out to the American Citizens and grab their attention, Clinton uses many rhetorical devices as she speaks. Using Logos, Pathos, and Ethos, the people of America jump on board with Clinton's ideas.
Violence is everywhere in the United States of America. Many people in America and around the world have been a victim or know someone who has been a victim of violence. Over 22 million women in the United States have been raped in their lifetime according to the website, Victims of Crime. This number is significant. Advertisements could play a role in making violence more acceptable in our society. PETA, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, is known for having shocking advertisements. This pro-vegan and pro-vegetarian nonprofit organization has always been a topic of interest. Many of PETA’s ad campaigns are related to sexuality, violence, discrimination against how people look, and dominance over women. There are many pro-vegetarian and pro-vegan ads that do not degrade women and still are persuasive. Jean Kilbourne writes about violence and the degradation of women in advertisements. Kilbourne explains her point of view in her piece, ‘“Two Ways a Woman Can Get Hurt’: Advertising and Violence.” Considering Kilbourne’s argument, PETA ads are a concern because of the suggested violence while other pro-vegan and vegetarian ads are not.
Though Kennedy and Clinton addressed their audiences nearly thirty-two years apart, each rhetor faced a common rhetorical barrier – an American populace too heavily focused on the personalities within each respective presidential election rather than the true issues confronting the United States. To overcome that barrier, both Kennedy and Clinton utilize definitional strategies – in the form of association – as well as language strategies –specifically, historical allusions. Whether or not the speeches directly correlate with both candidates winning their presidential elections does not concern the examination; this paper observes how exactly the rhetorical devices used served to dissolve the barriers between the rhetor and the intended audience.
Authors have many strategies when it comes to winning over their readers and on some occasions may even target their opponents, to make them look bad, in an attempt to make themselves look better. In the articles by Steve Greenberg and Michael Weinreb we will look at the way authors constrict articles to get readers to side with opinion by appealing to a person through logos, pathos, ethos, and the use of rhetorical devices. In this paper I am going to discuss the rhetorical appeals, as well as the argumentative structure, audience and purpose set forth by George W. Bush in his September 27 speech in Flagstaff, Arizona. More specifically I will refer to the rhetorical appeals of ethos, pathos and logos, and explain how they are used to gain the support and attention of the audience and further the further the purpose of the speech. As I explain these appeals I will also give an insight into the argumentative structure and why it is apparent in this particular speech.
The goal of Hillary’s speech is to persuade her audience that her ideas are valid, by using ethos, pathos, and logos. Hillary is the First Lady and Senator, she shows credibility as an influential activist for woman rights. “Over the past 25 years, I have worked persistently on issues relating to women, children, and families. Over the past two and a half years, I’ve had the opportunity to learn more about the challenges facing women in my country and around the world” (Clinton 2).

Although chaotic at times, it is extremely important and crucial to our future. With that being said, it is important to note that various cartoon artists take pride in replicating important issue through their art. Artist appeal to their audience by using logical fallacies, ethos, and by emphasizing or pointing out important messages within their artwork. Doug MacGregor, a political cartoon artist, had the honor to form a part of the 2016 elections by displaying his ideas in a political cartoon. The cartoon titled “It Takes Brains to be President” by MacGregor alludes to social media and political knowledge using symbolism.

The reason we weren’t as aware of animal cruelty was because this entire social media was not as common as it is now, this new technology, the whole phone apps, you can find out someone’s life in just a click of a button even if they are on the other side of the world. It is way too advanced, in a way it benefits us though let me tell you why. Because of social media we get to see citizen reporting’s of cases happening in their community, for example; they see something wrong with a dog tied up in a tree with a 10lb. chain, no shade nor water what are they going to do? Take out their phone and snap a picture for evidence, once they take it, too Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc. they begin to write a whole article of what they saw and believe and the friends start commenting, liking, and sharing so that the friends of their friends can see as well. TV shows are another resource that can show you how to look for signs of animal abuse on animals which in my opinion is great idea because no animal deserves to suffer. Overall, the visual references have brought the issue to light, supporting my argument that this advertisement shows a real representation of female abuse victims. It represents the harsh reality in our society that women are controlled by either their abusers, or society in a domestic abuse situation, not having the ability, adequate support or confidence to seek help. This advertisement also attempts to educate our society, endorse social change, making us aware of not only the physical signs of an abusive relationship, but also the psychological and emotional signs. Silencing of women is an ongoing issue in today’s world, and I feel that with an increase of social awareness, we can be more mindful of the signs and act accordingly, which could potentially prevent injury and save lives.
