The Verdesian is a 27 story, 300,000 square foot residential tower with 254 rental units located in Battery Park City. Construction for The Verdesian started in the year 2005 and opened in 2006. The general contractor for this project was Turner Construction Company. Construction was completed within a year due to the uses of flat-plate concrete floor, which offered a speed at two days per floor.5 The client for The Verdesian is Albanese Organization, Inc. Back in 2002, this company established their high reputation in the building industry of New York City and the world by being the first to have introduced the first green residential high-rise building in the United States; named The Solaire. of architects Cesar Pelli & Associates and SLCE Architects, is what brought the building towards true perfection of being a green building under LEED. The Verdesian based on the LEED chart scored: 13 of 14 on sustainable sites, 5 of 5 on water efficiency, 8 of 17 on energy and atmosphere, 6 of 13 on material and resources, 15 of 15 on indoor environmental quality and 5 of 5 on innovation; a total of 52/69 points and secured the platinum certification.6 The Verdesian, located in Battery Park City redefined this neighborhood of New York City and represented itself as the role model for other neighborhood’s buildings. Battery Park City is mainly a residential planned community, with more than one third of parkland.
It is considered as the “greenest” community in Manhattan and is the largest green neighborhood in the world7. The Verdesian design has been improved by engineers in comparison to The Solaire, which is the world’s first green residential building. Among the many improvements The Verdesian stands out as more of a modern building. It has floor to ceiling windows, which allows the building to have 33% more natural light.8 These windows are also energy efficient and thermally insulated. The glass for the windows are Low-E coated glass and along with the thermal insulated walls, which also uses a layer that is impervious to water vapor called vapor retarders allow the building to remain cool during the summer and warm in the winter. The Verdesian uses only energy star appliances, as well as custom solar shades and digital programmable thermostats.8 This Low-E coating works in respect to the climate. Thus, in hot climates only the visible lights are transmitted into the building and during the cold climates the near infrared are also transmitted allowing the atmosphere to be naturally warm (Class notes). This use of Low-E coated glass is very beneficial in reducing the amount of energy need for heating and cooling the building. Therefore, it is an environmental friendly strategy in using less energy. This allows the burning of less fossil fuels and decreases the amount of greenhouse gasses in the
atmosphere.
Many people do not know the true story of Francisco “Pancho” Villa. Pancho Villa was actually born Doroteo Arango Arambula on June 5, 1878 in San Juan del Rio, Mexico. Doroteo’s parents were uneducated, peasant sharecrop farmers. This fact is important because Doroteo had a high level of intelligence even though he did not have any formal education. After his father’s death, Doroteo took his father’s place as a sharecropper and helped support his mother and four sisters.
Increase cost of Eco-Friendly new building in Art District will be 150 million (“What we are about”, 2014).
LEED, or Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design, is a certification program for green buildings with stringent requirements for building energy efficient and environmentally responsible structures. Some requirements of this program include specific building materials, smart grid capable, gray water reclamation systems, green space minimums, high levels of insulation and low thermal transfer glass (US Green Building Council). Green buildings are a must if we are to sustain our current level of growth. Despite the higher initial cost of these buildings, the long term energy savings make these buildings a smarter choice for
Telemachus is unsure about his role as prince. He has always been told he is Odysseus son, but it isn’t etched in stone. His mother could be deceiving him all along. Telemachus is still a young boy and is trying to grow into an adult. He has the potential to become a worthy king. This would be a very difficult task with no one that supports or loves you. Even the finest leaders need help and acceptance from others.
Tribes have been present since the beginning of time. They are often smart, innovative and self-sufficient, all without the use of modern technology. A prime example of this is the Yanomami tribe. They are one of the last completely isolated and non-urbanized tribes in the world. The Yanomami have managed to stay secluded from society for over a hundred years and now this is starting to change. Cities along the Brazilian- Venezuelan border are expanding and occupying Yanomami land. Along with the expansion of Brazil and Venezuela, gold miners are invading the tribes land and destroying their environment and their health. The tribe has no real way of protecting themselves; they do not use or have modern day weapons and the government is taking no action to help. The seclusion that the tribe has managed to maintain contributes to their interesting way of life, but outside sources are threatening their culture. Another reason why the Yanomami are under attack is because they live on valuable land that miners are taking great interest in. Although they are under attack may people do not feel empathetic towards their situation, this is because they have a bad reputation surrounding them. Due to mass industrialization, the Yanomami tribe of the Southern Amazon may lose out on their rich existence and culture.
Energy efficient windows have multiple layers of glass. The reason for this is because the more layers of glass you have the better it insulates the house. Three or four layers of glass are one of the best because you have more airspace in between layers.
First off, I would have to say that this is a major mistake on Bruno’s part. He is employed by a company that specifically tailors to helping other businesses find the right spot for building new companies, eateries, and other similar projects (Timm, 2014).
In conclusion, the designers and builders of the tower have an undesirable job: creating a building that is functional, modern, sustainable and unique. At the same time it is honoring the memory of the people that died in and around the buildings that stood there before. While the green sustainable features have been criticized for being too expensive, they will do more than save just water, electricity and emissions. They and the grace of the building will inspire a generation of green and safe skyscrapers for the twenty-first century. This building has become one of the safest, environmentally friendly and expensive ever built, but as critics slate the building for various reasons, one cannot take away the determination through political, social and economic status that designers and workers have created such a beautiful building with great meaning.
“It was the tallest, most remarkable building on earth-and it stayed that way for close to forty years. The mooring mast planned to reach nearly 1,300 feet above Fifth Avenue. Below that was the building-as wide as a city block on the first floor, but narrowers as it went up. The places where is got narrower are called “Setbacks,” and they started at the sixth floor, a design that architects said, “will save space and assure light and air to neighbors.” “We believe we have solved the problem of light and air in congested districts,” said
Despite the fact that novel technologies are continuously under development to complement existing practices in coming up with greener buildings, the universal intent is that such structures are designed to diminish the general effect on the built environment on health of the humans in addition to the natural environment via: Diminishing environmental degradation, pollution and waste, improving productivity of the employee and guarding occupant health, efficient usage of water, energy, in addition to other resources.
Green architecture is a method of design that reduces the negative impact that buildings have on the environment. “It’s a harmless approach to building that minimizes harm on human health and the environment” (Jackie Craven, What is Green Architecture” and “Green Design, About.com Guide, 2009http://architecture.about.com/od/green concepts/g/green.htm) It helps people to live in a safer and healthier environment as well as contribute to the well being of the planet. A building is considered green when it has a positive approach on all area of its focus, which includes sustainability, materials efficiency, energy efficiency, water efficiency, land use and waste reduction. All of these criteria are based on the Canadian LEED rating system, which is applicable to new building, and ba...
Light Harvesting is another feature that works when the sun shines through the window, and a light bulb is on. The light will dim from the natural sunlight that it senses coming into the home significantly helping to save on energy. Newer buildings are being required to follow green guidelines to help Los Angeles to cut back on wasting resources and energy such as water, electricity, gas, and oil. Recycling is a great way for anyone to help the environment and Los Angeles also participates in this great way to
They are also seeking to expand by offering condominiums and apartments, in addition to renovations and remodeling services. They were the winner of the 2013 Good Design Award.
The beginnings of today's green revolution can be traced back to the environmental awareness of the 1960s and European design. New construction techniques have lead to the development of innovative materials and design concepts. Green buildings are designed, constructed and commissioned to ensure they are healthy for their occupants. Successfully designed green projects can involve an extensive array of factors, ranging from the resourceful use of materials, to careful consideration of function, climate, and location.
