In the passage, “When The Empire State Building Was New,” is about the construction of a famous American skyscraper. “It was the tallest most remarkable place on earth.”
The Empire State building is one of the most tallest buildings in the world. “It stands hundreds of feet taller than the skyscraper that surround it, and is visible from far away, and is visible far away in New Jersey.” But it isn’t the tallest building in the world. “It was the tallest, most remarkable building on earth-and it stayed that way for close to forty years. The mooring mast planned to reach nearly 1,300 feet above Fifth Avenue. Below that was the building-as wide as a city block on the first floor, but narrowers as it went up. The places where is got narrower are called “Setbacks,” and they started at the sixth floor, a design that architects said, “will save space and assure light and air to neighbors.” “We believe we have solved the problem of light and air in congested districts,” said

“The building of the skyscraper represents an investment of $50,000,000 and all other figures are in proportion. More than 50,000 tons of steel, 10,000,000 bricks, and 200,000 cubic feet of stone will be used before the frame is complete. There will be seventy-miles of water mains and 2,000,000 feet of electric light and power wiring. More than 3,000 men are daily at work. Among them are 225 carpenters, 290 bricklayers, 384 brick laborers, 328 arch laborers, and 107 derrick men. On each floor, those men walked to work past long unemployment lines, which reminded them how lucky the were to have such well-playing jobs. Building the Empire State building was a dangerous job, performed without hardhats, harnesses, or any of the safety equipment required today. On each floor, Poore tells us, there was “a miniature railway system,” to haul the steel, wood and marble brought up from the street

At the time, New York City was the factory headquarters for America, but the Big Apple did well to hide their industrial side. The city did its best to keep up the facade that everything was glitz and glam. These factories, each with hundreds of workers inside, were loft buildings that were never designed to house factories. They were made in an attempt to save money on electricity and insurance, which worked because the lofts were “fireproof”. The structure of the building also allowed for more to packed into a smaller place due to taller ceilings. Another crucial design flaw in the loft factories were the exits. There was only one narrow hallway for the workers to exit. This was to ensure the workers (women especially) were not stealing
Washington Square Park is home to thousands of New York University Students, families leisurely strolling through the park on afternoons, people cooling off at the fountain during the summer, couples lounging on the green grass, and even home to the New York City Pillow Fight held during the summer. At the center of Greenwich Village, it provides an escape from the busy traffic and city surrounding it. Most importantly, it is home to the Washington Square Arch.
Gustave Eiffel has found his métier. He loved designing and erecting practical structures that conquered nature, he excelled at both the mathematics and the logistics of building, and he enjoyed working out in the weather with his men. His technical schooling a...
On June 9, 2003, my life took an interesting turn. It was a sunny day. Blue skies, humidity insanely high, and I found myself at 4th Street and Constitution in Washington, D.C. I stood before an angled architectural masterpiece by famed architect I.M. Pei; its pointed corners jutted out towards the grassy Mall and Capitol Hill as if it were some sort of Picasso-esque compass pointing simultaneously towards all the tourist hot spots. (The one corner, purportedly the sharpest building corner in the world, wore a dark gray spot about eye level where thousands if not millions of tourists had touched it just to see how sharp it really was). I found myself standing before it, not as tourist . . . but as an employee on my first day of work.
Every culture left a mark of its quality on New York’s buildings that change over time: some are old, some are new, some are tall, and some are small. They might have a lot in common, but not one building is like the other. Diversity is what makes New York.
Lady Liberty physically looks like a tiny figure when viewed from the Brooklyn bridge. But up close it is one of the most impressive structures...
When the design for the World Trade Center was first envisioned, the magnificence of its structure was expected to surpass the greatest feats of Civil engineering in the world. When the Center was completed in 1973 it gained the distinction of being the world’s tallest tower. It gained the type of attention that was given to the Eiffel tower and the Empire State Building as it was too going to break records and inspire greatness by its simple but massive stature. It was to also have social, ideological, political, and economic impact on the US and the world as well as that of its engineering aspects. To America it would represent proudly the might of its capitalist society. It would also be a home of thousands of political and financial employees of the US as well as the nations that participate in trade with the US. The NY and NJ port authorities began contemplating building a World Trade Center in 1961; the same year JFK announced his intent to put a man on the moon before the end of the decade. Such lofty ideas challenged the present technological boundaries and were successful in stretching those walls ever further.
Nearly four million people visited the Statue of Liberty in 2014. (National Parks of New York Harbor Conservancy) They were able to stand right in front of the statue themselves and get to experience the feeling of hope, justice, unity, and freedom that our accessories felt when they traveled to America from their home country. There are many theories on why France gave us the Statue. “Many Americans were suspicious of the gift statue and what the motives of its French donors were.” (Perea 46) , but also what the original design of the statue was. Its was to be said that “the original model for the Statue of Liberty was a black woman, but the design was changed to appease white Americans who would not accept an African- American Liberty” (Joseph,
A cultural space can be defined in many ways. Everyone defines a cultural space differently. For some it could be a local park and for others it can be the internet. Even if people have never seen it in person, the power it holds brings so much influence. The Statue of Liberty in New York City is not only just an attraction for tourists but a significant space in the United States. The Statue of Liberty is the most socially and culturally valuable types of cultural space. Culture and history is embedded in this landmark, giving it a lot of meaning. Over time the Statue of Liberty changed its meaning. It provides educational value to those who visit, a variety of activities, and it has been influential not just in the United States, but to the
I had a chance to visit this building and as I stood under the edge of the building looking upward I was amazed by the beauty and precision, and stunned by the size and splendor. Inside I could not get past the entrance and a guard told me I wasn’t allowed to take pictures. The interior with its light colored marble walls and double height ceiling is breathtaking, I stood there and I felt a tremble run through my body. I can honestly say this is one of my favorite buildings in New York.
One World Trade Center (WTC) is the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere measuring up at 1776 feet tall. The built output sets new standards of design, construction, and prestige. Its beauty in New York City’s magical skyline makes it an icon. It is the most recognised and desirable office address in the world. In this essay I plan to argue that the social, political and economic status of society has affected the built output of this building considerably, for the good. Making the building one of the best skyscrapers in the world.
This building is capable of such thing by including shops, museums, offices, restaurants and apartments within (Jodidio, 2012, p. 91). The purpose of the design is to be “a sharp and light presence in the London Skyline” (Piano, 2000). The London Bridge Tower opened in 2012 and is currently the tallest building in Europe, although for Renzo, the height of The Shard was never something he strived for (Jodidio, 2012, p. 91) (The Shard,

The tower took so long to build due to a series of wars. The tower consists of eight stories, two hundred and seven columns, two hundred and ninety-seven steps that spiral the inside, two hundred and eleven arches and seven bells. The tower was designed to be like any other tower, perfectly vertical. Construction of the building was completed in stages. The first stage consisted of the building of the first three floors.
