From the results collected from survey questionnaires, both teachers and students regarded error correction as an effective technique to improve students’ writing skill as well as limit their grammatical errors. Most of them appreciate the important role of error correction in learning writing. When the respondents were required to choose the most useful way to improve students’ writing proficiency, both of them chose teacher correction and peer correction as the most efficient methods. Students recognized the value of teacher correction, which its percentage made up the highest rate as opposed to the remaining error correction techniques, namely self-correction, peer correction and remedial work. Teachers having wide knowledge and experience as well as deep understanding of grammatical errors can use standardized methods to indicate students’ errors in writing correctly and clearly. Should they underline errors made by English learners, followed by giving more explanations and suggesting how to correct errors, students could know what kind of error they have made exactly to avoid them in the next writing. Besides noting down errors corrected directly, teachers can use error codes to describe the types of errors and give some recommendations to instruct how errors can be corrected. For example, VT is an abbreviation for verb tense or RO is the symbol of run-on sentence and so on. Noteworthy, it is necessary for students to have a certain understanding of the error codes so that they will know what teachers indicate. After that, they could realize what grammatical structures they should revise. In addition, after correcting errors, teachers should write down some compliments or advice to students, which is a considerable activity to create interaction between teachers and students. It can be revealed that teachers’ positive feedbacks like “Good” or specific recommendation such as “Linking words”, “Should write concluding sentence clearly” are truly beneficial to raise students’ motivation for avoidance of errors in their next written work and writing …show more content…
It is carried out in three main forms, namely pair work, group work and whole class correction. This kind of method is an effective technique for error correction, which benefits both teachers and students. Firstly, most students appreciate the effectiveness of peer correction. During the process of error correction, students are interested in getting involved in working with their classmates. This is because no score is involved and they can freely share their own ideas. Cooperating with their fellows not only helps students increase their critical thinking, but also broaden their knowledge. In more details, a cooperative environment brings them a great opportunity to deliberate about their own errors and what the best error correction is. Moreover, not only do they learn from their own errors to avoid in the next writing, but they can also study a lot from their classmates’ errors. After that, the writers can indicate their strength and weakness to ameliorate their written work. Secondly, in terms of advantages for teachers, they can save a great deal of time in correcting errors for conveying other essential knowledge. As technology evolved and texting came more profound grammar was becoming a lost art. In Dana Goldstein’s article ,‘Why Kids Can’t Write’, she talks about what teachers are doing about grammar. The teachers are not doing much about the grammar issue in schools.
As a second language learner I have never expected myself to be a perfect writer throughout the semester. Even If English was my first language still, I would not be a perfect writer. It is not about first or second language, it is about how well I understand the learning objectives. Then organizing and writing with my own ideas and putting them in my paper. I am going to be honest, I am not good at English subject and English subject is my strongest weakness than the other subjects. In this paper I will discuss and analyze my own writing, reflecting on the ways that my writing has improved throughout the semester.
Qualitative and quantitative instruments were used in obtaining data for this instructional problem. The first instrument used was quantitative, the instructor gave students a writing assignment, and when it was graded, it was clear that there was a problem with effective topic and thesis statements, as well as general organization of the paper. To be sure that this wasn’t an isolated problem, the second instrument was developed; a quantitative instrument that surveyed the teachers, asking for information on their students comprehensive writing skills.
Punctuation errors in writing have hunted me ever since I can remember. They are my worst enemies when it comes to writing sentences in an essay. From my view punctuation errors are not only easy to make, but they are very hard to find in my essay’s after my sentences have been wrote. I can perform the punctuation errors and not even know I even made it. It drives me crazy, because I be having so many punctuation errors in my sentences when my English professor grades my essay’s.
I have learned many things throughout the course of the term, including such things as: how to write an essay and how to improve on essays that I have already written, how to locate and composite better research through the use of numerous resources found at the campus library, the internet, and the “Common Sense” textbook, how to cite research, examples, and quotations properly within the contents of my research paper as well as document it accurately according to MLA standards. Through the exploration of the “Subjects and Strategies” textbook, I have learned nine different methods used when writing an effective essay and how the different writing styles affect the overall theme and tone of the essay when used properly. This past semester, I have encountered many difficulties when trying to write these essays, but through the use of the textbooks, the aide of the instructor, and once I was able to classify the different types of essays and styles, I found them possible to overcome.

One of the most prominent forms of writing in children’s lives is essay writing and writing for school. These skills become important later on in life when these children grow up to become adults and the reports that are written are for something far more important than a mark. Past generations were limited to where they can go to have a piece of literature edited. The furthest their resources could expand would have been teachers, or anyone who was willing to edit. Today’s generation has the technology that allows them to seek help from someone who may have problems in their own writing. Computers are the first major improvement to editing. They catch initial and obvious mistakes that would otherwise go unnoticed because a person is so used to their own writing. There are many websites that help students learn how to cite the information. An example of this is Owl Perdue; it teaches people how to cite information for essays, reports. It teaches someone how to cite information from online sources, books, journals, etc. There are also many websites where students who want to learn what grammatical mistakes they make can point out what some of their downfalls are. Yet it is hard to know the difference between a dangling participle and a sentence fragment. How are we supposed to be able to grade their work or tell them how to write better beyond spelling errors?
A College has a large number of learning skills that can be used for success of each student. As an A student, I am familiar with using A’s educational resources. A few of the resources are extremely handy and adaptable in the application that a student needs. One of the resource tools that I have found most beneficial in my learning process is the A Center for Writing Excellence (CWE). The Center for Writing Excellence offers a plagiarism and grammar checker. Here, I can submit my writing materials to have them checked for plagiarism and grammar errors. I also used the grammar guide frequently. I believe that one of my biggest faults in writing is grammatical errors. The Center for Writing Excellence also offers example papers, essay development, tutorials guides and writing manuals. There are also other resources such as, Axcess Course Materials, Course Syllabus, Student Workshops, and Visual and Audio Tutorials. These tools can be found at ecampus for A College.
A large part of an English teacher’s job deals with helping students find their own voices amidst the many teachings of their parents and peers. A student’s voice can be their values, their interests, and their perspectives of the world in which they live. Their voice can be their critical questioning of the many situations they face, whether in a text, the school cafeteria, or a park after school. It is the job of an English teacher to aid in finding this voice through their writing. It is by putting words and thoughts down on paper that a student can sometimes feel comfortable enough to take risks and find their true voices. Although traditional grammar instruction has long been thought to improve this skill, this is no longer the case. Instead, by providing a classroom environment in which students are immersed in classic literature from many genres including poetry, short stories, and novels, students will learn how to harness grammar for their own purposes of finding their voice in their writing.
