The Threat of the Mulatto in The Birth of a Nation In D. W. Griffith’s The Birth of a Nation the interactions between black and white characters represent Griffith’s view of an appropriate racial construct in America. His ideological construction is white dominance and black subordination. Characters, such as the southern Cameron’s and their house maid, who interact within these boundaries, are portrayed as decent people. Whereas characters who cross the line of racial oppression; such as Austin Stoneman, Gus and Silas Lynch, are portrayed as bad. Both Lynch and Lydia Brown, the mulatto characters, are cast in a very negative light because they confuse the ideological construct the most. The mixing of races puts blacks and whites on a common ground, which, in Griffith’s view, is a big step in the wrong direction. Griffith portrays how the relationship between blacks and whites can be good only if the color line and positions of dominance and subordination are maintained. Through the mulatto characters he illustrates the danger that blurring the color line poses to American society. Griffith’s black characters that know their place in the social hierarchy are portrayed as very nice people. An opening scene of the movie depicts the proper way for blacks to act when the Cameron’s escort their northern guests, the Stoneman’s, through their (((Institution))). The black slaves are dancing gaily and bow and tip their hats to the white visitors, even as they ignore their black entertainers. Griffith would deem this social interaction appropriate. Aside from the blacks being portrayed as slaves who will do anything to see that their white masters enjoy their time, the whites assert their 2 dominance by not acknowledging the blacks. In his essay, “Race Prejudice as a Sense of Group Position,” Herbert Blumer asserts “race prejudice is a protective device. It functions, however short-sightedly, to preserve the integrity and the position of the dominant group” (172). For the whites to protect their social status they must place the blacks into a subordinate position and revolve their interactions with them around that group disposition. The disposition, or prejudice includes “a fear or apprehension that the subordinate racial group is threatening, or will threaten, the position of the dominant group” (Blumer 171). Griffith harbors Blumer’s ideas on the dominant groups fear with his mulatto characters. Mulattos do threaten the position of white dominance. They cannot be totally defined as either black or white, and this moves them further from subordination and closer to white privilege.

Although racist and prejudice attitudes have weakened over the decades, they persist in modern societies. To examine a modern perspective of prejudice and racism, Wayson Choy’s “I’m a Banana and Proud of it” and Drew Hayden Taylor’s “Pretty Like a White Boy: The Adventures of a Blue-Eye Ojibway” both address the issues of prejudice and racism; however, the authors extend each others thoughts about the issues because of their different definitions, perspectives, experiences and realities.
Blumer (1958) states that there are four basic types of feelings that is occurring together when racial prejudice is happening. These cannot just happen separately, there needs to be all four to exhibit the racial prejudice. First, there is ones sense of superiority, this is explained as members of the dominant group feeling as if they are simply better that members of other racial groups. McIntosh explains the keys aspects of unearned advantage (a privilege that one group hold over another) as well as conferred dominance (the act of voluntarily giving another group power) and the relationship that these factors hold when determine power of a social group. Additionally, the purpose of McIntosh’s article was to demonstrate the privilege that certain individuals carry and how that translates to the social structures of our society. Discrimination has always been there between blacks and whites. Since the 1800s where racial issues and differences started flourishing till today, we can still find people of different colors treated unequally. “[R]acial differences are more in the mind than in the genes. Thus we conclude superiority and inferiority associated with racial differences are often socially constructed to satisfy the socio-political agenda of the dominant group”(Heewon Chang,Timothy Dodd;2001;1).

The movie “Birth of a Nation” is settling a lot of controversy before coming out in theaters, because of the film director, writer, and star of the movie his name is Nate Parker because of his past, when he was a student at Penn State University where he rape a fellow female student and was accused of rape in 1999 and two years later he was free of charge. Nate Parker is not the only one on the controversy along with his longtime friend and roommate at the time of the incident is Jean McGianni Celestin and was also involved in the rape. Mr. Celestin was charged with sexual assault, but his case was appealed.

Throughout our country’s history, race has been an ongoing issue. This problem was especially serious during the 1930’s. Evidence for this could be found in John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men. In the book, the character Crooks is very mistreated at the ranch due to his race. Crooks is very lonely and bitter due to his exclusion of having to sleep in the barn by himself, the social structure of the ranch, and the ranchers outright mistreating him.
According to the authors, Shaw et al., discrimination plays a huge role in shaping group identities and their beliefs, where the perception of discrimination among each racial/ethic group is associated with their position in the group-position social order. In table 8.2, where racial/ethnic discrimination was compared among Whites, Blacks, Hispanics and Asians, it was no surprise that Blacks believed that they suffer high levels of discrimination, followed by Hispanics and Asian who feel that they too endure high levels of discrimination. Whites, on the other hand, where found to have experienced the least amount of racial discrimination where they, “see themselves at the top rung of a group-position social order,” (Shaw et al., 2015, p. 246).
