Throughout A Burnt Out Case, the theme of love is continually delved into and dissected. Many characters allow their love for things like religion, women, or vocation to lead them astray from what others would consider the “morally right” path. Religion was also a common motif, it’s pros and cons being portrayed through the words and actions of characters like Father Thomas, Doctor Colin, Querry, and Rycker. These two concepts went hand-in-hand to deliver the powerful overall theme; Love is dangerous. The theme makes itself known particularly well in the life of Rycker. Although there is no apparent reason for scorching her hands, Hansen suggests Mariette found an excuse to put her hands into the water. He does so through his sequence of events, nothing how Mariette was silent with Hermance and peering down at the bowl of steam. Hansen makes this moment seem irrational of Mariette, but readers know everything Mariette does is thought-out. Her response to Hermance, “just wanted to hurt,” has a larger undertone. Hansen could be emphasizing Mariette’s ambition to have such pain to draw attention to herself, or she could be making reparations for her past sins and this would be her moral obligation to “just” want to hurt for her mistakes. Her remark fuels the undermining and crazy feeling readers can associate with her character. It also creates the sense that Mariette’s personality is lost through her yearning to be and feel for something else. Marie had just traveled from her hometown of Ville Rose, where discarding your child made you wicked, to the city of Port-Au-Prince, where children are commonly left on the street. Morrison tackles the amorphous and resilient human emotion of love not to glorify the joyous feelings it can effect but to warn readers of love's volatile nature. Marie never hated Lulu, despite the fact that she had an affair with her husband, which resulted in a child who was named Lyman Lamartine. When they first see each other on the night of the Capulet party, they quickly fall in love and are soon married by Romeo’s friend and mentor, Friar Lawrence. Their love, being full of passion in its quick course, faces many trials such as Romeo’s banishment from their hometown of Verona, as well as Juliet being forced to marry Paris, kinsman of the Prince.
