In today’s society, a dysfunctional family is a concept that is taken lightly, because our society has been desensitized to it, and we have become so numbed by the idea. There are children who suffer greatly because of the families (or parents) who raised them. A dysfunctional family is defined as a family that encounters “problems that tend to be chronic and children [who] do not consistently get their needs met” (Benton). This includes negative, abusive, addicted, and neglectful parents. Individuals who are raised in a dysfunctional family can be impacted psychologically in many ways, such as participating in crimes, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse. Their perspective and values, their decisions and behaviors, their character and their enthusiasm. This also applies to children. As children grow up in a harsh environment, they adapt and observe their parents’ actions, and most feel obligated to do the same. Others, just watch or experience it and allow it to affect them. “Neglect, physical abuse, and sexual abuse have profound immediate and long-term effects on a child’s development” (Becker-Weidman). As a result of the abuse, “children are likely to experience anxiety issue (2 times the average), major depressive issues (3.4 times the average), alcohol abuse (2.5 times the average), drug abuse (3.8 times the average), and antisocial behavior (4.3 times the average)” (Becker-Weidman). Statistics show that because of the neglect “80% of maltreated infants exhibited attachment issue symptoms” (Becker-Weidman). In Gone Baby Gone, Helene has not raised her daughter, Amanda, and has not cared for her like most mothers do. During the time of Amanda’s kidnapping, Helene was at the bar with her friends instead of taking care of her Amanda while claiming she was visiting her friend next door. Angie and Patrick found out that she lied about her location, since “Helene knew it looked bad enough that she left her kid in the first place. If the press or the cops knew she was actually ten blocks away at a bar and not next door, it would look even worse” …show more content…
Each family is a different case; however, one thing is for sure, we are humans. We are all fallible. Most think that a dysfunctional family is any family that has trouble co-existing in the same house. While that is correct, we don’t fathom the concept that even single mothers/fathers, controlling parents, and deficient parents are also categorized as dysfunctional families. According to Ten Serious Effects of Negative Parenting - and the Science Behind Them, Doctor Klebanov makes it clear that research has proven “when a parent's behavior does not create a loving, supportive environment, a child’s brain develops in altered form” (Klebanov). This eventually leads to a child growing up with physiological
Family systems have been studied since psychologists began studying people and their behaviors. The family is a dynamic system—a self-organizing system that adapts itself to changes in its members and to changes in its environment (as cited in Sigelman & Rider, 2009). Allowing the focus of a family system to grow beyond the mother and child relationship did not happen overnight. For many years, there was no connection made between other members of the family and the developmental issues of the children involved.
Structured Family Therapy (SFT) refers the mere undesignated rules that structure how a family interacts with one another (Walsh, 2010). The family unit is composed of systems or parts, and the parts must be unified to compile a whole unit to create homeostasis (Broderick, 1993). SFT therapy is warranted when dysfunction enters the family unit, and creates a deficiency of adaption by the individual which disrupts the family structure (Boyle, 2000). The family structure is composed of major components such as: subsystems, executive authority, boundaries, rules, roles, alliances, triangles, flexibility, and communication (Walsh,
...es that have a direct correlation to the maladaptive behaviors the family members and family system is exhibiting.
The Smiths are a family of five. The parents are Mary and David and their children; Amanda, Jen, and John. The family personality has changed over time. The family as a unit is somewhat chaotic. No one in the family seems to get along with one another with the exception of Mary and her daughter, Amanda. When they initially arrived at the office, they did not seem to interact with one another and were not necessarily friendly. I would definitely consider this family to be dysfunctional. They seem to lack respect and accountability for the misdoings. Their physical appearance is normal or average, they seem like a well-off family. David, the father, has a good job that can provide for his family, especially since his wife is ill and does not work. The parents lack thw ability to parent their children as one unit, due to their dysfunctional relationship. They do not have the ability to communicate as husband and wife. David is almost estranged from his family because he takes on enormous workloads that has a significant negative impact on the family. Their lack of a connection causes some of the family members to act out, or not
Family dynamics are the relations between family members as well as the unpredictable interactions that can occur within a family. Every family has its own dynamic. There are so many things to judge when you think of family: there is the order of their birth, siblings that tend to fight, or the single child in a family. It all seems to become apparent through the years. There are four main roles a dysfunctional family. There are Hero, Scapegoat, Lost Child, and Clown/mascot. Realizing that you were a part of a dysfunctional family will certainly aid you in understanding how and why you act the way you do, as well as give you reason to appreciate and view your family differently.
The slightest dysfunction in a family structure can be detrimental to a child’s development. Children often act out and take part in delinquent activities. In order to increase a child’s chance to succeed in life, they must be raised in a stable environment involving two parents. This helps them to feel included in the family and will help build their confidence and independence later in life.
Why do family myths hold so much power over our individual lives and or family lives? In the Kennon family it holds a lot of power because people they have internalized and hold on to it for truth. One prime example of this is a myth that society has placed on African American people as a whole and one that the Kennon family has internalized and held on to. That myth is the poor black broken family, and as we all know “race is one of the most powerful determinants of a person’s life course, opportunity, and health status.” (Ocampo, 2005, p. 575) for generations the Kennon family has always just assumed, that they would be poor and uneducated, and that was all that was expected of them. When I asked my grandmother about this (Dorris Kennon please see Appendix) she said “it was just the way that we thought growing up, my mother
Ultimately, dysfunctional families create a selfish and unsuspecting society that is ruled by a government of great dominance over the people.
This family structures consists of a child who have separated parents or just one single parent with the other out of the picture. With only one parent or separated parents the child will be emotional and usually blame one of the parents for their role of how things turned out. With this structure children usually show problems with "capacity, schooling, physical health, mental and emotional health, social conduct and behaviour, peer relations, criminal offending, cigarette smoking, substance use, early departure from home, early-onset sexual behaviour and teenage pregnancy." (Mackay) This can not only affect a child's life as a teen but for the rest of their lives. This kind of structure is becoming more common nowadays and can affect a child in a negative way. This structure can provide destroys the well being for the child. This can be the cause if the child has parents who do not agree with the court ordered custody agreement and acts out or ruining their lives with drugs, early onset sexual activity, or other bad habits. They can commonly feel abandoned or that their parents aren't there for them in many aspects including physically, emotionally, or
No one chooses to be codependent, yet he is born into a family in which codependency is a normal way of life. A healthy family shows love, acceptance, safety, the need to express yourself, guidance, support, encouragement, and privacy. When given this environment, children are able to grow and develop into happy, confident, responsible adults. Unhealthy families are those that do not relate to each other positively. Codependency starts with alcohol-abusive parents who pay no attention to their children's growth.
Case Assignment: Pioneers of MFT and their Concepts The emergence of family therapy was first established in the 1950s. The early concepts were devised by family theorists, researchers, and therapists. All of whom based their studies on the study of schizophrenia in a family setting. Since the beginning, the contributions of many innovators have built what modern family therapy is today.
For my research topic I chose to write on the effects of expectation. The expectations of one’s family and one’s self can have a major influence on his/ her life. When some tries to live up to a high expectation it can cause the individual a great deal of stress. Therefore, the question the question I am researching is “Should family members- parents, grandparent, aunts or uncles- set high educational, relational, and moral expectations for their children?” In order to find information on this topic I acquired two articles from the University of South Carolina Library website. The first article is titled “High expectations for higher education perceptions of college and experiences of stress prior to and through college career.” This article

They are many causes of family to become dysfunctional. One main reason is there’s substance abuse within the family dynamic. Whether it be one or both parents are intentionally or involuntarily have a substance abuse or addiction. Usually family life can be unpredictable as well as unsuccessful with addicted parent. Usually the parent with any substance addiction that’s their main priority, this then causes the parent to neglect both physical as well as the emotional needs of their children.
There are so many different types of family relationships. Whatever form a family takes; it is an important part of everyone’s life. My family has played an important role in my life.
